I don't remember the last time VA did tryouts like some other states do. Would it be worth doing those this year like @ NAQT states or something?

Re: Virginia NASAT 2018?
I used to run tryouts at NAQT States whenever I could! The problem was that normally, only a few people would show up. I'd be glad to run them at NAQT States if high schoolers are interested!cat wrote:I don't remember the last time VA did tryouts like some other states do. Re: Virginia NASAT 2018?
I'd be interested in trying out; thank you Eric for graciously volunteering as host!
How would tryouts work (what set, will there be separate tryouts for separate subjects, etc.)? I feel like NASAT was / probably still is difficult, and favors deep knowledge as opposed to generalization, which should be accounted for during tryouts.
That raises the question - who will decide teams?

Much thanks to Eric for hosting & making this convenient for teams attending States. I would be interested in trying out and am also curious about the precise nature of the tryouts/team selection criteria.

Re: Virginia NASAT 2018?
It looks like there's a pretty healthy amount of interest for this tournament after all! If everyone's alright with UVA hosting tryouts at NAQT States this year, I'll gladly think about some equitable ways to decide the NASAT team and post back in this thread when I've come up with some potential solutions. In the past (when I captained the NASAT team), I used a modified power system in order to better reward deep buzzes; I may institute something similar here with a college-regular set.
In the meantime, I can see the number of teams/the number of players on a team becoming an issue. My personal inclination is to see how tryouts go and then to register either 1/2 teams or 4/6 people on each team accordingly, but I'm open to suggestions.

Re: Virginia NASAT 2018?
I have preexisting travel plans over Easter weekend that may or may not change before the 31st. Given that NAQT States takes place when much of Virginia is on spring break, I imagine there might be other interested players who have similar potential conflicts. Will there be another way to get consideration for the Virginia team(s), perhaps based on other tournament results or a variation on a poll method such as described here?http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 20&t=15633

I think participation at past NASATs and other national tournaments should be given heavy weight if a poll is used.

Re: Virginia NASAT 2018?
After looking through some of the other proposed solutions to the NASAT tryout problem, my inclinations are to go with the 5 subject split, where we run 5 quick tryouts on 5 different categories in a row after NAQT States and tabulate points afterwards. The 5 categories used by most other states seem to be the following:
Jacob's point about availability is something for me to keep in mind as well. Obviously availability won't be perfect at this event, so I'm thinking about allowing for independent applications to join the NASAT team in conjunction with the in-person tryout. The in-person tryout would be heavily encouraged, but this would allow me the flexibility to tailor the team to account for absences. That application will most likely go over subject area expertise, past tournament performances, availability for NASAT, as well as general team fit questions.
Does this sound like a plan? If so, I can put together that Google Form over the next few days for both tryout participants and people who won't be able to make the tryout to fill out, and will craft the set in time for NAQT States.

Sounds like a plan. Are people allowed to only tryout for certain subjects or is everyone expected to play through all five tryouts?

Powers will be adjusted accordingly from the unnamed base set to account for its higher level of difficulty, and to reward deep knowledge. Negs will remain in place.kiwikoalabear wrote:Will the tryouts use a modified power / neg system? How exactly will scoring work?

I'll allow people to sign up up until 11:59 P.M. on Friday, March 30th (aka the night before the tournament).
You can select which tryouts you want to participate in to maximize your performance. If you don't feel comfortable trying out in a subject or won't get many questions on the topic, don't bother. If you want to give it a stab, go right ahead!KelinC625 wrote:Sounds like a plan. Are people allowed to only tryout for certain subjects or is everyone expected to play through all five tryouts?

Re: Virginia NASAT 2018?
The results are in for the Virginia NASAT 2018 tryouts. The selected teams are listed below:
A-team: Fred Zhang, James Kuang, Justin Young, Kevin Wang
B-team: Jacob Augelli, Kelin Carpenter, Benjamin Xu, Sohom Patel
C-team: John Brown, Julia Zhou, Catherine Qian, William Wang, Dan Ni, Prithvi Nathan
Teams were selected using both the NASAT tryout results and players' accumulated stats for the semester. Because I will not be able to make it to NASAT this year, all the teams listed above should coordinate amongst themselves to decide whether or not to attend NASAT. A member from each of the above teams should email Fred Morlan when a decision has been reached to go to NASAT, and cite this post on their application for a specific team.
Thank you to all who tried out for NASAT this year, and good luck in Lexington!
