2019 RMBAT Available for Mirroring

Post by Abdon Ubidia »

I’m pleased to announce the Richard Montgomery Blair Academic Tournament (RMBAT), a high school housewrite for the 2018-19 season. The intended difficulty is an adjustment of +1, or in other words, slightly harder than an NAQT IS set. The questions will be approximately 6 lines in length in 10 point Times New Roman. We are intending this set to be ready for mirrors by January 1, 2019. The set will consist of 14 packets of 20 powermarked tossups and 20 bonuses plus one packet of 10 tiebreaker tossups.

The set will primarily be written by the members of the Montgomery Blair and Richard Montgomery quizbowl teams. The set will be head edited by Emmett Laurie with Anson Berns, Jakob Boeye, Olivia Chen, Adam Howlett, Alex Hu, Katherine Lei, Jack Lewis, and Vishwa Shanmugam serving as the editing team.

The distribution for RMBAT will be:
4/4 Science (1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1/1 Other [noncomputational math, computer science, earth science, astronomy, etc.])
4/4 History (1/1 American, 1/1 Continental European, 1/1 World, 1/1 Other [British, commonwealth, ancient, etc.])
4/4 Literature (1.5/1.5 Long Fiction, 1/1 Non-Epic Poetry, .75/.75 Drama, .75/.75 Short Fiction/Other [biographies, long form journalism, mixed, etc.])
3/3 Fine Arts (1/1 Painting/Sculpture, 1/1 Classical Music, 1/1 Other [architecture, jazz, film, etc.])
1/1 Religion
1/1 Myth
.5/.5 Philosophy
.5/.5 Social Science
.5/.5 Geography
.5/.5 Current Events
.5/.5 Sports/Pop Culture
.5/.5 Mixed/Other Academic

Subdistributing literature by genre instead of by region is a relatively recent innovation (credit to Auroni Gupta) and has thus far only been tried at the college level. However, the response to doing it this way has been mostly positive, and we have decided that it would also work at the high school level. We will also ensure that our literature answerlines will be diverse in geography, time period, etc.

Mirrors will be $10 per team that plays. If you are interested in mirroring RMBAT or have any questions, please email [email protected].
