Centennial Invitational Sunday October 6, 2019 NAQT 185A

Post by eseifte1 »

This is our first announcement for two tournaments: the CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL TOURNAMENT in Ellicott City, Maryland to be held on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 8:30 AM (one day after the SATs) and the BURLEIGH MANOR MIDDLE SCHOOL TOURNAMENT to be held at Burleigh Manor Middle School on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 8:30AM. Burleigh Manor is across the parking lot from Centennial High School.

For the high school tournament on Sunday October 6, we will be using NAQT IS-185A set. This question set is an INTRODUCTORY set written to accommodate new players, so this tournament will be ideal for teams new to quiz bowl or new members of established teams. These questions can also help to hone rapid buzzing skills for more experienced teams and players. This set will not overlap with any of the Virginia leagues, but it may overlap with leagues in southern Pennsylvania.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend, even the most experienced teams. Like last year, we are planning to have a STANDARD field composed of teams of ANY AGE OR GRADE less experienced to Quizbowl and a TOURNAMENT field composed of experienced teams. The STANDARD field will have its own trophies but will not be eligible for the NAQT and PACE championship tournaments. Obviously teams can elect to participate in the TOURNAMENT field regardless of players' age and experience. We are using this format in order to avoid the 660 to 10 scores in mismatched contests that are frustrating for all involved. Very experienced Middle School and Elementary teams may participate, but they will be competing against high school teams (There will be no middle school division at the Centennial Invitational. For those who want a Middle/Elementary Tournament only, please read about our November 16th tournament below).

We will apply for Gold Certification from PACE, and we are using an NAQT set.
TRANSLATION: 20% of the TOTAL teams will be eligible from the varsity side for the PACE Nationals. Based on last year (field of 66 standard and tournament levels), this will mean 13 teams (all derived from the upper "tournament" bracket). 15% of the total number of high school teams will be eligible for the NAQT Nationals (HSNCT). Based on last year (field of 66), we anticipate 10 teams (all derived from the upper "tournament" bracket.

We will have a coaches/parents' round during lunch (this year in the Library to avoid the noise of the cafeteria) with fossils/minerals as prizes, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Howard County Special Olympics.

LAST YEAR, 108 TEAMS SIGNED UP, AND WE TURNED AWAY THE LATE REQUESTERS. We cannot expand beyond 100 for the high school tournament (to be held on October 6th) and 48 for the middle school tournament (to be held on November 16). So to ensure your school can participate, please sign up early.

Like last year, we REQUIRE all teams to stay for the rounds after lunch, and we will require reregistration at lunch to verify afternoon participation.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and we will provide our traditional breakfast banquet for free. For those teams wishing to stay on site for lunch, pizza will be sold at registration.

The cost for teams participating in the tournament is $75 for every team. Teams can bring a working buzzer for a $10 discount (but only one buzzer set per team entered). No other discounts are being offered. DO NOT MAIL REGISTRATION CHECKS (bring them with you)!!!! CHECKS FOR REGISTRATION SHOULD BE MADE OUT TO "CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL" FOR EITHER TOURNAMENT. Checks for registration should NOT include pizza money. Checks for pizza should be made out to "Sara Seifter" (or use cash).

For the middle school tournament to be held November 16, we will be using NAQT MS-32. Elementary Teams are encouraged to attend, but there will be only one division-middle school, so elementary students will compete against middle school teams. This will be a qualifying tournament for the MSNCT (Middle School National Championship Tournament) to be held in Chicago in May 2020. The cost for teams participating in the tournament is $75 for every team. Teams can bring a working buzzer for a $10 DO NOT MAIL REGISTRATION CHECKS (bring them with you)!!!!

We have received Gold Certification from PACE. This means 20% of the TOTAL teams will be eligible from the varsity side for the PACE Nationals. Based on the current numbers, this would qualify 15 teams (all derived from the upper "tournament" bracket).

15% of the total number of high school teams will be eligible for the NAQT Nationals (HSNCT). Based on the current numbers, we anticipate 11 teams (all derived from the upper "tournament" bracket).

With 13 days to go, we have 72 teams entered so far.
