Land of Lakes (LOL) Classic, Lakeland High School, Scott Twp, PA on 12/14/19

Post by jillzie »

The Land of Lakes (LOL) Classic will take place at Lakeland Jr. Sr. High School in Scott Twp, PA on Saturday, December 14th, 2019. We are located in NEPA, approximately 8 minutes off I-81or 8 minutes off Business Route 6. (Address is 1355 Lakeland Dr., Scott Twp., PA 18433)

Set: IS-186. While we are looking to attract new teams from NEPA, all teams are welcome! We have a soft cap of 18, although that may be expanded to a hard cap of 24 if staffing and buzzer availability permits.

Tournament Format: Standard rules will be in effect (powers, negs, etc., with sudden death overtime) with ACF timing (five seconds for everything). Computational Math questions won't be used for toss-ups, but we will be using Comp Math bonuses. Formatting will be standard: round robin in the morning, with rebracketing and a round robin in the afternoon. A final/advantaged final will be played as necessary, with trophies for top teams and prizes for top scorers.

Fees:
Base Fee: $85 for the first team, $75 for each additional team.

Discounts:
-$5 per working buzzer brought for use in the tournament
-$15 per experienced staffer provided by the school.
-$10 for distance (>150 miles) (1 per school)
-$20 per school for new schools – schools that have not played quiz bowl for at least 2 years. For local schools, WVIA and IU tournaments do not count against you for this discount. (1 per school)

The minimum fee per team is $50.

Checks should be made to "Lakeland Activity Fund" and can be sent to Lakeland High School, ATTN: Jill Marino, 1355 Lakeland Drive, Scott Twp., PA 18433. Check or cash will be accepted at registration on the 14th.

Lunch: Lakeland’s Art Club will offer pizza for lunch on site and snacks will be on sale all day. Prices and details TBD. We recommend staying at the school for lunch or bring your own lunch. The nearest restaurants are over 5 miles away. You may leave for lunch at your own risk, but with the warning that we will restart the tournament promptly at the announced restart time, and we start reading packets to whomever is in their assigned rooms.

Sign-up: To sign up (or for further information) please email me at [email protected] with how many teams you would like to register, number of buzzers, and staff. Please let me know if you also need an invoice. As we hope to draw several new schools, we gladly welcome anyone with moderator experience living close to us to come to volunteer as well!

The day of Competition:
Registration will be open at 8am. Teams ordering pizzas for lunch will be able to pay for them at that time. All teams' coaches and players should be on site at 8:30am at the latest. We want to start meetings for teams and staffers at 8:30am and start the first matches at 9:00am.
Everyone will play a bracketed round-robin of morning matches, most likely five rounds before we break for lunch. Going into the fifth round you'll be told what time the mid-tournament meeting will be held, when you'll receive your afternoon brackets. We'll also give out prizes based on morning stats at that mid-tournament meeting. After that brief meeting, everyone will be playing their new brackets, with matches against teams of similar record from the morning. Depending on final team count, everyone will be guaranteed either nine or ten matches over the course of the day. We expect all teams to play out their full schedule before leaving to allow everyone to have the chance to play the matches they came to play.

Top finishers will qualify for the 202 NAQT High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT) in Atlanta and the 2020 Small School National Championship Tournament (SSNCT) in Chicago, and we anticipate they will qualify for PACE-NSC at the Hyatt Regency which is also in Chicago. Individual and team statistics will be available soon after the tournament is over, and running stats will be posted throughout the day.

We look forward to hosting this event. It’s been a long time coming! Hope to see you at Lakeland on Saturday, December 14th.
