One thing that used to make me uncomfortable at the NAC was its unpredictableness. NAC always has lots of upsets and surprise teams. These days, that unpredictable factor is a plus to me. It is kind of exciting.
Old dogs do learn new tricks. For the past three years I have let my active seniors choose which nationals we will attend should we qualify. In 2004, we went to the NAC-New Orleans and NAQT in Houston. In 2005, we entered NAQT in Chicago and PACE in Orlando. This year my senior captain wanted to enter NAQT primarily because of the Jeopardy tryout. I did decide that we would only do one nationals this year.

We had a Brad Rutter question for the PACE all-star game a few years ago too. Hope it was equally as trashy...insaneindian wrote:I hope San Antonio (the riverwalk, etc.) is fun. I can tell Brad Rutter I got a question right about him...at a trash tournament

and Wilmington Charter gets to play both Clear Lake AND Bryam Hills A in prelim rounds (which will make it harder to have those four teams in separate quarters of the playoffs)BroNi wrote:My prediction...
Top 4 will be Seton Hall, Clear Lake, Charter of Wilmington, and Bryam Hills A.
and Bryam Hills A will place first in San Antonio
I would not count out White Plains, who made a 2nd place showing at Half Hollow Hills on this format out of ~80 teams and doesn't play any powerhouses in the prelims. West Chester East (Varsity and JV) and Kellenberg also deserve mention. In fact, I notice San Antonio is packed with much talent, and whoever gets out of there has a decent chance of taking it all.
Let me officially downplay our chances here. We do not practice this format, and every year manage to lose about half our rounds. In fact, if we can get through the tournament without me having to protest or "appeal to the Supreme Court", I will consider the effort a victory. Seems every year there's a question with two possible answers and we give the wrong one.

I think I'll actually answer that. I can't speak for T here, but if I've learned one thing in life, it's take what you can get for free. Whether it's free samples at the grocery store or a trip to San Antonio, you might as well take it. Especially when there hasn't exactly been anything given to you in your life.
And like I have explained before, our local TV tournament pays for our trip when we win the Delaware Comcast Academic Challenge.
So umm...that's why I want to go. Not necessarily to compete in the tournament, which may or may not be fun. But I'm sure we can find a way to have fun in San Antonio. If not, there's always Poker and Super Smash Brothers.

And they also get to play 5x Ohio State Champion and 2-3 time National Top-5 (at least at ASCN) -- Copley...and Wilmington Charter gets to play both Clear Lake AND Bryam Hills A in prelim rounds (which will make it harder to have those four teams in separate quarters of the playoffs)
That is quite a loaded bracket huh...

Sunday 1:00 v. Fairfield
Sunday 2:00 v. Grundy Center
Sunday 5:00 v. Krelim-Hillsdale
Monday 9:30 v. New Rochelle
Monday 11:30 v. Clear Lake
Monday 4:30 v. Byram Hills A
Does "they" refer to White Plains or Byram Hills? Oh, and we didn't know who Copley was, so I stand corrected when I said White Plains schedule was all easier teams. Chip says the scheduling algorithm is a "matter of public knowledge". Does anyone know what the algorithm is?
And I'll point to Abhi's post as the answer to DumbJacques. You win the TV tournament, your trip to nationals is paid. I liked New Orleans, and I think I'll like San Antonio. In the downtime the kids school me in Super Smash Brothers, so how can you beat that?

From the QU website:
Although I've attended NAC many times, I've never sat down to see if I could reconstruct the order and therefore the pairing procedure. Might be worth a go. Of course, since NAC doesn't have a defined "end of Round 1, beginning of Round 2", reconstruction would be very tricky. Plus, because of some teams' scheduling requests (e.g. all games on one day), there have been numerous times when two teams are paired, one playing their first game against the other playing their third.
IIRC, the rules about ten years ago (or maybe the packet sent to coaches) alluded to, but didn't completely spell out, the procedure. It was something along the lines of 1 plays 2, 3 plays 4, etc. for the first pairing, then 1 plays 3, 2 plays 4, etc. for the second pairing, and so forth. It was the "and so forth" wording that was a bit vague.1. Each team competing in the tournament shall be guaranteed six qualifying round matches. For the convenience of the participants, qualifying round pairings shall be made at random according to the teams' estimated time of arrival at the competition venue, as noted on the registration forms. These forms may be made a matter of public record. A standard tournament chart will be filled in from top to bottom as the teams are listed in order of E.T.A.

I recall that it was spelled out before. Teams are scheduled based on the order of registration at first. Then they are paired up usually as 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8... ; 1-3, 2-4, 5-7, 6-8...; with one 1-(n), 2-(n-1), 3-(n-2), ...
But they also reserve the right to swap matchups around based on "scheduling"... you know... that untimely SAT Saturday morning or that planned tour of the Riverwalk or something.

St. John's School, from Houston, Texas, will only be participating in the NAQT HSNCT this year.
The last time we competed in the Questions Unlimited NAC was in 2002, when we won the New Orleans phase of the competition, only to lose to Irmo (SC) a couple of weeks later in the national semi-finals held that year in Malibu, California.

I'm not going to bother to give you my spreadsheet again, because it doesn't match these results (the Seton Hall coach was puzzled as well). The official response was that the posted scores were transcribed incorrectly, but that these rankings are accurate. I had us as the 11, so that part is at least probably right.

All right, I'm going to bother. The discrepancy is around the 5-8 range. Maybe somebody changed one of Bookers scores on the poster, or it was truly written wrong. Honestly, I don't know what changing the seeds would accomplish because almost all the playoff teams are pretty good.Matt Weiner wrote:
