RESULTS: ACT I (11/18/06) at Spotswood HS (Penn Laird, VA)

Post by msuter »

The 17th Annual ACT I Tournament will be held Nov. 18, 2006, at Spotswood High School in Penn Laird, Va., which is near Harrisonburg at the intersection of I-81 and US 33. This tournament is open to public and private schools, both in-state and out-of-state.

We can field up to 36 teams at a cost of $50 per team with credits for multiple teams and working buzzer systems (up to 2 per school). Schools that register at the same time for both ACT I and ACT II, tentatively scheduled for March 17, 2007, get an additional rebate.

All teams play 5 preliminary round-robin matches with the top 16 teams (W-L and pts. earned) going to the single-elimination finals. Match format is 3 rounds: round 1 is 10 tossups with subject-related bonuses; round 2 is a 10-question themed 2-minute worksheet; and round 3 is 10 slightly more difficult and more pyramidal tossups without bonuses. All questions are reboundable. The questions are house-written and focus on core high school subjects (math, science, social studies, and English) but also include mythology, philosophy, fine arts, foreign language, sports, and pop culture.

Contact me at [email protected] for a registration form or for more information. The registration deadline is November 3.

Do we have a field update, or is it too early for that?

Twenty teams from 13 schools competed in ACT I yesterday. In an exciting final match, Maggie Walker (playing with three players from their A and B teams) was behind 65-140 at the end of round 1 and 125-210 at the end of the worksheet round. They went on a run in the third round, answering four consecutive 20-point questions to pull to within 5, but Gonzaga was able to hold them off and win by 65. Congratulations to both teams for fine performances.
