High School Tournament at Florida State University
Tallahassee, Florida
Saturday, April 21, 2007

Your school is invited to enter a team in the PACE Late Spring Tournament. It is to be held on the FSU campus on Saturday, April 21, 2007. Please feel free to contact me, Billy Beyer, at wfb04 at fsu dot edu or (386) 334-4109 with any questions, or to register your team(s).

This is intended as a high school tournament. One team may participate from each school. However, if you provide one competent moderator, your school will be allowed to bring one extra team; two competent moderators, two extra teams, etc. There will not be a separate JV division.

Questions will be distributed across various academic categories, with a smattering of pop culture thrown in. There will be approximately six preliminary rounds, followed by single-elimination playoffs. There will be bounce back on the bonuses. There is no penalty for answering a tossup incorrectly.

This tournament will follow the 8-6-8 PACE format:
Part 1) In the opening phase, there will be 8 regular tossups with accompanying 20 point bonuses in the same general category as the preceding tossup.
Part 2) In the category quiz phase, there are 6 regular tossups. The team that correctly answers the tossup will be able to choose the category of their 15 point bonus.
Part 3) In the stretch phase, there are 8 tossups with accompanying 30 point bonuses. If a team answers the tossup before "for 10 points" the team will receive 20 points for the tossup instead of the usual 10.

A sample round can be found here:

The entry fee per team is seventy dollars. Questions from the tournament will be sent to teams via email after the tournament. Please make checks out to either "William Beyer" or "College Bowl at Florida State University." Cash is also acceptable.
Discounts include:
-$5 per functional buzzer system
-$10 per moderator

Questions will be pyramidal in nature, allowing teams with the most knowledge to prevail in most cases. At the same time, questions will be on subjects accessible to high school students. College players from around the nation put together this set. Mirrors of the tournament will be happening around the nation in the weeks after our tournament, so please don’t discuss these questions on-line or to friends in other states until after May 13th.

Registration will begin at 8:15 AM EST, with announcements at 8:45, and round one beginning at 9:00. There will be a break for lunch (not provided). The tournament should be over by 5:00 PM.

Tournament headquarters is TBA. Very explicit directions to that location will be provided to all participants well in advance of the event.

The deadline for registration is Wednesday, April 18th, 2007. To register, simply e-mail me stating your interest, and include the following information:
1) Name of your school and coach's name.
2) Cell phone number you can be reached at on the morning of the tournament
3) Number of teams that you will bring.
4) Number of functional buzzer systems you will bring.
5) Number of competent moderators you will bring.

Only two teams signed up, so the April 21st tournament has been cancelled. If there is any interest in it being held on May 5th, let me know. These questions will likely be top notch, so I encourage teams to sign up.
