An early announcement to reserve a future date....

LIFT VII (Long Island Fall Tournament VII) will be held on Saturday, 10/27/07, the last Saturday in October.

Details will be posted as the date approaches, but for now we can tell you that it will be using a NAQT "A" set and that the games will be 20 questions/bonuses untimed.

Here are some details concerning LIFT VII

- $60.00 First team, $50.00 each additional
- $10.00 discount/buzzer system, $10.00 discount/moderator (maximum total discount $50.00)

- NAQT set 71A (probably our last year with A sets)

- Guaranteed at least 6 games - very likely more for we are going to try to hold 2 echelons of single elimination playoffs - upper and lower levels

- It will either be held at Kellenberg Memorial HS (Uniondale, LI, NY) or Northport HS (Northport, LI, NY)

- Please email me (bronigel at Kellenberg.org), or reply here, if you are interested in attending....and how many teams.

Further information....

This year, Kellenberg will be running the tourney solo. Therefore the location will be at Kellenberg MHS in Uniondale, Long Island, NY, right off of Exit M4 West from the Meadowbrook Parkway.

Registration will be from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., with the first round starting at 8:45 a.m. The Award ceremony will be at 6:00 p.m.

As in the past, we will have a constantly updated projection of the preliminary results as soon as they are entered for all to see and check during the day.

Last year we had 50 teams from 22 schools. We can accommodate around 85 teams. So as a early Registration incentive, from now to Sept. 28th, we will not place any limit on the amount of teams that a school would like to bring. However, I reserve the right to limit the number of teams from any school that registers after that date.

A "busload" is probably 7, possibly 6 or 8.

Well, Charter G was in the top half of Byko's ratings last year.

I actually cut a dozen people for my own sanity. But we still have about 35 players.

Brother Nigel, What happened to Northport ..why arent we hosting with you this year? I graduated in '06, in college now so I dont know whats happening with Northport quiz bowl.

Last year's coach stepped down, and I couldn't get her replacement to answer a number of emails, so I presumed they weren't interested.

He contacted me recently and may help out anyway....but at Kellenberg.

There will also be an OPTIONAL trash round during lunch. The trash will be house-written with a well-varied distribution, mostly centered on movies, TV, and music.

Any chance of going to a round of 32 in the playoffs this year? That probably would mean no more than 6 prelims if you keep a spare packet.

We might consider it. The other option, which we are tending more toward right now, is to keep the 7 prelim. rounds and then have two single elim. brackets, one of the top 16 teams and one of teams 17 thru 32.

Forget what I said about the trash round. Due to technical complications, it ain't happenin'.

Due to Homecoming and me being out of town, Bloomfield is now not coming instead of tentative.

The tournament was enjoyable, as all was, though I do have a few things to say.

The tournament was rather long. Prelims weren't over until about 3:30. Sure, some leeway must be given seeing as there were 68 teams, but it still dragged on. I can understand BroNi's logic in releasing the questions when all the rooms are done, but this means that your tournament runs only as fast as your slowest room and with rookies with little-to-no experience that means rounds can be going as long as 50 minutes. With seven prelims, thats almost 6 hours.

Aside from the length there were no real issues. I know that Charter A was a bit disappointed that they were not able to take a crack at Stuy A without Douglas. But finally winning the tournament made up for them not having a chance to play Stuy A.

The final was a well played match. It came down to the last question (mainly due to two back-to-back negs by Charter's own Henry, but he redeemed himself). Final score Charter 350 Moravian 330.

The tournament, despite a vicious accusation of fraudulent quiz bowl aimed at Charter by a certain New York school due to a team member's speech impediment, was enjoyable as always.

P.S. I would like to personally congratulate Ben and Moravian for a tournament well-played. Ever since I first met the team at NAQT NATs 2006 they have always been polite and worthy opponents. Kudos for improving the team into one of the strongest out of PA.

Tell tell tell

It involves the moderator awarding points until a coach screamed her down and she retracted her ruling. I tried to deal with it at the tournament but it was left unresolved because the opponents left and it was in a consolation match whose impact affected the final ranking between 9 and 16.

I'd really rather just let the incident be over. It was an unfortunate blemish on a long but enjoyable tournament. And board drama usually leaves a foul taste in my mouth.

And I too would like to extend kudos to Ben and Moravian. A well-played tournament all around.

Although the tournament started out pretty slow, it was still a lot of fun, and the prelim readers were pretty good, for the most part. Congrats to Charter A for winning and to Moravian and GDS for beating us in tight games (well, the latter less so, but there were a bunch of buzzer races) to make the top three.

Also, slight nitpick: our game against Moravian was 330-325, not 305. The latter would not have been nearly as intense when, down by 40, we powered tossup 20 and got the first two parts of the bonus.

I was also in the midst of the biggest drubbing in playoff history, I'm sure. 690 to -5? Ouch. But at least Charter A went on to win it all.

I'm still glad I got Stephen Colbert with power. Otherwise, it's -20.

BTW, one prelim reader (green shirt) had to be the fastest speaker I've ever heard. He will be the guy who reads the side effects on drug commercials in a few years

Actually back in the day on a similar format and on much harder questions TJ A beat Walton 885-95 in the playoffs of the NAQT national championships. Right after that they beat the eventual 2nd place team 760-30. Also, this year in the national playoffs Maggie Walker won a game 710-30. But yeah, 690- -5 isnt pretty, sorry that happened to you.
Also, negging is a solid tradition, glad to see excellent young practitioners.

I have the results, and your neg totals were 17 in the prelims(which is what counted for the neg award) and 6 more in the playoffs, which total to 23, not 24, and in the part that counted for the neg awards, you had 17.

Finally, as a NAQT HS National Championhip qualifying tournament, the top 15% earn berths. Consolation matches were played during the playoff rounds to determine overall final rankings. Therefore the following teams qualify for the HS NCT...

4) Hunter A
5) Stuyvesant A
6) Bergan CA A
7) HGreeley A

Also, if the tournament wants to affiliated with PACE, the top 4 teams automatically qualify for the NSC. The quarterfinalists are eligible for wildcard bids if they do not otherwise qualify.

With this field size, it would actually be the top 8 automatically qualifying (n=68).
