Top 4 (in no order):

BMHS
Russellville
Hoover
Grissom

Honorable Mentions:

Randolph - not a bad team, but if they play like they did at Regionals, they may not even make playoffs.

ISS - not consistent enough (and that's coming from a Brindlee Mountain player). Russellville always seems to beat them, but I'm not sure why.

LAMP - state questions should be more pyramidal, which does not play to their strengths.

St. Paul's - see LAMP.

The only ones I'm unsure of are ISS and Russellville. ISS could beat Russellville, but Russellville is always a very good team... up until the finals, where they always seem to choke. If they could get over whatever block is stopping them, they could very well make top 2.

Of course, my speculations always go right out the window once I see pools.

Eh, it happens.

Plus, if a decent or good player gets hot, bad things can happen. I figure this Russellville bunch will at least be decent at state, but next year SHOULD be their shot. They're all back...

Sorta... Our closest match was DAR, and we won it by well over 100... It is a weird ASCA/NAQT hybrid wherein 100 points is akin to 300 in NAQT.

From ASCA Tournament Day one:

I don't know much. We only played three rounds today. Brindlee Mountain is 3-0, having beaten LAMP, Austin, and Pleasant Valley. We've got ASFA and Hillcrest left.

One pool has Hoover, Indian Springs, and St. Paul's - that should be interesting.

The other pool has Grissom and Russellville - that one should be predictable.

I'll post more after the tournament ends tomorrow... I'm not sure why they drag this out over two days...

And, of course, my alma mater really clarified their pool with Grissom by...losing to Pelham by playing the absolute worst match they'd played probably since they were in middle school.

And now, to the good stuff...

The 2008 Top 4:

1. Hoover
2. Brindlee Mountain
3. Indian Springs
4. Russellville

Russellville lost to Grissom and was the 8th seed in the playoffs but upset the same Grissom team in the first round 230-225 on the last question.

They then got their clocks cleaned the next two matches (although, in their defense, Hoover was insane today).

The match with Grissom was pretty epic I believe. I love James Weldon Johnson and Henry Ford!! After the loss to Hoover we lost all composure and basically went to sleep, but 4th is pretty respectable for a team that went (1-7) last year.

Losing to Hoover sucked... They were great today and we played one of our worst games of all time against them.

That being said, though, Russellville beating Grissom almost makes up for it. That was sweet.

Good Lord, you think that Golden Tiger avatar's big enough?

Yeah, the Johnson and Ford were damned awesome.

Lee, you can't imagine how happy I was they beat Grissom...all the heartbreak those guys gave me when I played, it was at least good to see that Grissom doesn't have the mind control they used to have over everyone.

Vance is coming back for ISS, and he was the only one from there to be on All-Star and the only one you should be worried about for ASCA.

I know Charlie's a senior, but whether or not the other guy form Grissom that made All-Star is returning is a mystery to me.

The only one I know that is returning from Hoover is the blonde guy, whose name escapes me at the moment.

Russellville really should be in good shape. This is as stacked a team that Russellville's had since the 2001 Chris and Adam Pace death machine.

It's about time to wrap up this year's thread. What are everyone's final thoughts?

Personally, I'm disappointed in Brindlee Mountain's overall performance. Yes, we got 1st and 2nd at NAQT (which I still put much more stock in than ASCA). But, we shouldn't have lost to Hoover at ASCA. Furthermore, I don't think we should have lost the matches we did to ISS, Hoover, and Grissom this year. Hopefully we'll be able to play to our full potential at Nationals and put the statewide stuff behind us.

Hoover did a great job this year. They should be proud. ISS also did well.

Well I am proud of my bunch and since it is going to be my last group at Scottsboro, I think we went out on a good note. Just so everyone knows, I got the pink slip and I am pretty sure this will kill the program at Scottsboro due to no one caring enough to even do it.
On another note, I think BMHS, Hoover, and ISS all did great jobs this year. I really hope that all the programs continue in the future..

It's sad that Scottsboro will be missing out. There was a ton of potential there. It's a shame that they don't recognize all that you've done. I'm truly sorry, my friend.

That blows goats...seriously, the Scottsboro program, IMO, was doing it the right way...start them early, and just build the pipeline from the middle school on. Its a shame, that was a program that could have at the very least made some noise in Huntsville in the next few years.

Not usually my thing to post here, but I have to add my voice to the chorus. Matt's a class act, and Scottsboro's Scholars Bowl team was headed in a good direction under his guidance. This state's way of handling funding for teaching positions is inane.

Matt- let me know where you end up so we can make sure you're still in the loop.

Obviously, I'm proud of my kids coming out and blowing the doors off at ASCA State, because they played out of their minds on Saturday. That said, I think that the format of the tournament really favored our style this year. Brindlee and ISS are both outstanding teams that beat us during the season, and I rather hope I don't see Brindlee at NAQT Nationals unless it's at a scrimmage event. Russellville is going to be brutal next year, too. Grissom is always strong, too. Someone else will come along and be tough, like Northridge did this year, like ASCA did in previous years, like LAMP does every year. It would be a lot easier to make sense of Alabama quiz bowl if all areas of the state played more frequently; we might see Grissom twice a year, while we'll play Russellville and Brindlee five or six times a season or more.

The one thing I'm MOST pleased about is that Alabama quiz bowl is continuing to push our state into the picture nationally. I can't imagine what might happen to the universe if an Alabama school placed top five in a national tournament....
