oooooohhh.... Yeah.... funny you heard about it before I did. Yes, that's my school (hangs head). Given the article speaks of some being up for expulsion, it sounds like some were dealing. I've heard through the grapevine that one has already been withdrawn from school and enrolled in a military academy by his parents.
What can I say? In every class, in every school, there's always at least one kid who literally thinks he's smarter than everyone else. And if it's someone who is also susceptible to making bad choices... This is what happens.

The Loyola Academy Ramblers will be making their first state appearance since 1996 on Friday. There was a 3-way Ring of Death between New Trier, Maine South and Loyola and with scores among tied teams being the tie breaker, LA came out on top. I don't know what it is about us and losing to Maine South in the State Tournament, though.

Since the result of the Zion Benton Sectional are not posted on the IHSA website, I will put it here. Stevenson won the sectional with a perfect record of 3-0. The incredible Buffalo Grove Bison finished with a 2-1 record, only losing to Stevenson by 70 (we won toss-ups 11-10). Lake Zurich finished with a 1-2 record with Fremd going 0-3. Good luck to Stevenson!

I had the pleasure of moderating at the Maine South sectional this morning and I commend all the teams for some great playing on some less than stellar questions. Congrats to the Ramblers for a well-earned berth at State. Congrats also to Wheaton North who I saw won their sectional as well. Of course, I must tip my hat to Mr. Egan for running a classy show as usual.

Good luck to all teams going to State. We certainly have an interesting mix of Class AA schools this year.

Way to make it sound way too official Matt. But honestly, while it was not the most talented sectional (that belongs to WWS), from what it looks like it was definitely the most competitive.

Observations:

-Maybe it was just me getting used to them, but the questions seemed mildly better, even with the artistic dance and driver's ed. The author biography lead-ins were still prominent, but the ones I can remember, Pinkerton = Hammett and Wealthy New Yorkers = Wharton, weren't terrible.

-This sectional isn't going to change next year, because Ben for NT, Joe for us, and Andrew from MS all played great and will be back next year.

-The whole thing was run very efficiently, and having two of the best moderators in the state, in my opinion, Mr. Laudermith and Mr. Egan, was a huge plus.

PS. I wanna point out that I did say that H-F was going to be the dark horse that people forget about this year, and wah lah, they are going to Peoria.

They definitely did seem mildly better: although some of the more egregious complaints were still there, the literature was considerably better (probably down to 60-70% lit crit clunkers). I feel bad that I guessed kite and parallelogram for Geometry Definition Bowl - gaah, twas cylinder.

The feeling I got overall was that it would be much easier to post constructive and positive viewpoints on these questions compared to Regionals. Maybe it was that my tolerance for inaccessible answer selection is a little less at Sectionals.

Was it just me, or did it seem like converting a bonus was harder than passing a kidney stone with the exception of bonuses 25-30 of Round 2? At the half of the Byron/Sterling Newman match, the total bonus conversion was 19 points out of 180 possible, and at the half of Newman/Morrison, it was 21/160. I didn't quite get the feeling that the teams were dropping the ball too badly. Thanks to bad bonus play from TU's 1-24, Byron would have somehow been losing to a very, very sub-par Newman team if the y-int/amplitude/period of trig functions, angles of regular polygons, and the Updike/Ellison/Baldwin/(Brad's poor memory) bonuses hadn't fallen in their lap at the end. Anyone else notice this sort of thing?

A hearty congratulations to all teams advancing to State! Who's gonna start the prognosticating?

My personal opinion:

1. While most of the overall questions were fine, there was a subset of the literature that went to the extremes. There were some lit bonuses that were flat-out impossible, followed by a lit bonus that was really easy.

2. On one level you can say "well, being challenged is good", and I agree. However, if you only get one category to go to an extreme level of difficulty, the question writer inadvertently skews the rounds against any team with a strength in literature. My opinion is that (with the exception of the "cylinder" question) the math was challenging but hardly "impossible". I think the science was very doable, though was hardly restrictive to basic science. The social studies was rooted in history, and except for the sociology which I think is mostly bunk, was challenging and very doable (I was pleasantly surprised to see the bonus on Native American civil rights swept .... I figured 2-3 parts were doable, but the first part I had never heard of before). I thought the arts were doable, though very tough to sweep on a bonus, (which is fine by me). Literature was the only main topic where you would get consistent bonuses that I truly felt were really college level questions, and were passed by even the most studied teams. Even two of our English teachers in the room found them obscure.

Even with this, they were not every question. I agree that the sectional questions were better.

Good luck to everyone. It is a difficult year to predict.

I will be on AM 720 (http://www.wgnradio.com) to talk about the tournament and read some questions Thursday morning between 11:00 and 12:00 (starting a little after 11:00 and ending sometime from 11:30-12:00 depending on how much else they have to do that day).

I personally feel that it isn't impossible to write good industrial arts questions, but unfortunately most of them focus on specific tools (frustrating even for someone who's taken 4 years of tech ed/industrial arts courses- an example was the pliers bonus, which I 10'd) and obscure facts (how far apart studs are in a wall) rather than on things that people might learn in other classes, say, "The triangular bit on top of the Parthenon is called a _______", something which I learned in 6th grade but isn't necessarily something EVERYONE knows. While those denizens of lower latitudes in Illinois might disapprove, I think most architecture and industrial arts teachers would find them acceptable. In fact, it might not be unwise for question writers to start with the thought "could I myself answer this question?", a thought which is often ignored on the theory that if questions were that easy, there wouldn't be any point to them.

Agriculture questions can be similarly reformed-- a question about fertilizers that would be accessible to chemistry whizzes, or a question about crops that could be answered by a smart biology student should be the norm, not questions about pig breeding that hardly anyone knows about (except, that is, the people who sign up for bass fishing instead of scobowl).

Speaking of bass fishing, some miscellaneous questions could be about other IHSA sports, although that could seem a bit too self-absorbed.

For those keeping score at home, studs are placed 16" apart on center, that is the centers of the boards are 16" apart. The triangular bit on top of the Parthenon is a pediment.

Nope. I wouldn't trust any writer willing to write about IHSA athletics (with a total level of interest limited in 99% of cases to "my own school") when there are hardly any professional athletics questions already - and there is some interest in professional sports, methinks. Not to mention the argument for making those questions fair (inherently impossible if your school comes up) and pyramidal (inherently impossible because all clues are equally obscure, except possibly the giveaway).

So who you guys got at State? Wheaton North is the obvious choice, and you can't go 3 posts on this board without seeing something from someone with a Loyola connection, so I'd call them a sentimental favorite, but I can't think of anyone who'd be unhappy if Auburn finally won one after so many near misses, either.
But I think I'll cast my lot with a darkhorse and go with O'Fallon, if for no other reason than a good friend of mine is an alum!

So, permit me to post my top 4 Class AA teams and you can mock them mercilessly tomorrow night:
1.) O'Fallon
2.) Auburn
3.) Wheaton North
4.) Loyola

Oh, and I'll excuse Mr. Egan (though he can share after the fact) and participants from prognosticating!

2. Loyola

4. I'll take Springfield, what the heck.
8. Sandburg

1). Auburn
2). Loyola
3). WN
4). Stevenson

Other issues: What is the combined difference between Auburn/WN and Sandburg/HF in the four games where the members of the first group play members of the second group? Vegas line is 1200.

How many more negs does Auburn have than Greg?

How long will Brad's critique of the questions be? Vegas line: 7 different critiques (i.e. a list numbered 1-7).

Class A:
1. Latin
2. Fairfield
3. Byron
4. PORTA

Class AA:
1. Wheaton North
2. Springfield
3. Rockford Auburn
4. Lincolnshire Stevenson

That group of Springfield, Stevenson, Loyola, and O'Fallon is just plain nasty!

Apparently, the two titles don't necessarily interesect in their minds.

Congrats to Rockford Auburn on a well-earned victory! I hope they continue their success at Nationals.

Great work by Stevenson, Wheaton North, and Springfield as well.

Well, New Trier came within a question of doing it last year... it can't be THAT uncommon. But yeah, it's probably going to be more common now that Masonic is run on legit questions.

The "triple crown" in this case began in 2005, when the first NAQT State Tournament was held. I don't know who won NAQT State in 2005 or 2006, but off the top of my head I do know that the triple crown did not happen in 2005 (Fremd won Masonic, Stevenson won IHSA). I don't think Fremd won NAQT in '06, but they did win Masonic and IHSA.

Ouch, John. That hurts.

But seriously, thanks for the kind words, everyone. We've been waiting for this moment a long time, and we are indebted to all of the dedicated people who work so hard to make something worthwhile out of the morass that is Illinois Scholastic Bowl. I'd also like to thank all of our opponents for their sportsmanship and competition. It's always a blast.

I moderated WN/Auburn. Neither team was immune from an occasional misstep, but I have to say that Auburn was able to very quickly recover and move on. They were very loose, and based on my previous observations, this was the most notable difference from past Auburn teams ......

That, and they seemingly had four players who could score at will.

I moderated Springfield v. O'Fallon. While Springfield had the game in hand for nearly the whole time, O'Fallon seemed ot recover and play very well after that. Springfield looked very solid

Byron v. Latin: low scoring, but that was in the scond round, and that was the "tough" round of the day. Byron won narrowly.

Take the under .... the questions were tough, but otherwise not too bad (aside from nearly every lit question still being a biography).

I would be very intereted in hearing overall critique on the science questions (regionals through state). No reason in particular.

Hey ... Negs don't matter if you get more TU's than the other guys.

Besides, my neg record is as bad as anybody's. I have more stupid negs in crunch situations than anybody else I've ever played against.

Trust me. Really stupid negs. I think I had 3 in one half of a 16-TU game vs. Ignatius at Fenwick. That was epic failure =)

I actually wasn't there...and then my internet died last night so I couldn't post that (or predictions). From what I've heard, it was basically the same deal as Sectionals, but harder. Although, for old time's sake, here's a token "QUIT DOING DRIVERS ED IN STATE FINAL GAMES" rant: Quit doing driver's education in games at the state final level, please. Just don't do it anymore.

A hearty congratulations to Auburn! They've been playing consistently at a level this area has never seen, and it's great to see Coach Greene bring home the top trophy after so many close calls.

Special thanks to the moderators (Tom Egan & MIke Laudermith) on this board who did a WONDERFUL job moderating, but especially to David Reinstein for his hard work editing and suggesting revisions on the first pyramidal set ever used at our tournament (I owe you dinner or something, at least!). Thanks to Cheri Quillin, too, for being willing to take on this task of writing pyramidal toss-ups.

I'm glad to see that the high school game is "looking backward" to the middle schools. I hope they benefit from this just as the HS people have from college.
Few questions, if anyone could elaborate:
Is that the first pyramidal set in IL middle school in general?
Was the difficulty/composition of the answer space changed from "normal" middle school?
Are those questions being released?
Finally, how did the students and coaches respond to them?

How about PORTA winning Class A? They flew under everyone's radar, even though they won many tournaments and won the (possibly) hardest sectional, Farmington, Peoria Heights, and Peoria Christian, and won convincingly against Byron for the title. How about Cody, Isaac, and Simon for All-state?

Ah, many questions...
I believe this was the first middle school tournament of this size (28 schools, 40 teams) to employ a pyramidal model on the toss-ups. I can't say it's the first, as Loyola's feeder tournament is written in-house and uses pyramidal questions.

Being an 11th year middle school coach, I'd have to say the answer space stuck with what we consider to be 'normal', though we did kick up a few things that don't get asked in traditional (that is, Questions Galore) packets, such as days and colors in multiple foreign languages. I requested that Quillin's Questions base the literature toss-up questions off of the 2008 Rebecca Caudill Award nominees (20 of them) and this seemed to be well-received as I warned the coaches of this months ago, giving their kids ample time to read those books. Those teams that did were rewarded for their diligence. Clearly, some teams ignored the advice! Anyway, cutting down the answer space made the literature questions much more competitive, and they went dead no more than 20% of the time.
The questions are the copyrighted property of Quillin's questions. She has been really nice and would probably be amenable to releasing at least one round but you'd have to ask her ([email protected]).
No coaches approached me with any comments, but I will be soliciting opinions in a questionnaire shortly. I'll let you know!
