All things considered, if you could find someone selling a used Quiz-A-Matic, that would probably be your best bet. Those things are durable as anything, are daisy-chained with a reasonable length of wire between the buzzers, and pretty much only require two types of minor maintenance: putting the black tops back on top of the buzzer when they fall off and getting the metal thing that hits the bell back on track so you get an actual ding.

The Quiz-A-Matic is the only buzzer system that I'm aware of that has been endorsed by Steve Kaplan.
