I'd say Lynyrd Skynyrd somewhere in there. Granted, some people will think I'm bonkers.

Given Riley's age .... some of the bands he chooses need to be disqualified, given the U.S. was still technically part of Britain.

Possible choices I don't think have been mentioned yet: Kiss? Ramones? Velvet Underground? Queensryche?

I'm surprised no one else had mentioned Kiss.

We should do a tournament to determine the greatest rock band ever.

Hint.

Kiss is fronted by an Israeli.

its close enough, not to mention most of the bands mentioned have had some key lineup changes at some point, and that not every member in all of these bands was either US born or raised.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND
I'm stunned there's a discussion on this. Tell me what American band has done jazz, funk, three-chord, pop, and soul better than them. It may not have been totally innovative, but it was the greatest synthesis possible with the perfect set of musicians. If anything, see what he tried to rock with without E Street. When the only one of them that was around was Roy (who makes me drop points for his work with Celine Dion), you got Human Touch and Lucky Town. If Springsteen is in the top five of American musicians (I think so), the E Street Band is at the top.

The biggest problem with this discussion is that, as discussed, the States don't produce great bands. The States produces great individuals, but usually these guys are just men with dudes in the background. Each member of the Beatles was a vital part of the band. Same with Led Zeppelin (though we'll save my thoughts on them for later). Same, to a lesser extent, with the Stones. On the contrary, the only time anyone ever truly cared about the backing band to Bob Dylan was when, quelle surprise, they were a bunch of Canucks. I think the individual performances by Americans may outshine others, but when it comes to bands, most of them don't come from here.
