Dorman Cavalier Academic Challenge (1/19/08)-Spartanburg, SC

Post by Eric Huff »

Dorman High School is pleased to announce January 19, 2008 as the date for the 18th Annual Cavalier Academic Challenge. As always, there will be separate fields for junior varsity (grades 6-10) and varsity (grades 6-12). Last year we hosted 135 teams from 7 states, and we are looking forward to a similar field this year.

Registration information will be mailed in the coming weeks, and we expect to have the tournament website up soon. Until then, if you have any questions, or if you are interested in registering, please feel free to email me ( [email protected] ).

Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you all on January 19

We sent out official invitations last week, and the responses are beginning to trickle in. Currently the field sits at 19. If you would like more information, or if you are interested in registering, e-mail me.

Also, we have negotiated a rate for a block of rooms at the Spartanburg Radisson for anyone interested in staying over night. Information about the hotel can be found here:

http://www.radisson.com/spartanburgsc

You will have to call the hotel directly to book the special rate of $75/night
(864-574-2111). Be sure to mention the Dorman Cavalier Academic Challenge.

Thanks again, and we look forward to seeing you all on January 19.

I have updated the field above. We currently have 92 teams (56 Varsity and 36 JV). The early registration deadline is Monday, January 7, so if you are interested in participating, let me know ASAP. We don't need payment by the 7th, just notification that you're coming. We're happy to accept payment any time up to the day of the tournament.

If you have any questions, or if you would like to register, send me an email.

Thanks!

how many people are canceling because of snow? Norcross cannot go, and I believe Gwinnett County closed schooling events. I'm not sure how many Southwest teams this affects but it's really a shame.

Cabarrus County, NC had three teams going (Robinson, Central Cabarrus, and Hickory Ridge), and all were kept from going. I wouldn't be so supersonic, thermonuclear pissed about it if my principal hadn't waited until we were in Gaffney to call me and tell me to bring the kids home.

Bummer...

I totally commiserate.

Of course, it's better than if the school administrators decide to cancel the tournament for you, and you didn't know until you showed up.

That's when you shouldn't have answered the phone... You know, there was "no service"...

If I had known it was him, that would've been the plan... I thought maybe it was a parent, so I picked up. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess. <shrug>

Gwinnett County Schools Did NOT keep any school from going to Dorman. We were there today and it amazes meany GA team did not show up. There were no weather-related problems at all coming or goiung home tonight.

Norcross was told that we were not allowed to hold any school functions. Even our Robotics Team, which had an event at the high school today, was not allowed to come in. I assumed it was the County but I suppose not. In any case, the weather reports said the driving conditions would be extremely dangerous, especially since the storm was going NE. Driving for 2 1/2 hours in the early morning in those conditions was enough for Norcross to cancel its attendance. Probably the first time snow has stopped our traveling ever, and hopefully the last.

Dorman results

Surprise for Governor's School to make the quarterfinals, as they beat James Island by five points at USC, and have some good players, but how many teams showed up at the tournament out of the ones that registered?

James Island's varsity would have gone, but it was a big weekend for ski trips to the mountains for one of the local churches, and one of our top players was out.

I thought that Irmo played Brookwood. Was it Irmo or Russell that beat Aiken in the round of 16 in the varsity division? James Island didn't field a varsity team.

A few of the possible top teams were kept away due to the weather or whatever (ski trip?)... Norcross, Danville, James Island, Walton, etc.

Our final match against Dunbar was one of the closest I've played in a while... both sides negged a few times, so it went back and forth, and we ended up winning by 30 points, I think. But definitely congrats to them on their performance, and especially the JV dominance (Dunbar A vs Dunbar B), with the B team having upset Brookwood A, if I'm not mistaken.

Gotta say thanks to the Dorman crew for running this tournament with surprisingly small delays between rounds - that was a nice change of pace from most tournaments.

Gwinnett County canelled all Saturday school activities.

Norcross was set to host a 10 team, one day basketball showcase featuring nationally ranked teams from several states playing top GA teams, with the final game telecast on regional television. Despite all the out of state teams having already arrived in the area, it was cancelled with no makeup. I assume the nature of this high profile event led the NHS administration to monitor the weather and the county's response much more closely than some others.

Norcross could not have attended the Cavalier Challenge without ignoring instructions from the school's administrators.
