I took the Teen one today. Did anybody else take it?

I did. The word questions were hard.

Oh, was that today?

Dang.

I plan on failing the college one again tomorrow. Either that or my browser can act up again and the test won't start.

I took the teen one. Wasn't a fan of it at all, either I knew the answer easily or it was something really obscure or unknown to me.

I will be taking the test for the first time tomorrow.

I actually thought most of the questions were very easy, with the occasional one I had no idea. The one question who's topic was "V" I had no idea, but otherwise I thought it was relatively easy.

I want to do it tonight, but I have an astronomy observing session I can't miss at 8 PM that will last for at least an hour. Too bad.

Five letter F word, Mike ???

What?

That wasn't too bad, though. I definitely missed the British general one, and two other ones that I can't think of.

Edit: I appear to have guessed right on the Radium question.

Oh, and maybe you're talking about "frill"?

Yeah, it wasn't that bad. I know I missed at least three or four, and probably something more like seven or eight.

Looking up some of the questions, I realize I didn't miss as many as I thought just be straight up guessing right.

British general ?... I don't remember that one.

The one asking for the dude with a non-pull over sweater named after him. Cardigan turned out to the be answer. All I could think of was the dude who lost at Saratoga who brought the chests of lavish supplies with him.

oh yeah .. i got that off the sweater ... didn't even think about the british general lol

If it's the bird / airline upgrade thing, then it's frill.

I think (and I hope) that was "vicarious."

The test seemed a little bit harder this year than it was last year.

I liked how the only real science question was "absolute zero." if there was anything else that was remotely close to being science, I think I missed it then :(

Thats the one, some of the pop culture ones gave me a scare, barely got in victoria adams (beckham), and managed to pull hinder out of thin air

It was pretty awesomely bad, in so many ways. I can't believe that they asked for absolute zero.

Does anyone know how long it takes them to send out audition e-mails from the online tests?

no idea .... i tried last year and failed (either the test or the random drawing)... but hopefully soon

I wish I could tell you, but, um, I don't remember.

It took about six days last year according to my email records.

I'm always curious what the cutoff for the random pool might be though.

I took the adult test last year and it was several months before I heard anything. I figured I had failed, but then I got something like 6 or 7 months later.

Zac Efron made the Teen Test for me. That alone satisfied me.

This was the case for me as well. I'm not sure if the college/teen tests are processed any faster, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting to hear back from them.

I got an e-mail yesterday saying I had passed the test and made it to the next round of auditions, so some e-mails have been sent out.

Did you do the high school or college test?

Just got a college test email. Unfortunately, the audition happens to be the exact same time as ACF Fall in the southeast...

I just got the college email also. I'm going to try to make the Nashville tryouts three weeks from now.

I got an audition in Nashville for the college tournament but it is on the same day as ACF Fall, so I declined the invite. Most people I've told have thought I am crazy for not going, but given that the odds of being picked are so slim I'd rather go to ACF Fall.

I got one of the New York High School golden tickets in my E-mail, but, as there seems to have been some time-lapse, probably somebody else turned it down first. I'm going.

I got one for New York today. This is about when I remember getting mine last year, so maybe they send out the New York ones late? I'll be going.

I just got one for Chicago, and I'm taking it.

I also just got one for Chicago... but it's the same day as Brainal Leakage.

Now the question is whether I should ditch our own hosted tournament for a chance to get on the college tourney .... why'd they have to make it difficult with that date.

I got one too.... And I have the same dilemma.

I'm supposed to moderate and/or keep stats ... do stuff for the tournament. So yeahhhh ..... I probably shouldn't do Jeopardy as much as I want to .... but I have two days to change my mind.

This is probably a stupid question, but...

Do they like quiz bowl players or not?
and
Should I tell them if I am a quiz bowler

Posted: Mon Nov 05, 2007 3:16 pm
by orangecrayon
One of the questions you'll get asked at the call back is whether you've played quiz bowl and/or had any experience with NAQT (don't remember why they specifically asked about NAQT; think :kenj: has something to do with that).

At my call back last year, there were two or three other current or former quiz bowl players. Didn't seem to be a big issue. The folks there care more about (a) how you do on the buzzer round, (b) where you're from (trying for geographic diversity) and (c) whether you'll be halfway interesting on camera.

Posted: Mon Nov 05, 2007 8:24 pm
by Judson Laipply
what do you mean by "think he( :kenj: ) has something to do with that question??

Do they not want someone like him, or do they?

Posted: Mon Nov 05, 2007 9:10 pm
by Sen. Estes Kefauver (D-TN)
All it means is that Ken Jennings had been active in NAQT and once played quizbowl, and while he was on the show they had scheduling problems because other NAQT people he knew were lined up to play him. After he came on they started getting more conscious of quizbowl in general, I think.

In addition to asking if you have any experience with quiz bowl, they also ask if you personally know anyone who has appeared on the show.

Something that I wish I would have done when I auditioned for it was to treat it like a job interview, especially in terms of personal attire. Most of the older men present were wearing dress shirts and ties, some even had suits on. Most of the women dressed fairly conservatively.
