2008 Housh Classic (01/12/08) at TJHSST (Alexandria, VA)
The Thomas Jefferson It is Academic Team is proud to announce that it will be hosting the house-written 2008 Housh Classic on January 12th, 2008.
As of now, our master math wizard and King of Quizbowl Greyson Lewis is working on something similar to the NAQT Nationals card system for the tournament. If this works out, each team will play 10 rounds in the preliminaries. If it doesn't, well, we'll keep you posted, but each team should be guaranteed at least five preliminary rounds.
With regards to the questions, we are in the process of writing pyramidal, 5-6 line questions. The tournament will feature 20 tossups with related bonuses and perhaps powers if we decide to be cool.
Fees are as follows:
$60 for first team
$50 for additional teams
-$5 for each working set of buzzers
-$10 for >200 miles away
To register, go to our website at http://activities.tjhsst.edu/itsacademic/tjiat.php or email the tournament director Jacob Kohn at [email protected]. This tournament usually features a very competitive and diverse field, and we're hoping that this year's is no different.
Projections for start and end times will be posted as we decide how we are going to do rounds.

On our webpage, if you want to register for our tournament, do not click the link that says "register with the site." Teams have done this before. Several times. It is a bad idea.
Hit the one that says "Registrations for the January 12th, 2007 Housh Classic are now open! You can sign up online." instead.

Ah, excellent name choice. I kept getting your old two names confused because they were only one letter apart.
I have significant experience building the card system. (I think I have the numbers worked out for 10 through 30 or something like that.) If you need help, please ask. David Bykowski is also a wizard at them. Keep in mind that with 32 teams you can only guarantee no repeats through 5 matches. I imagine doing 10 matches with the cards will generate a boatload of repeats.
EDIT: one idea might be to start over in round 6, with a new set of starting numbers. That might help.

Hey, I might just have to come and moderate for the tournament name (I assume this means we're past the Lederer/Silberman days when 1/1 trash did not include sports)
I also want to see this card system at work at a non-HSNCT tourney...schafer you should come to...you'd appreciate the math...

Math questions or math behind the card system? I'd probably appreciate both. I don't know if I'll be in town that weekend, though.Notjustolddeadwhiteguys wrote:Hey, I might just have to come and moderate for the tournament name (I assume this means we're past the Lederer/Silberman days when 1/1 trash did not include sports)

and to point out that we did have a problem getting enough mods for our last tournament, so we would appreciate any and all who could come do that.

If Perry Hall were to go, I would volunteer my services as a reader (since I'm on college winter break), though I would ask to stay with Perry Hall as much as possible if that is possible (naturally, I would like to see the team and my brother play). Perry Hall SHOULD go; whether they do is another story.
This is unrelated to the tournament, but I figured that the TJ team members would read this thread, so it would be appropriate to post it here.
You left your buzzers at Harvard. I have tried e-mailing Billy and Naren, but both e-mails bounced back. How would you like us to get your buzzers back to you?

Breakfast will consist, as per tradition, of an absurd number of Dunkin' Donuts. Good stuff.
Also, the card system. We will (affirmative this time, instead of just "probably") use it.

yeah we Housh kids are so cool that we only have 14 teams signed up for a field of 48, this being approximately a month before the tournament. Promotion is definitely our bag.
So please sign up for the Housh Classic '08 -- you won't regret it. Well at least not at this juncture.
I didn't notice this but the 3 primary posters from TJIA 07-08 all have different sports SUPERSTARS as their avatars -- Mohit's got Chone, Felix has #32 my man Maurice JONES-DREW, and I've got Pops "King Father Thursday Born Three Whale" Mensah-Bonsu. Three pinnacles of excellence in their respective sports.

When Perry Hall signs up, could you let me know ([email protected] or a Field Update work), since I offered my services above as moderator provided PH goes? I know they are interested based on e-mail chatter, but, for some reason, organization and signing up more than a week before a tournament are not their proverbial cup of tea. I'll get them on that!

And I'm kind of curious why your moderating depends solely on Perry Hall's attendance.

Well, I went to Perry Hall. My brother's on the team. I would like to see the team play. So I will attend the tournament if Perry Hall plays. If I attend and they need moderators, I would like to moderate since I enjoy moderating. And I'm kind of curious why your moderating depends solely on Perry Hall's attendance.
PH is about 1.5 hours outside TJ, and since I would be enjoying my long Winter Break, I really wouldn't go unless Perry Hall goes (no offense to TJ). But if they do go, I'll be 0 hours outside TJ, so I might as well help out if needed since I kind of like this sort of thing. In case you are thinking this would present a conflict of interest, I guarantee it will not, as it was not at all an issue at Maryland this year and I do have integrity. I just would like to see PH play since I rarely get a chance to in college, and I would also like to help out.
I understand that team's like to know how many moderators they'll have in advance, so I'll make sure Perry Hall signs up ASAP. Perry Hall SHOULD attend, but, for some reason, signing up early is not something the current team does.
We understand (we have the same problem all the time) and we very much appreciate your offer; we'll probably take you up on it depending on how many moderators we have by New Year's.
Also, like Felix said, if Jacob hasn't sent out invitations yet, please reply to this post and I'll send out a general invitation email.

TJ Hooker better than TJ Housh...
There may be teams from faraway, exotic Loudoun County interested in playing in this tournament...more to come in the next few days.
I sent out our tournament announcement on December 3...if you didn't get it, just email me at [email protected] so I can send you an invitation.
The field is being capped at 48 teams this time, so the earlier you register the more likely your team(s) will be to get a spot.

We now have 38 teams signed up. This means we need 10 more teams in order to use the card system thing. If we don't get 10 more we'll probably go to some sort of bracket system. So if you've expressed interest please sign up and if you haven't then think about signing up.

If you still only have 38 teams by this weekend, our coach has created card system schedules that go up to that number right hereDiet Chuck wrote:We now have 38 teams signed up.
