A reassessment:
On reflecting on my earlier comments about the best player, I believe that I may have been somewhat mistaken. After seeing Shantanu play at his full power, laying down 9 powers in one round, I have come to think that it is likely that he may be the best high school player out there. Dallas Simmons, while an excellent player, does not seem to have shown the same level of improvement from last year, and I have not seen him play on that level recently. I also imagine that Charlie Dees, who seems to frequently be going to collegiate tournaments may also approach something like Shantanu-ish ability.

Due to my incredibly limited interaction with the national circuit, I can only speak for the SoCal circuit. In that circuit, the best player I have possibly seen is Jeffrey from Rancho Bernardo. It's true that RB isn't as highly ranked as SaMo is, but the knowledge on the SaMo team is pretty evenly distributed among Ilan and Evan, while Jeffrey can rack up pretty amazing ppgs by being a general knowledge guy. I guess I've noticed that he's somewhat weaker on science, however.

Although that's not to say that he's the best player nationally (by no means true); I've heard that Charlie Dees and Dallas Simons are pretty scary.

Honestly the best player out there is Guy Tabachinik, Dallas is a great player but does not have much more potential left and is somewhat inconsistent

I don't think that Guy is better than Charlie Dees is-- he doesn't play in as many collegiate tournaments, and the last time they played against one another, Charlie did better both in wins and individual scoring.

Yeah, seriously. Charlie, Dallas, and Shantanu are all better than I am, for starters.

Granted, the last time Charlie and I played in the same tournament was at HSNCT last year, but on the godawful set used at Temple (IS-72 I think) Charlie put up more powers than I did with his teammates scoring more behind him than mine did.

Of course, I would love to go to more college tournaments (any, really), but I've had some issues with that. I should be at CO this year and several events next year, though.

I don't actually play in many college tournaments, mostly due to how hard it can be to get to them from Kansas City/wherever I happen to be. To date, I've only played at Chicago Open 2007 and it's side tournaments, MLK 2008, and Fake ICT where I got to ride some serious coattails.

That's still more than most of even the best high school students. It seems as though you do more writing than most of us as well.

Charlie Dees' posts per day: 2.13
Your posts per day: 1.93

Probably not enough of a disparity to warrant a rolleyes. Besides, Charlie's signal-to-being-Charlie-Dees ratio is steadily improving.

Umm... Charlie usually makes good posts (if occasionally too rage filled), we want people to make good posts and people shouldn't tell others to not make posts unless they're notably ungood at it (like, stupid lawsuit threatening ungood)?

I thought the rule was if a thread isn't locked it's fair game for posting.

Nothing against Shantanu, but for a general player, I would without hesitation choose Charlie Dees or Dalles Simmons.

Edit: forgot to put Kurtis Droge in there- 44 powers? amazing. 66 normal tossups? absolute beast. shame he didn't go to PACE.
