We're a little overdue on this, but oh well.

Please include, at the minimum, the team's state. I would like it if you included their city as well. You can vote for B-teams; please indicate their B-teamed-ness in your ballot.

Please utilize this website's results area and state quizbowl sites to look into areas you are not familiar with. Many active areas have discussion threads on this site as well; look at those too. Also, check the AIQuizbowl Ratings (linked below). They're lagging some on being updated, but it's still a good result.

I reserve the right to reject ballots if they appear biased. I will e-mail you for justification of your ballot before I do this, but still, if you have five or more teams from a region that doesn't have that many top quality teams, I'll question your ballot. If I do this, don't take it as some personal affront - deviating from the mean is not a bad thing if your thoughts behind doing so are decently formed.

Also, use this thread for discussion purposes. If you have a question about a team(s) you haven't had the opportunity to see, ask here! I'm certain someone will be able and very willing to address your questions.

I'll let voting go for at least two weeks. If more time is needed, I will extend the deadline.

You can e-mail your ballot to me at fredmorlan aaaaaaaaaaat gmail daaaaaaaawt com

Include in the subject "poll" so my Gmail will filter it and star it for my attention. If you don't do this, I will be sad.

I'd love to see us reach 25 ballots on this poll. And hey, maybe this time mine won't be the super crazy one.

Speaking of Byko's ratings, can anyone provide additional information about Wheaton North, East Lansing, Savannah, and Saint Johns (TX)? Currently they are listed as having zero losses in Byko-included tournaments. Do you know of any losses in non-listed tournaments, and if so to whom?

I'd like info on those teams and:

Code: Select all

Parkview (AR)
Santa Monica (CA)
Mission San Jose (CA)
Florida High (... FL)
South Fork (FL)
Taylor County (FL)
Ames (IA)
Eisenhower (IL)
Washington (IN)
Actually, pretty much the entire state of Indiana
Novi (MI)
North Carolina Science & Math
Schuylerville (NY)
Findlay (OH)
Columbus Academy (OH)
Booker T Washington (OK)
Edmond Santa Fe (OK)
Lisgar (Ontario)
Rice Memorial (VT)
General discussion will be appreciated as well, of course.

I don't think any WV teams are deserving of being ranked at this point.

I am fairly sure that East Lansing has not lost yet this season. However, they have not had the opportunity to play any highly ranked teams other than DCC, who they have beaten three or so times. The team is mostly Kurtis, with other players buzzing in to get a couple questions a game, from what I can tell. Kurtis is better than last year, especially on Lit questions, but it's hard to tell how good a team is that has only had one close game all year.

Note: I went to EL, so I am trying not to include any biased opinions. I watched then play a few games at the Autumn Classic and have seen the two QuizBusters games that have aired (those are online, if anyone cares: http://wkar.org/quizbusters/page.php?fi ... &season=19 ).

EDIT: The games against DCC not at the Autumn Classic were on bad questions, and I think DCC was without their full team.

Besides their one tournament in the ratings, Lisgar will have only competed in one other tournament before the deadline of this poll: they went 6-2 for third place (without their top scorer) at a Reach tournament in December.

My guess is that Wheaton North's record is actually about 50-0 right now. All of the tournaments they have played have been in Illinois format, which helps them due to their math strength, but they have faced the top teams in Illinois and have generally played on good Illinois format questions. (That is, questions written by Aegis, NAQT, some house-written, and, perhaps, Byko's company.) Their team last year finished 6-4 the first day and 1-2 the second day at HSNCT and was pretty much (perhaps entirely) juniors. I don't know if they will go to any national tournaments this year, however. Though math is their biggest strength, they are about even with the top Illinois teams in other areas. The only close match they played that I know of was in the New Trier Final against Auburn, and they had already beaten Auburn handily that day.

I don't see any reason to rank Eisenhower. The two matches they have listed in Byko's ratings are both wins over an above average team, but they have not placed in any tournament in Illinois, either because they have not entered or they have lost, I don't know which. They probably are a good team, but I don't have any reason to believe that they are one of the top 25 teams in the country.

1. Confirm that WN won on Bykowski's questions - at Fremd.

2. Having moderated for a few Indiana teams at Culver a week or so ago, I can say that St. Joseph's has a strong individual player and, with the exception of Harrison A pretty much romped on the way (I did not see the game, nor do I know the score - it might also have been a romp) to second place behind DCC. I'd say that, on the whole, no Indiana teams are likely to be put on a national poll because every single team (save Culver) said that NAQT was their second format after :chip: and each team (outside of St. Joe's and the one game I saw of Culver) made simple mistakes - on an A-level set - indicative of not being used to NAQT. If I had seen more than just Illinois to feel good about doing a national poll myself, I'd feel justified putting St. Joseph's in at 24 or 25 based on just the Culver tournament, but not much higher. Harrison will likely play well at :chip: and not very well elsewhere, like the past. I didn't see enough of Culver A to judge them.

Findlay:
I only saw Findlay at one tournament (BRAVE Falcon at BGSU), but I saw them play like 6 games. They're not quite a top tier team in the state of Ohio yet, but I thought they were pretty solid overall. They did beat Copley twice, DCC B twice, and Tippecanoe twice (granted, Copley and Tipp are having down years; I don't know about DCC B), and only lost to Garfield Heights on the last question of their match. I must add that this was on an NAQT A-set, so I don't know what you should take away from that.

Columbus Academy:
Haven't seen them personally. I've heard they're pretty good and they should be - they got Kirun back - but Greg, Brian, or Justin might be able to give you more info on them if they see this thread. Just from what I've read on the Ohio forum, I can tell you that at Tippecanoe's tournament they beat Walnut Hills, which is a pretty solid victory in my book, as WH is one of the best teams in Ohio.

Santa Monica:

They are the dominant team in SoCal, and I suspect in all of Cal, from what I've seen of the scores that Mission San Jose, Bentley, and Harker have put up on Byko. However, they are less potent than last year, having lost two starters and the two people who've replaced them are not as good. Still though, they should definitely be on top 25.

Illinois input:

New Trier's a bit high in that, if you ask me. I mean, if they go to HSNCT, they'll probably go 6-4, but this year's team is not as good as last year's - I'd put them #20 at the highest.

And Rockford Auburn probably belongs somewhere on the bottom of your poll... yes, they neg, but they do occasionally get tossups as well. Just occasionally.

General discussion will be appreciated as well, of course.

I don't think any WV teams are deserving of being ranked at this point.
Here's a little bit of what I know that isn't included:

- Saint John's (TX) lost sometime in the playoffs in the TQBA Houston tournament, so they aren't actually undefeated, but I don't have any decisive data on when they lost or to whom.
- Florida (FL) also lost in playoffs at both the Florida State and U. Florida tournaments, but again, I don't know when or to whom.
- Washington (IN) is probably ranked highly because they won the regular season of the Saint Joseph Valley League, which includes Saint Joseph's, who has won some good games out of conference and out of state. To my knowledge, Washington isn't competing anywhere else.
- For good information on Indiana, check out http://www.inqblots.org, which has about all the info that I have. Ben Dillon at Saint Joseph's does a good job updating that and keeping me updated as well, even if I fall behind (as I have lately).
- Schuylerville (NY) competes in some sort of tournament/league that's run by a local newspaper. They use Chip Beall questions.
- All the Vermont data you can handle is on http://www.scholarsbowl.org...or at least all I have and all of their info on the road to their state championship.

Hope that all proves helpful. I'm happy to receive any more data on teams that there are questions about, even if it may take me until the end of February to catch up. Not having internet at home until Feb. 12 will kind of set things back a bit.

Not that these schools should make anyone's top 25, but...

I did notice that a Harrisburg station is posting its TV bracket this year:

http://www.wgal.com/download/2007/1101/14478210.pdf

I don't know the format, but I suspect its Chip-ish. Manheim Township usually does respectably well when it ventures into NAQT-land.

I believe there's also a show in the Allentown area, which I actually saw on my dial one weekend. When the two teams didn't know the author of some endlessly-asked work, I turned it. Maybe Moravian can commentate.

And to mildly refute Henry's ballot, I think Stuyvesant (with Doug), State College, and Charter are even closer than that. The three have a circle-of-death going for the year. SC beat Stuy, who beat Charter (twice), who beat SC (twice, once in OT).

Savannah, MO is easily the second best team in Missouri. They aren't anywhere near one of the best teams in the nation. They rarely travel outside Missouri and when they do the results aren't favorable (5-5 in last years HSNCT). They are only ranked that high because they beat us (NKC) in a controversial manner on a weird Missouri set.

Ohio feedback:

We have yet to figure out if the state is down as a whole this year, or if there is just a ton of parity... but if you're looking at the best teams...

1. Walnut Hills
2. Garfield Heights
3. Columbus Academy
4. Ottawa Hills
5. Fisher Catholic

(We dropped from most polls b/c we aren't in the mid-atlantic and haven't travelled nearly as much, so our highest profile opponent this year thus far has been DCC and they've beaten us all 3 times we've played them)

In terms of any of these teams being nationally-ranked... only WH and GH would deserve it and neither of us have played anyone yet. Columbus Academy has one great player. Unfortunately, the only teams that do a lot of travelling in Ohio are us and Tipp, and we haven't gotten out yet to VA... although the team is coming to DACQ... so we'll see how they hold up there.

There's no way Dorman B should be ranked below Chattahoochee A. They have beaten us 4 times straight, and the last 2 were HUGE blowouts (at Robinson). They've improved greatly over the past few months (we beat them twice at the beginning of the year) and are definitely among the top 10 in my opinion.

Santa Monica did not show up to either of the winter tournaments so far, so there's no more data on them even if Byko were to somehow find game-by-game results from those tournaments. Rancho Bernardo never plays their A team together and having beaten Santa Monica once without Jeff I have a suspicion they would be fairly competitive against SaMo with a full A team. Based on what I've seen so far, SaMo, RB, and Arcadia should make the playoffs at HSNCT and have a chance to do some damage there, but only SaMo should be getting any consideration in a top 25 poll.

Wheaton North should be above DCC

We've only played two teams deserving of a Top 25 spot: Wheaton North and DCC. I think Byko's ratings are right on choosing between them: Wheaton North is stronger than DCC, in my mind. I think Wheaton North is quicker, and their bonus conversion is just as good as DCC's.

We played DCC twice this year and there was at least a semblance of a chance of staying close for us. Wheaton North was pretty much a beatdown the whole way, even though we played pretty well against them.

P.S.: I don't any team in Indiana should be in the Top 25. St. Joe's would be my pick, if any, but they don't have any wins against a Byko Top 100 team. And Washington's only win against a Byko Top 100 team is one win against St. Joe's...

P.S. Fred, call Wheaton North... "Wheaton North". Wheaton refers to a team that is, well, at least 5 PPG worse.

Chiming in on the Indiana ratings:

My team, St. Joseph's, is something like 36-5 now, but with only a few games against out-of-state competition, we don't rate a top 25 mention. (On NAQT format, I'd guess us to be the best team in the state.)

Culver, however, has several games outside the state, so they can be judged a bit more impartially. I'd guess Harrison to be about equal to Culver this year.

Of the rest: #1 Washington is a one-man team (granted, the one man is FANTASTIC), but DCC would wipe them out as they did us a few weeks ago. Others (e.g. Penn, Fishers, Center Grove) are worth watching, but they rarely play tournaments.

They have a team that is good, but inconsistent. My A team got nicked by them in the finals at UNC back in October, and they lost in the finals at Saint Mary's last weekend (beating Raleigh Charter A in the semifinals both times). Then, when they came to the Speedway Shootout at Robinson in October they couldn't even make the quarterfinals. If you can catch them on a humanities-heavy packet, they're pretty easily had.

Since we at Moravian compete in only a handful of tournaments each year (and mostly during the second semester), it's understandable that we're usually overlooked in these rankings. But considering that so far we've come within one tossup of beating both Dorman and Wilmington Charter A at Harvard and Kellenberg, respectively, I'd make the *biased* case for including Moravian in your predictions for the NAQT HSNCT. Unfortunately, we won't be able to attend PACE NSC this year because it conflicts with graduation, where my absence would be noticed in a class of, uh, 65 or so.

And please don't get me started about Scholastic Scrimmage, Mr. Tressler...

I'm going to echo what Ben said except we play a ton of tournaments, mostly local... with the exception of DCC and Russell, we haven't seen any other powerhouse teams yet this year outside of Ohio. The team will be at WoQ though, so it should be a good gauge of how far along we are and how we might do at HSNCT.

Florida here:

I'm from the South Fork quiz bowl team.

Once again, it seems like the caliber of Florida quizbowl teams falls behind that of the Chesapeake and North East region teams.

If I recall, some of the better teams are Rickards, Pensacola, Taylor, Florida High, and Ransom Everglades. Our only high-school level loss this year has come at the hands of Florida High during the UF Winter tournament, and I believe they lost to either Pensacola or Rickards after us.

I'm not quite sure if any of the Florida teams would rank in the top 25.

Anyone who ranked Tagalongs above Samoas clearly didn't do enough research; just off hand, I can think of three or four weekends when Samoas consistently got 5 PPB better than Tagalongs.

I think you're vastly underestimating Tagalong's performance. Granted, no one part of the Tagalong team quite matches up to that of caramel for Samoa A, but when one considers the combined accomplishments of chocolate, peanut butter and cookie for Tagalong, I believe one would be hard pressed to deny that the comparison between these two teams of deliciousness is a close one. Unfortunately, packaging is something of a buzzer rock for Tagalong.

Also, you graduated from the robot factory and (please don't take this as a personal attack, but just a statement of fact) as such you may not have taste buds. This would unfortunately make you biased against foodstuffs in your rankings. Of course, if you have synthesized tasting capabilities, please ignore this critique.

Look, I'm not saying Tagalongs aren't good, but it is nigh impossible to make any sort of meaningful comparison betwen them and non-Girl Scout cookies. Maybe Tagalongs are the best cookie out there, but maybe they are merely a very strong cookie beating up on sub-par Girl Scout competition. Until they go out and play Famous Amos or even Chips Ahoy! level opponents, you just can't say with any degree of certainty.

It is even tougher to figure out what to do with Thin Mints. They've finished second to Tagalongs in every competiton, yet they've clearly distinguished themselves from the rest of the Girl Scout pack. I can't begin to decide what this says about them until they get some matches against non-Girl Scout competition.

I guess on March 15, we'll finally start to get some answers.

Not a personal attack at all; I have grown to accept the limitations of my robot-factory education. I have upgraded to have some flavor detection mechanisms, but I suspect they are far less discerning that most non-robot observers. However, I think my lack of "true" taste buds gives me a good perspective on this comparison; those with taste buds might be too close to each of the sides in this debate to give a truly unbiased opinion of the teams.

My main concern with Tagalong is how much of a subject overlap they have; chocolate and peanut butter seem to cover a lot of the same flavor-related areas, and there is nobody on Tagalong that can even approach the textural strength of Samoa's coconut. On the other hand, Samoa does seem to have a lot of holes in its subject coverage, especially at the core of the usual distributions.

Regarding Thin Mints: The key here seems to be how the difficulty jump will affect them at nationals. When they start getting matched up against the strong sides on tougher questions, I think we might see them crumble.
