Is Virginia NAQT States still on??

Post by STPickrell »

It being two weeks before the tournament, and knowing that many of the usual suspects to attend tournaments in Virginia use this board, I figured this was an apropos question to ask. Now, maybe I've just been left out of the loop but there did seem to be some uncertainty in the RichMo thread as to whether this was 100% on.

I got an e-mail with an invite to NAQT States. It seems like it is still on for the 19th, although there hasn't been an notification on hsquizbowl. Here's the link they provided for us in the letter though: http://www.student.virginia.edu/~quizbowl/register/

It's still on. We're in the process of recruiting some additional staff at the moment. Sorry, most of the team officers at UVA don't even check this forum, and I (basically retired from competition) am the only student that posts here. I'll talk to Tim tomorrow and poke him into dropping some confirmations here.

Yes, I can confirm that the NAQT All-Virginia Competition is still on for April 19 in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia. The registration deadline is April 14, and you may register online at http://www.student.virginia.edu/~quizbowl/register/. If you have any questions, please e-mail [email protected].

We are also still seeking volunteers to help us run the tournament. If you are planning to be or can be in Charlottesville on April 19 and are interested in helping in return for a free lunch and our unending gratitude, please contact us at the e-mail address given above.

OK. With less than a week left, who's going to this thing? Is there a field update anywhere?

Rapp is going, although we are scrambling to get a team together. Is Cave Spring signed up for the small school division, assuming there is one?

Auburn is not going... I have birthday party plans for my daughter at my wife's parents. Auburn is planning to go to VCU on May 3.

I got two teams going. I guess if there's a small schools division, we'd sign up for it. However, I'm thinking there isn't going to be one this time around. It's always been small and if Auburn isn't in, that makes that field even smaller. Are you guys trying out for small schools div, pretzeldude?

Yeah, Rapp Co. wishes to be placed in the small school division, but unless other schools like St. Christopher's, Eastern Montgomery, etc. sign up, there won't be one, which is unfortunate. It is certainly harder for small schools to hang with the big dawgs, but that occurs, oh well. I guess a three team small school division wouldn't be that fun.

Yea, TJ is sending 5. I registered on April 5th. Man, we are finally on top of things lol.

I like the email notification idea, but I think that + a thread here for any questions would be even better. Just a suggestion for next year's UVA tournaments. Also, that way teams that aren't usually on the invitation list can hear about it if they traverse the forums.

In case anyone's wondering, Maggie Walker A defeated TJ A in the one game finals.

If TJ A was near full-power, this win is extremely impressive for Gov. It seems like they have come a long way since a somewhat slow start earlier in the year. Congrats.

Gov was absolutely impressive today. Congratulations to them on a well-earned win!
Now, on the other hand, we have our good man Keshav Pillai who was off in sunny Nashville learning the ways of college. So we were not at full-strength, no...

TJ A was plenty strong for sure as their preliminary stats indicate. Look at their bonus conversion, for example. I witnessed as they crushed our very good B team by over 500 points. I still cannot believe our A team was able to beat them twice. Our questions just came up in those rounds. TJ also had some untimely negs that hurt them. NAQT rounds are subject to upsets like that. TJ A will certainly be one of the favorites at both nationals this year. IMHO, nothing that happened yesterday changes that.

Hopefully, they will post the playoff results/stats soon.

I would post them if I had them, but I do not. Pretty sure that individual stats were not fully kept during playoffs, though.

What about the scores at least? Other than the top four, I do not know how the teams finished.

From what I have:

Gov A 415 - TJ C 160
TJ C 245 - Collegiate 200
TJ C 260 - Cave Spring 155
TJ B 280 - TJ C 180

But yeah, there were a lot of upsets this time around.

From what I gather, if all of my math is correct, the top 8 standings were:

1. Maggie Walker A (11-1, 7-1)
2. TJ A (10-2, 6-2)
3. Maggie Walker B (9-2, 5-2)
4. Collegiate (8-3, 4-3)
5. TJ C (7-4, 3-4)
6. TJ B (6-5, 2-5)
7. Cave Spring (5-6, 1-6)
8. Rappahannock (4-7, 1-6)

The second record is record v. playoff teams.

I think this is accurate given various results in this thread, and that we lost to Collegiate, Cave Spring, and Maggie Walker A in the playoffs, but beat TJ B by about 240-205.
