School Budget Votes = Death

Post by TheCzarMan »

I just found out tomorrow that due to our school being audited (Which blocks us from any national competitions this year) and budget concerns, if the new budget does not pass tomorrow for us then Quizbowl loses its funding at my school from what I understand. Any other public schools have important school votes coming up?

See, he wasn't asking for advice on what to do if your budget is cut, but if anyone else's budget was in peril.

I saw that as well and that is a damn shame. But as Fred said, I'm looking more for other people who have important budget votes upcoming.

I found out about 2 days ago that our money that was reserved for nationals went to pay for a bus bill that I had assurances would be paid out of our general fund... now it looks like we won't be doing nationals either. I am also anticipating a very hard hit on any funding from our board this year, I did get a small amount for the last 2 years. Now it is going to be up to my team to help me raise some funds before we can do anything next year. Transportation is what is killing our funds more than anything else.

We get no funding for anything, and it's been 5 years since my high school paid for anything for the Academic Bowl team. We have to pay our way to every tournament.

Budget vote fails for 11th year in a row.

New Jersey and voters whose property taxes are way to high already and don't want any more taxes on them FTMFW!

Some of us have been doing quiz bowl for many years without tax money being spent to finance it. Simply raise the money for as much of a program as you want, and keep it going. ALL extracurriculars where I teach (largest school district in Georgia) are paid for by non-tax sources primarily. Booster groups, dontions, fundraisers. etc.

If students and parents want a program, there are ways to finance it for sure. Tough love! :-)
