Quiz Bowl or Academic Bowl?
It appears like most of the earth calls it "Quiz Bowl" but at my high school and in many others in Delaware (and some others in the region), the term "Academic Bowl" is used much more often.
Just wanted to know what some of you used or preferred. Why one over the other?

Re: Quiz Bowl or Academic Bowl?
Quizbowl (or, I guess, quiz bowl) is the only correct answer.

Re: Quiz Bowl or Academic Bowl?
In Illinois, generally one uses Scholastic Bowl for IHSA-format high school stuff, that being its official IHSA name, and quizbowl for the more general activity (thus Scholastic Bowl is a type of quizbowl.) I suppose that a lot of people use Scholastic Bowl for everything, too.

I prefer quiz bowl, but Scholar's/Scholars' Bowl is much more common down here than the other two.

In high school (in East Tennessee), Scholars' Bowl was the name of the public television competition/show, but it was also used as a general term.AndyShootsAndyScores wrote:I prefer quiz bowl, but Scholar's/Scholars' Bowl is much more common down here than the other two.

Re: Quiz Bowl or Academic Bowl?
In Virginia, it's also called by the name of the regional competition/TV show. Scholastic Bowl is the name of VHSL activity but in some parts of the state I've asked for a Scholastic Bowl coach and gotten a blank look over the phone until I gave the more familiar name.
Northern Virginia: It's Academic
Charlottesville/Lynchburg/Roanoke: ACE (Academic Challenge for Excellence)
Eastern Virginia: Academic Challenge
Richmond: Battle of the Brains
"Academic team" also gets some recognition. Quiz bowl is becoming more recognized it seems.

If you call it anything but quiz bowl, you aren't playing quiz bowl.

Re: Quiz Bowl or Academic Bowl?
At ICT one guy on the Williams team said something about it being college bowl. I said "this isn't college bowl" and he replied "we call everything college bowl." I guess people tend to name it after the version they are most familiar with.

Quizbowl. But I'm not going to correct you if you use the term you've been using your whole life. However, I find that if you say "quizbowl", people understand exactly what you mean, no matter what they grew up with.

Re: Quiz Bowl or Academic Bowl?
"Quizbowl" is the general way that the sport is referred to nationally, especially NAQT, PACE, ACF, and regular circuit tournaments. Quiz Bowl evolved from GE College Bowl, but the name distinguishes it. Now, all of the other names typically reference specific regional TV or state league competitions.

Whatever you call it, many people outside of the circuit here think it has to do with "bowling". And in some parts, if you do not say "Scholastic Bowl" clearly and distinctlyt, they think you mean basketball (say Scholastic Bowl fast and you'll see what I mean).
My favorite term , though, is Connecticut's: "As Schools Match Wits"

Re: Quiz Bowl or Academic Bowl?
I've had numerous of my not-so-bright students ask me what Academic Bowl means, wondering aloud "is that, like, smart kids bowling?"
Calling it "Quiz Bowl" really wouldn't alleviate those problems. But Academic Team or Quiz Team seems a little better.

I think this can also be a five point penalty .... ten points if you aren't in uniform.David Riley wrote:And in some parts, if you do not say "Scholastic Bowl" clearly and distinctlyt

EGAN! You call yourself a certified moderator?!?!? Everyone knows the IHSA penalty for being out of uniform is THIRTY points! (To out-of-staters: No, really, that's in the IHSA scholastic bowl State Series rules)
That's one nuance of IHSA that I DON'T want adopted into IESA rules!
By the way, Dr. Egan, your question packet should be arriving at your home tomorrow.
