Announcement: EQUINE II (11/8/08) at Auburn HS (Riner, VA)

Post by mithokie »

This is an early date claim for November 8, 2008. The second annual Eagle QUizbowl INvitational Event will be held the 2nd Saturday in November at Auburn High School in Riner, VA. We will be using NAQT questions with untimed rounds. The question set is yet to be determined. We had a small tournament that went pretty well last year, and I am hoping for a better turn out this year by moving the date from October to November. Auburn HS is very easy to get to from Interstate 81 (Exit 114 near Blacksburg and Christiansburg) and we hope that teams will consider making the trip to Riner this fall.

Matt, I'm fairly sure Honaker will be attending this coming fall. Whether or not we'll have an 'A' and 'B' team there is beyond me. We had an even 8 last year and lost two seniors, and possibly even another player or so. However, I am confident that we'll make a return. It was a fine tourney last year, if only we weren't shut out by Cave Spring  My coach will probably be in touch with you some time after the school year starts up again.

Well, we're coming back as well. Looking forward to visiting my old stomping grounds. :P I'm thinking we can pull at least two, maybe three teams. I'll let you know when we get back into session here. It's a great tournament if you guys have never been.

Maggie Walker generally tries to attend in-state tournaments when we don't have conflicts, so we may have a few teams.

Due to an error in my reading of the Virginia Tech football schedule (I thought VT was playing in Durham on 11/22), I am announcing that we are changing the date of our tournament from 11/22 to 11/8. Mods... please adjust the topic title to reflect the date change. Much Thanks,

We have been assigned set IS-80A by NAQT. Also, I still need moderator help in updating the date in the post title.

I would imagine that Rappahannock Co. would be interested in sending at least one team. I need to talk to my coach next week about our schedule this year though.

Snail mail invitations went out Tuesday and should be arriving at schools very soon if they have not arrived yet. I wanted to remind everyone that the early registration deadline is Monday 10/27/08. If you want the $10 discount make sure you send me a registration form by then. A check can be sent with the form, or hand delivered on the morning of the tournament.

Registration will run from 8:30 until 9:00 AM. We aim to start the first matches at approximately 9:15 AM. Concessions will be sold on site for lunch. I do not have the complete details on an ending time, but the scenarios I have imagined have us done by 4:00 PM. I will send all coaches more information about the tournament schedule when I have a final number of teams.

Final Results...

Stats themselves will be posted Monday. Apparently, I left the score sheet for the final match at school.

Affirmed Bracket
18th: Saint Stephens (1-8)
17th: Cave Spring C (1-8)
16th: Winfield B (3-6)
15th: Bassett B (3-6)
14th: Rappahannock County B (4-5)
13th: Bluefield (4-5)

Barbaro Bracket
12th: Cave Spring B (2-7)
11th: Eastern Montgomery (3-6)
10th: E.C. Glass (4-5)
9th: Bassett A (5-4)
8th: Auburn (6-3)
7th: Winfield A (8-1)

Man O'War Bracket
6th: Blacksburg (3-6)
5th: Honaker (6-3)
4th: Rappahannock County A (6-3)
Tied 2nd: Collegiate (7-2)
Tied 2nd: Robinson (7-2)
1st: Cave Spring (8-1) **only loss was 1st match of day against Winfield A

Round 10:
Collegiate played Robinson
Robinson 285 Collegiate 250 *** Collegiate Awarded 3rd place

Round 11:
Cave Spring defeated Robinson *** Cave Spring 1st Place

HSNCT bids should go out to top 3 Cave Spring, Robinson, and Collegiate
as well as the top small school award which goes to Rappahannock County A.

I also applied for affiliation with PACE, but have not heard back from them yet, so there may end up being some PACE NSC bids as well.

Thanks to Auburn and Mr. Beeken for a well-run tournament. Everything was smooth if I remember correctly. I was excited to finish fourth and was really excited to be highest individual scorer.

But I was really excited that my little 7th grade brother finished 29/77 in scoring after prelims.

I would like to echo A.J.'s sentiments. The tournament ran smoothly, especially considering one team got lost. We had a great time, despite getting destroyed in the later part of the day. We sort of got an idea of where we are and what we need to work on. I would like to thank Mr. Beeken and Auburn for all of this.

I have no complaints besides the well documented ones about the set. Losing to Collegiate on the final tossup of computational math, along with a number of swept trash bonuses, was especially hard to swallow.

Glancing at the stats, I specifically recall powering a question against Honaker. Minor matter though.

I think the team liked, or was at least okay with, the pyramidality and format so we may make it to a few more tournaments this year and next.

I think Blacksburg kind of got lucky/unlucky, depending on your point of view, in finishing second in your AM bracket, since it guaranteed you a top 6 finish, but put you up against 4 tough opponents after lunch. In a similar way Winfield A got stuck in the 7-12 bracket by virtue of their losing the circle of death Tie Break. They breezed through their 4 after lunch rounds. If Blacksburg does get more involved in the weekend circuit, I think you will find the VHSL series to be easier in comparison, especially when you play the teams that are not involved in the circuit. The more experiences you have playing against teams with buzzers in your hands the better. The more you do it on questions that you teach you something, then you get even more benefit. I would not say that A-series questions teach you nothing, but the other longer, more clue dense questions teach you more. We tried to get a regular IS set, but were not given one. I hope we see you at Cave Spring in December.

All in all, a great tournament once again. I'm glad this tournament is growing and things ran very smoothly. Mad props to Matt for hosting the tournament. I think the packets were weird in a lot of ways but that's NAQT for you.

John - You have a good team there and we're looking forward to VHSL District/Regional play with you all. Matt is also right. The more invitationals you attend, the better practice it is for your team. I would like to see Blacksburg, as well as other teams in the area, to start coming out and demonstrating their talent beyond VHSL play. And to do some blatant advertising, a great place to get some practice would be the CSI. :P

A.J. - Good gravy. 136 PPG. Insane... and his brother is on the way up. Wow.

Thanks to Auburn and their coaches, I thought it was a very smooth and well-run tournament, especially for one thats only been around for two years.

I also liked the horse themes and the horse shoes for neg awards. It was fun :)

Now I'm gonna shamelessly advertise and suggest that you all come to the CSI here in Roanoke in December :p

I'll also chime in to agree that Matt & company did a great job with this tournament! We really enjoyed it... weird NAQT question distributions notwithstanding.

I especially liked the re-bracketed, round-robin playoffs, even though it meant we got stomped by Cave Spring A *twice* rather than just once. :-/ Nice team you've got there, Bob! Ditto to Collegiate, Rapp A, & Honaker (...and apparently Winfield A also, even though we never got to play them). All of those teams could have just as easily finished 2nd instead of us.
