Since no know has mentioned it yet (and since I have to catch an early plane tomorrow), I just thought I'd wish all the Illinois teams competing at PACE this weekend the best of luck! Despite whatever setbacks and problems we might have in IL quizbowl, I think we can still take comfort and pride in the fact that we have some outstanding players worthy of competition at the national level.

If you see me at George Mason, say hello.

So, through 6 of 7 prelim rounds at PACE, Auburn, Carbondale, and New Trier are all 5-1, each playing a match against another 5-1 team (James Monroe, TJ A, and Chaska, respectively), winner makes the playoffs. We could have 3 IL teams in the top bracket, folks.

Yeah, first consolation is quite good, especially given how many good teams there are this year.

I just spent the day cleaning out the Scholastic Bowl cabinet in my room at Fenton and it has put me in a reflective mood. Why, you ask? Because I came across a binder full of old questions sets and it reminded me just how far Illinois quizbowl has come in the past 20 years, what with IL teams having their best year at nationals to date (not counting Panasonic). I can't attest to the authorship of these questions (no vendor is listed), but apparently they were used in a tournament at Niles North. I can't be certain of their age either, but other packets in the binder were from 1988-91, so I'm guessing these are of the same vintage. Enjoy what formerly passed for quizbowl in the Land of Lincoln!
