Re: Bad Negs Again
Not a neg, but still kind of painful when it happened.
At practice, one of our players answered Sudan, and got power on it. Then he said:
"I knew it was Sudan because I knew it had to be in the Middle East."
Mind you, his definition of Middle East is the normal definition, he just thought that Sudan was in Asia.

During county play, last question out of 25 tossups:
This woman, who was born in 1891, was the first lady (buzz)
My guess: Jacqueline Kennedy
Answer: Onassis
Almost: what N university had "Win one for the Gipper", team was going to say Northwestern , but pulled out Notre Dame at last second.

I would not look too much into, Ian. The person who got the neg was rather green, since he has only been coming to practice for a few weeks or so. Also, he buzzed in/around the first line, I think, so he did not have much to go off of, so there was likely not much to justify his answer (almost certainly not, in fact). That was my tossup... Where was the neg? What clue was it on?

Since the WoQ mirror has finally passed, I am free to post this one, probably the best neg I've been present for all year.
Given: Bilbo Baggins's Birthday Party
Correct: Field of the Golden Cloth
Off the opening clue "Fireworks in the shape of a dragon distracted participants at this event."
The worst part about the whole thing is that, when my teammate buzzed, his answer was completely correct. Still, there was solid laughter in the room for about a minute afterward.

Off the opening clue "Fireworks in the shape of a dragon distracted participants at this event."
The worst part about the whole thing is that, when my teammate buzzed, his answer was completely correct. Still, there was solid laughter in the room for about a minute afterward.
Well, the actual text is:ihavenoidea wrote:He should have protested.
So either you buzz before the word procession and you're only buzzing off of fireworks forming a dragon, which could happen at any really big fireworks show, or you hear the word procession and must ignore that in order to answer with the Lord of the Rings answer...WoQ wrote:During this event, an incident involving fireworks forming a dragon temporarily stopped the procession which was followed by a sermon delivered by Richard Pace.

Re: Bad Negs Again
I mean, it seems fairly reasonable to buzz in before the word "procession" (I certainly would have). I probably would have weighed whether it was crazier to have a tossup on Bilbo's party, or to have a tossup on the Field of the Cloth of Gold at a high school tournament. I think I would have negged with Bilbo. In any case, it's amusing but hardly a bad neg. Consequently, I recommend that tossup author George Stevens switches from being a history player to being a lord of the rings player.

I'll admit, the tossup was probably too difficult, but I certainly heard a few tossups on it as high schooler (including a memorable buzz of mine which won the game at some tournament at Vandy).DumbJaques wrote:I mean, it seems fairly reasonable to buzz in before the word "procession" (I certainly would have). Re: Bad Negs Again
Great--I just wanted to make sure it was from a set that was cleared for discussion. For future reference, please make sure to say what set each bad neg is from (per the first post in this thread) to avoid terrifying board staff who fear you might be posting uncleared answers.Tower Monarch wrote:I would assume it was:myamphigory wrote:Hey--what set are these from?GlitchYC wrote:'“filioque” clause of the Nicene Creed is often regarded-'

Not exactly a neg, but worth sharing...
(during a bonus discussion at practice using the St. Viator MS Tourney packets)
part C. Xylophones, drums, and even pianos belong to this family because they produce sound when they are struck with a tool, such as a stick or mallet
Player K (rookie): Part C is woodwinds.
Player C (3-year vet): What?
Player K: No, a teacher in elementary school told us! They're made of wood and..
Player C (exasperated): K! YOU DON'T BLOW INTO A PIANO!
Player K: Yeah, but...
But it was too late. The room broke down into laughter and I had to leave the room to compose myself.
Player K hereby no longer gets to razz the teammate who negged on the river that flows through London with "English Channel."
