I have to give some props to Seth Teitler as reader, who didn't bat an eye instead of doing what I would do as reader and collapse into hapless laughter. Obviously, I should have said the last name, but I was concentrating so much on pulling the dude's name that I was like, "Patrick...Roy, that's it. That sounds right."

This should also be a good example to reiterate the lesson to only give the last name at first. Even if you get prompted, you get extra time to think of the first name, and if you're not prompted you avoid possibly embarrassing negs like this one.

This is more of bad conferring than a bad neg, but still worth it.

this being a few questions after a question about glasnost. We couldn't do anything for 5 minutes after cause everyone was laughing.

Question: In 515 (or something) the Emperor Justinian issued this
Teammate Buzzes: Nika Revolt
I zoned out after that, but it involved something being issued, not the revolt. It isn't as bad as some of the other ones, but it was a horrible buzz.

Other buzzes from this teammate:
This Civil War battle
Buzz: Fredericksburg
Answer: This one has actually happened multiple times. He is a Civil War buff and he gets a little excited when he hears those two magical words.

Noted Chris Ray me not only didn't get this tossup, but still has not seen the photo (although I have seen, and heartily approve of, some of Evan's photoshops setting me against the background of batman or 9/11).

I once again reiterate that lots of these things don't count as bad negs. Even the Oath of the Horatii buzz probably wasn't that bad - Charles Meigs's tossup on the Nude Picture of Vanessa Hudgens induced Venus of Urbino/Olympia negs in at least 3 rooms at Penn Bowl 08.

Yeah. I moderated that round. For whatever reason, that question made me laugh uncontrollably. I don't even think Mike Bentley gave the correct answer, but I accepted it anyway. I still feel bad about not throwing that one out; my horrible moderating combined with the unfair fact that Chris Ray's team was playing in the match made it really unfair to the Penn team. Of course, I had never encountered a similar situation before or since. They funny thing is that I have a personal peeve against moderators foreshadowing answers with commentary or reactions before the questions are finished. It's something I try never to do. Anyway, a definite lapse on my part that can be heard here.

On some NAQT A-set packet:

Given: Tropic of Cancer
Answer: Chile

After clues like "it is X number of miles wide at its widest" and naming some cities.

On a related note, in one of my freshman World History classes this year, in the first week of school as we were reviewing geography/map terms, one of my kids asked me how wide the Equator was. It actually led to an interesting discussion.
