This sounds really cool, but I wonder how you are able to do this for free. Is NAQT brokering some deal for new teams/tournaments?

It sure would be swell to see Wofford at some more college tournaments.

The College was kind enough to give us some cash to throw this thing. We get to have a (hopefully, really good) tournament, the College gets really good high school students onto our beautiful campus. It's a win-win.

I honestly don't understand why more schools like Wofford (good enough to challenge top tier students academically, but often overlooked) don't see the benefits of hosting free tourneys.catheyme wrote:The College was kind enough to give us some cash to throw this thing. Rabun Gap Nacoochee School may debut at this event. We won't know for sure until the kids actually get on campus in another couple weeks.

Hey Guys,
We just got back from Wofford. Southside High defeated James Island in the finals to win the Tournament.

Re: Wofford College (SC) Tournament 9/27
This tournament was a very good warm-up for many teams from around the Carolinas, as it ended with a great final match between James Island and Southside (a rematch of last year's NAQT state final) . They were without two of our top four players, and freshmen were put in their place. It ended up as a close win in the finals, which strangely, depended on their top player, Travis, not saying an answer in time or not.
They thought it wasn't in time. Later, after a protest was pushed, they gave JI 30 points, as a tie-breaker bonus ended up being played after the last question. It happened to be hard stuff, which James Island didn't really get, and Southside ended up winning by one question.
James Island did beat Southside, however, in the preliminary rounds, 390-175.
Watch out, all Southeastern teams, for Southside. They have a good math player, which is a big help in this part of the country, but they have work on social studies and history.
Irmo, also, has gotten much better, averaging almost 400 points a game, only allowing 110. They will be a good team in South Carolina this year, and maybe will even upset some people at tournaments like Brookwood.
