I wouldn't be surprised if some teams that went last year don't go this year.

They're generally set up into the evening on Friday...I want to say 9, 10pm at least? And then I think you can register before the opening meeting on Saturday if need be.

I bet he means "date." Since we're talking about who hasn't registered at all yet.

A new school from Morganton, NC, Patton, in its 2nd year of operation, has qualified for the HSNCT. They need donations of money to go.

Here is an article about it, and a way to support their cause:

Pish, we need hundreds of dollars too, but we never get any press about it. Hopefully they get to come.

We are in the same boat but I am hoping that we will be able to raise the money in time... this is my bunches first time playing in the tournament, so it will be a learning experience for all of us..

Are there any teams or individuals who will arrive by Thursday night that would be interested in Laser Tag? If I've mapquested correctly, it's about four miles from the hotel.

We are thinking about going, and if there is interest from another 10-15 people, I'll book the place for exclusive use for one round.

This sounds pretty cool. Is it anywhere near any of the CTA stops?

It's a short bus ride (~8 minutes on the #90 southbound) away from the Harlem stop on the Blue Line.

How far of a walk is that?

We are probably using either that option or a taxi.

It looks like it's a >30-minute walk from the Harlem station to the laser tag place. Fair warning--this route also assumes that you're walking to the Rosemont station from the hotel, which I'm not sure is entirely feasible. (The image of the walk route on Google Maps seems to indicate that you'll be walking down the on-ramps to the Kennedy, which seems...ill-advised.) If the hotel offers some sort of shuttle to public transit, you can probably do the Blue Line/#90 route to the laser tag place; otherwise, a four-mile taxi will be pretty cheap and seems like a safer bet.

Hate to go off topic too much, but when the first cards are given during the first round are they random or does NAQT consider the team's season performance?

The initial card order matters pretty minimally; similarly, they vaguely pay some attention to their impression of how teams did during the regular season (from what I've heard). It's no biggie overall.

I remember them saying at opening meetings it was mostly random but has something to do with trying to put teams from the same part of the country away from each other (at least at first) and some kind of general separation of good teams, but like everyone said, it ultimately doesn't really matter a lick, because the system tends to work itself out no matter what.

What Charlie said is dead on. However, one year Charter A played Half Hollow Hills West A in round 1. We see them about once a month, and didn't have to go to Chicago to do that.

I suspect that a minimal effort is made to separate out the 10 or so teams that NAQT thinks will probably finish high in the standings. But every year there is some early matchup between two really good teams. Dorman B and LASA A (4th and 7th overall) played in their third match last year, for example. The year before, Gov A and Dorman A (1st and 4th) played in their fourth round.

I mean, yeah, weird things happen every year. The 2006 HSNCT stats indicate a Brendan Byrne - Chris Ray showdown in Round 1. Also, remember that every year, some playoff team gets upset early and throws an entire bracket off for a few rounds.

Ultimately, it isn't going to matter. Anyone who goes 6-4 against this field deserves to be in the playoffs, regardless of what schedule they had to play to get there.

This walk is entirely feasible. I was able to check out the hotel earlier in the year and there is sidewalk going all the way from the station to the hotel. A couple of crosswalks on ramp exits but they're all marked.

How big are the rooms that we will be playing in? Rapp is bringing a large contingent (because there is honestly nothing else for people in my county to do, and Chicago is a big, pretty city somewhere over the rainbow), and we were wondering if we would be able to cram 10ish fans into a room with us.

If it is like previous years.. I don't think that a room will be able to handle that.... but with a new venue.. might not be the case..

You may have a problem in some of the rooms, but in the majority of rooms, you should be able to get 10 spectators in the room.

In the past, there have been rooms that didn't have enough space for me and two alternates. This was a real problem for us, as we often bring a significant number of parents and grandparents. Parents had to stay out in the hallway during matches.

Hey all, I'm not positive that this is the right place to go, but I'm desperate and hate navigating websites, so sorry if I bug you.

I'm the only girl on my Quiz Bowl team, and I'm having some issues with the rooming situation for this competition. School policy and other fun roadblocks have made it impossible for me to room with any of my teammates. I was wondering if there are any teams out there with a lone girl looking for a roommate? Maybe we can figure something out, if they're not opposed to fraternizing with the enemy.

Anyone interested can email me at [email protected].

Again, sorry if this is the wrong place! If there is a better topic for me to post this under, please let me know.

As someone who has coached a team in Small Schools for the past 5 years, I have a humble request. Please, don't let the Small School Playoff seem like an "afterthought" this year. I know that most schools don't care about it, but it is frustrating to the coaches - and the kids - when it seems that the small school playoffs are being run by the seat of the proverbial pants.

For example, the playoff structure for the overall championship is explicitly explained before the tournament begins. However, every year that we have been involved in the Small Schools playoff, we have had to wait around after elimination from the regular playoffs while the powers that be decide "how we are going to do this".

I understand that you don't know how many small schools will meet the 4-6 prerequisite or how many will make the overall playoffs and how far they will get. But, it shouldn't be too hard to come up with a format that can be announced beforehand. In lieu of the 4-6 record, couldn't you just take the top X number of Small Schools, regardless of record, and make a playoff based on that?

Like I said, just a small request on behalf of us lowly small school coaches and players...

I've never been to HSNCT before, but as a small school player I echo this request. Since I count 27 small schools, maybe 8 or 12 (or 16 but I guess that would be stretching it) should qualify?

In the ideal world, small schools would play each other, but that would involve actually scheduling matches ahead of time rather than using a card system. And you'd only count games where you play other small schools. Maybe there is a nice way in theory to do it.

I just worry about dividing teams up too much. Should we also split private and public schools? Parochial and secular schools? Schools between 500-2000 and schools over 2000? By region?

But yes, i can see why you might feel slighted by the afterthought that this usually ends up being, from what i've heard.

This may be a reasonable idea, however the following need to be kept in mind:
1) If you're cutting off the top X teams, you also need to include every team tied for Xth place. NAQT elimination rules apply to this as well, so teams cannot be eliminated on paper tiebreakers.
2) Teams can't play in the small-school playoffs until they are eliminated from the championship playoffs. You could schedule an 8-team DE bracket and have a perfect break into the top 8 small schools, but if one of those teams stays in the main playoffs for four rounds, you can't play the first small-school round until playoff round 5.
