Tar Heel Cup VIII (9/27/08) -- Chapel Hill, NC

Post by wwellington »

Just wanted to announce that Tar Heel Cup will officially be taking place on September 27th, 2008. We should be using the first HSAPQ ACF-format set. Details about format will be finalized once we have a more exact number of teams, but prelims will be a round robin with a single-elimination playoff.

Base cost is $75, with a $10 discount for a buzzer system. All additional teams will be $50.

The field will be capped at 28 teams; I'll provide a field update in this thread. Other details will be finalized later.

Current Field (17):
Grimsley (2) -- two buzzers
Early College at Guilford (3) -- one buzzer
St. Mary's (2) -- one buzzer
NCSSM (2) -- one buzzer
East Chapel Hill (2)
Cave Spring (1) -- two buzzers
Raleigh Charter (4) -- four buzzers
Chapel Hill (1)

Do you mean RR within pools? Or are you really not expecting that many teams?

Since there's less than a week until the tournament and I haven't had anyone else express interest, I'm going to go ahead and close the field. I'm sending out an e-mail with updated information tonight; let me know if you don't receive it.

Raleigh Charter A defeated Cave Spring in the finals; RCA's Peter Schultz was also top scorer. NCSSM A and Early College A were in the consolation match, though I forget right-off who won.

Sara will be around with a more comprehensive update sometime in the near future and I'll upload stats as soon as I receive them.

hey brice..its sam from GSE. anyways...wish hoggard couldve made it out there, but we were a little late in getting started this year. Never fear, though! Hoggard quizbowl will make its triumphant debut on Nov. 1st at duke (albeit without two of our A teamers who will be taking the SAT.) I heard East Chapel Hill was there, art said it was fun. No robinson? im surprised...they seemed to get out to everywhere last year. But yeah, official stats will be a good gauge of this years NC lineup. it was NAQT right?

and while I know it doesnt belong here, if Mr. Grunden (and other NCOAST planners) are reading this, lets try and not schedule NCOAST on a Sci Oly weekend again. (that would be 3-14 and 4-24, I think)

Huh...never been to a HSAPQ tourney..hows the difficulty level on those? easier than NAQT or in between that and PACE?

Yes, a lot closer to NAQT (regular, not A sets) than PACE. It was a very accessible set for moderate high school players.

We are working on a better NCOAST date. And format. And a new location. And...

Hey, Sam! I understand that Robinson had a marching band competition or similar event that kept most of their team from being able to attend. I'm sure they'll be out in force elsewhere, though.

Anyway, I just received the stats this morning: they can be found at http://www.unc.edu/~rbruss/thc08 . They seem to be a combination of the round-robins and some of the playoff matches; I'll take a closer examination when I have the chance to later this weekend.
