Centennial's 4th Annual Tournament

Post by pgandhi »

Centennial is hosting its fourth annual It's Academic tournament on Sunday, December 14!

We'll have 50 housewritten questions per round this year. The format for each game will be: category round, tossup round, individual round (for both teams), tossup round with bonus questions.

Cost: $55 for the first team, $45 for additional teams. There will be a $10 discount per buzzer, 1 per team for working buzzers.

Don't forget, the deadline for registration is November 28th (around Thanksgiving). Just email us at [email protected] with the number of teams from your school that will be attending and how many buzzer sets you will be bringing. Registration will be from 8 A.M. to 9 A.M. on December 14.

Centennial High School is located in Ellicott City, Maryland, at 4300 Centennial Lane. We would be happy to provide directions to our school.

And, perhaps most importantly, we're planning an even better breakfast this year than we had last year! Also, pizza (cheese and pepperoni) will be available for lunch.

There will be a coaches/parents round during lunch.

We hope you can attend our tournament!
Please RSVP before November 28th. If you have any questions feel free to contact us at [email protected]

1st: WJ
2nd: Gonzaga
3rd: Whitman
4th: Blake

Overall, not bad at all. A few minor issues [misleading leadins ["wrote Cromwell," buzzed in and said Hugo, ruled incorrect,] repeats, and a missing page in a playoff bracket] but went pretty well, and even attempted pyrimidality instead of basic speed. Better than last year.

EDIT: evidently I have been beaten in on the results post.

Packets would be nice: prof.whoopie[at]gmail.com

I agree mostly with the above. This tournament continues to improve year to year. Breakfast was once again very appreciated.

The questions were mostly decent, but you guys have much room for improvement in terms of logistics. And more orange juice for breakfast would have been nice.

Yeah, the questions are far from ideal but they are are steps in the right direction.
Other issue: Daniel buzzed in on "it involved the carbonari" for the Unification of Italy, gave "Risorgomento", and got negged.

Yeah, so this tournament was bad. Logistically and question-wise it was bad, not that I expected much of anything.

Rather than have a load of e-mail requests for the set, would you be willing to post the set on the quizbowlpackets.com site?

Just a thought.

Certainly better then last year. At least for Wilson the readers were much better and aside from the delay on the first round I thought things ran pretty smoothly, if a bit slowly (but when has a tourney ever stayed on schedule?)

It's odd to see the kids conferring on tossups, but as practice for "It's Academic" it is quite useful. My only two quibbles were the running out of orange juice  and the fact that some of the topics repeated in the questions. I think there were 2-3 instances of this, the one that stands out is there were at least 2 questions about characters from Catch-22 with I believe 2 of the same answers. It was a differently phrased question, but looking for the same information.

Overall, my kids had fun and learned some stuff, and that's really the point.

If this doesn't go on the packet archive, could you email a copy of the questions to chewy3326 at yahoo dot com?

I think Crecy was also a repeat.

Will stats from this event be posted and available? I understand that they probably won't happen right away, but I just want to make sure they don't get forgotten about.

We can try to get the rankings up for the top 16 teams. I don't know whether or not we are a PACE qualifying tournament (a total of 42 teams came to our tournament), but if teams want to know, I can try and get that done by maybe this weekend?

The top 4 were:
1. Walter Johnson
2. Gonzaga
3. Whitman
4. Blake

As for the packets, we will probably email them to all of the teams that attended soon.

As neither the set nor the stats have been posted two weeks later, I thought I'd bump this. I really would like to see both.

We're really sorry about the delay. Our schools have been closed for the past two weeks and we did not meet as usual the week after the tournament. We are working on getting the final packets together and the final stats.
