FSU High School Tournament (11/01/08)

FSU High School Tournament at Maclay School
Tallahassee, Florida
Saturday, November 1st, 2008

INTRODUCTION:
Your school is invited to enter a team or two in the Florida State High School Tournament, to be held on at Maclay School in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday, November 1st, 2008. Please feel free to contact me, Billy Beyer, at fsucollegebowl at yahoo dot com with any questions, or to register your team(s). Here are the most important facts:

1) This tournament will be mostly organized/run by FSU, but will be hosted by the Maclay School, whose awesome coach is Mr. Ken Andino (kandino at maclay dot org)
2) We want to have as many teams as possible, so if you're a coach and don't mind reading/scorekeeping, let us know. If you want to send more than two teams, you'll need to provide a competent moderator.

ELIGIBILITY:
This is intended as a high school tournament. One or two teams may participate from the same school, but players on any given team must be enrolled in the same school, and we can't accommodate switching from one team to another during the tournament. There will not be a separate JV division, however, notable JV achievements will be recognized. JV is defined as those in 9th or 10th grade.

FORMAT:
This tournament will feature untimed rounds in which there will be 20 tossups (worth 10 pts. each) and up to 20 bonuses (worth a possible 30 pts. each.) Questions will be distributed across various academic categories, with a smattering of pop culture thrown in. There will be powers (worth 15 points), but there will not be bounceback on the bonuses. There will be no less than 5 preliminary rounds, followed by playoffs. Owing to the number of readers expected, we have tentatively capped the field at 18 teams. For that reason, schools are limited to bringing only one or two teams. However, with the addition of outside moderators, this number may be increased. Our target is 24 teams, but this can only be achieve with outside help from coaches like you.

FEES:
The entry fee per team is seventy dollars. Questions from the tournament can be purchased by teams attending for $10. Questions from our tournaments from previous years can also be purchased for an additional $10. Should you not be able to attend the tournament, questions can be ordered for $20, shipped. Please make checks out to either "William Beyer." Cash is also acceptable.
Discounts include:
-$5 per functional buzzer system
-$10 each additional team from the same school

QUESTIONS:
This will be a primarily house-written tournament. The questions will also be used at Valencia's Delta Burke tournament (10/24), which is primarily for community colleges. You should check with your players to make sure they are not dual-enrolled at a local CC and planning to attend that tournament.

Questions will be pyramidal in nature, allowing teams with the most knowledge to prevail in most cases. At the same time, questions will be on subjects accessible to most high school students. Bonuses have been written in an attempt that most teams will get 10, some will get 20, and fewer will get all 30, although it's entirely possible. There will not be any math calculation questions. However, it's always good to bring a pencil and paper/notebook to write down things. The difficulty of the questions will be similar to that of NAQT's invitational series of high school ("IS") packet sets, but possibly slightly more difficult.

SCHEDULE:
Registration will begin at 8:15 AM EST, with announcements at 8:45, and round one beginning at 9:00. There will be a break for lunch (not provided). The entire tournament should be over by 5:00 PM at the latest (hopefully). If your team doesn't make the playoffs nor wants to play in consolation rounds, your day will be over at around 1-2 PM.

LOCATION:
Unlike previous years, this tournament will NOT be held at FSU. Although the questions were written by FSU players, and most of the staff will be FSU players, we are holding the tournament at Maclay School because FSU thinks a high school tournament uses too much electricity. Very explicit directions to Maclay will be provided to all participants well in advance of the event.

REGISTRATION:
The deadline for registration is Wednesday, October 29th, 2009. To register, simply e-mail me (fsucollegebowl at yahoo dot com) stating your interest, and include the following information:
1) Name of your school and coach's name.
2) Cell phone number you can be reached at on the morning of the tournament
3) Number of teams that you will bring.
4) Number of functional buzzer systems you will bring.
5) Number of competent readers.

If you anything about the history of the FSU high school tournament, you will not be surprised to hear that Pensacola A won. This marks the fourth consecutive year that PHS A has won. They were led by David Fleischhauer and his ~85ppg, which made him the high scorer of the tournament. Guess who PHS A played in the finals? If you guessed Pensacola B, you would be correct.
