Mahfouz Memorial Literature Singles - 3/13
Mahfouz Memorial Literature Singles - 3/13
I am pleased to announce the Mahfouz Memorial Literature Singles: The Game of Fates will occur during the Weekend of Quizbowl II Tournament 3/13 (Friday.)
Time and Location:
Presumably the same building wherein Weekend of Quizbowl II matches will be played, but they will begin at 6pm.
Price:
$10 per a person. Like last year, with Ted Gioia's tournament, please pay to me directly, and not to WoQ staff.
Format:
Each round will contain 20 tossups and no bonuses. Right now the plans are to produce 9 rounds plus one finals round.* The finals will be different in that there will be 30 tossups (possibly more) and quite possibly it will be a "Packet of Death." There will be powers. I'm hoping to avoid rooms with six people in them like last time, but that will depend on the field, (and quite possibly other factors.)
*If there is a huge amount of people signing up, there might be a few extra rounds produced.
Eligibility:
As long as you go to a high school you are free to play.
Distribution:
25% American Literature
25% European Literature
25% British Literature
20% World Literature
5% Miscellaneous (Common Link tossups that span the distribution, Experimental Topics that do not fit snugly into the canon, or quite possibly whatever I just feel like asking.)
Writers:
I will be the main writer, but there is a diminutive possibility that I will be assisted in writing by others. However, Ted Gioia is assisting the editing process.
Prizes:
There will be prizes for the top four scorers, possibly more.
Other Information:
If you need any other information contact me at [email protected] (be sure to remove "SPAMGUARD")
How do I sign up?
Post here, or email me.

So hey guys, I personally have around 15 tossups to go at this point, and now I want to address to point out a few things.
> If your team has a buzzer bring it, if at all possible, (send me an email or post in this thread, letting me know.) We don't need a huge amount of buzzers, but the more buzzers we have, the fewer people per a room we can put into a room.
> If you are listed as tentative, please try to let me know on which side of the fence you will be ASAP. I will draw up brackets soon, and it would most certainly help.
> I will be definitely trying to guarantee five rounds for all participants.
> Yes, there is a packet of death of sorts for the finals, which will feature contributions by Rob Carson and Ted Gioia.
I will update more later.

Re: Mahfouz Memorial Literature Singles - 3/13
Hi everyone.
I see 20 people have tentatively signed up, and I'm going to be drawing up brackets now.
I will draw up a field of brackets for 24 and 28 people, so there's no reason not to sign up.
Chances are, the prelims will consist of matches with 4 people in them, with the playoffs having the same amount, if not fewer.
All of the information regarding the tournament will be posted in this thread shortly.
Important: Only Hunter has said they are bringing two buzzer systems, which is obviously not sufficient as of right now. If you can spare them, post in this thread or email me. Thanks.

Sadly, it appears that we won't be able to make it down until Saturday morning, so no Charter people will participate in this.

On the other hand, I'm in the midst of drawing brackets up, and I think 20 people is a fair number to work with. Therefore, unless 4 people sign up, I am closing registration, despite my earlier posts. (Bottom Line is, its tough to work with an odd number of people in a tournament like this.)

Re: Mahfouz Memorial Literature Singles - 3/13
Hello all, this post serves as a brief on how the tournament will work.
Essentially, the prelims will have five games, and four people to a room. The idea here is to play with as much as different people possible, with as little as overlap in terms of "repeat opponents," as little as possible.
Of the 20 people in the preliminaries, the top 12 will advance to the 3 round playoffs. There will be three brackets, each with four people, and three one on one matches will commence. In other words, each bracket will have a complete round robin.
The winner of each bracket shall advance to the finals. (3 person final)
To seed the people for the playoffs, the first seed will have the lowest rank sums. By rank sums, I mean that if you get 1st in three rooms and 2nd in two rooms, your rank sum will be 7 because 1st(3) + 2nd(2) = 7
Ties in individual games will be resolved with a tiebreaker question.
Ties among rank sums will be broken with Aggregate Points in the playoffs.
Ties in the playoffs between records will be resolved with Aggregate points for the playoffs only. All of this will be explained tomorrow in words.
Hope to see you at 6 tomorrow!
Ike

With approximately 9 rounds it should run until 9pm, but I would give time for it to be a bit late.
More buzzers can't hurt, in case something is broken.

Prelims have concluded. Standings after prelims:
Ag= aggregate rank for 5 prelim games; for example, someone who finished 2nd, 1st, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd in their 5 games would have an Ag of 12
Douglas Graebner left before the playoffs so Greg Tito got his seed and Wes Austin was bumped to the last playoff spot.
Playoffs are now in progress.

First, although I do not think that this was the case, if things were screwed up by my leaving early I want to apologize. Second, I thought the prelim questions were fairly good, altough there was some weirdness and a screwy answer line or two.

I don't know if there is going to be a discussion or what, so I'll just take the opportunity to thank Ike now. Obviously, any time you win something it's fun, but this was just about the most fun I've had at a quizbowl event. This set was generally awesome and the finals especially did an excellent job of distinguishing between players with fairly close knowledge on a lot of works and authors. I think you got the difficulty about just right. During the finals, I was pretty surprised by how few times two of us buzzed on the same clue, considering that happens during about 2/3 of lit tossups that Graham and I play. Thanks for a great set Ike (and Rob and Ted)!

Hey thanks for all of the comments.
Andrew Hart hasn't really asked for a mirror, so I will make a few minor changes, in the set, and posted online.
I will begin a discussion thread in the other part of this forum in due time.

Edit: Oh wait, WoQ didn't happen yet at Minnesota. Let me check first.

Re: Mahfouz Memorial Literature Singles - 3/13
Just a quick question on the rules here: on two occasions in the finals, Daichi, Ben, and I all buzzed in at the same time. Daichi negged, and Ben and I both immediately held down our buzzers to get the question when Ike cleared. Ben's buzzer rang in first on both occasions, presumably because his had priority over mine... it seems like there must be some way to deal with this sort of thing that doesn't rely on faster electricity?

As per viewtopic.php?p=124009#p124009, go ahead and talk about questions. People attending the Minnesota mirror, you're on your honor not to read further!

It will be posted as soon as the Minnesota mirror is over.
