Dear Quiz Bowl Coaches and Teams,

Seton Hall Preparatory School is pleased to invite you to the 2009 New Jersey NAQT State Championship Tournament. The tournament will take place at Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange on Saturday, March 21, 2009.

The tournament will be using NAQT set IS-85 and will be utilizing modified NAQT rules. (20 sets of untimed toss-ups and bonuses) The general format will consist of round-robin preliminary rounds, followed by round-robin playoffs.

The registration fees for this tournament are as follows:

• $80 for the first team and $70 for each additional team.
• A $10 discount will be given for each working buzzer system and a $15 discount will be given for each experienced moderator.
• In addition, any team attending BOTH the NJ State Championship Tournament AND the Livingston High School Tournament on March 28 will be given an additional discount. (Please contact me for details.)

With an initial field-cap of 30 teams, we will only be accepting two teams per school at this time. Once the initial field of 30 teams has been filled, any and all additional teams (including multiple additional teams from each school) will be placed on a wait-list.

Breakfast will be provided. As we are conveniently located close to numerous eating establishments, lunch will be on your own. A comprehensive list of and directions to said eateries will be provided to each team upon registration.

To register, please contact Michael T. Zinsmeister at [email protected].
A registration form will then be sent electronically or via snail mail.

On behalf of the entire Seton Hall Preparatory School Quiz Bowl Team, I look forward to seeing you on March 21!

Sincerely,

Michael T. Zinsmeister
Seton Hall Preparatory School
Academic Team Coach

The field is officially closed. (We have 30 teams.)

Seton Hall Preparatory school is located at 120 Northfield Avenue in West Orange, NJ. We are easily accessed by Route 280, the GSP, or NJ Turnpike. Should you need specific directions, please let me know.

The format for the day is as follows:

Round-robinn preliminary rounds with 5 groups of 6 teams each. After lunch, all teams will be re-bracketed and another 5-game round-robin will be played. At the conclusion of the final round-robin, one additional game will be played to determine final placing. (Similar to LIFT) The total number of games will be 11.

Registration will run from 7:30-8:30 with the first round beginning promptly at 8:45. Should all teams arrive early, we will begin sooner. Breakfast (donuts/juice/etc.) will be provided. Upon arrival, each team will be given a map to several nearby eateries. (McDonalds, Wendys, TGIFridays, Eagle Rock Diner, Subway, Northfield Deli, St. Cloud Deli, etc.) In addition, phone numbers of local pizzerias will be distributed should teams wish to order pizza.

The tournament will conclude @ 5:30. Please plan on spending the day and enjoying a full day of games.

As things change (and I am sure that they will!), I will update this discussion.

See you on March 21!

We now need 1 additional team. (I REALLY do not want to try to run this with 29 teams!)

If there is any new team interested OR if any registered school would like to bring an additional team, please let me know.

URGENT MESSAGE ...

Due to a water-main break beneath the school, we regretfully must postpone/cancel the tournament for tomorrow. I will be in touch with all coaches via e-mail this weekend to propose an alternate date this spring.

Thank you for your understanding.

Seton Hall Prep can't get the manpower to run this again, so as of now the tournament is cancelled.

Coaches,

Unfortunately, due to staffing problems, SHP will not be able to host the 2009 NJ NAQT State Championship tournament. We had hoped to use April 25 as our alternate date but, due to unavailabilty of students, that date is no longer viable. I apologize to all of the coaches who have been in limbo for these past two weeks. All checks will be reutrned forthwith.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Again, I apologize for the cancellation.

Thanks Mike, for getting back to us. I know it must've been difficult to pull the plug after making all the arrangements (twice?).

There may be hope for another site. Everyone please stay tuned, there may yet be a NJ State Championship...

EDIT: Sig added. For some reason the check box was unchecked.

If it is possible to still have a New Jersey State Championship, as Coach Fineman suggests, I would certainly volunteer to help as a reader or offer other help if I could. So, count Saint Joe's in, and, hopefully, perhaps other coaches who have both the time & inclination can also volunteer to help in some way to achieve this worthy result.

So, Coach Fineman---what ideas do you have and is there any help in particular that you might need?
