Monroe Academic TournamenT at James Monroe (5/16/09)

Posted: Fri Mar 20, 2009 6:01 pm
by intothenegs
James Monroe High School (Fredericksburg, VA) will be hosting the Monroe Academic TournamenT (MATT) on Saturday, May 16. The tournament will be using HSAPQ's ACF-4 set; we will now aim to offer all teams attending at least 10 games. Tournament format will depend on the field size- most likely, there will be bracketed preliminaries, and then rebracketed playoffs and then finals. The field cap will be 18 teams, for now, though we may expand that if there is demand and there are enough moderators to do so. There will be trophies for the top teams and book prizes for top individuals.

Pricing for this tournament:
+$60 base fee
+$55 per any additional teams
-$5 per functioning buzzer system (with eight working buzzers)
-$5 per moderator (someone who can read or scorekeep)
Minimum $45 per team

Teams that wish to register may either post here or email me at [email protected]. (Remove the "NOSPAM")

EDIT: Question set and pricing
EDIT: Tournament name change.

Let me know if you need any help editing or even finishing up with writing. I'm free after April 25 (HAVOC) to do whatever.

We may have interest in this, especially since it's the first announced tournament in May that i'm pretty sure we'd be able to go to.

But with us being accepted to NSC and HSNCT... we may have some funding issues.

This is still happening, no? We're looking into it, but we'd either go to this or to UMaryland's the week prior (if they move it from Mother's Day to Saturday).

This tournament is indeed still on. Also, if you are planning on attending, it'd be really helpful to express interest/sign up early so we can get an idea of how much of our school we need to use.

Gov is interested with 1-3 teams, depending on how many people we can get to commit to going.

Saint Anselm's is interested, but we couldn't know for sure until after April 25, the date of our next taping. May 16 is the taping date for the finals, so we couldn't register until we know about our possible participation in that. *massive knocks on wood all around in order to avoid possibly jinxing ourselves*

We're either at our cap already or are 2 teams away from reaching it, so if you plan on attending, your team should register soon! Teams that register now will be put on our waitlist while I check on tentative B teams and on the availability of more rooms and moderators.

The current plan for this tournament, if we end up with 18 teams, is to divide into three preliminary brackets of six, and then rebracket after lunch with the top two teams from each prelim bracket advancing into a playoff bracket of six. If any team goes undefeated in the playoff bracket, they will be declared the champion; if there is a tie record between two teams, we will play an advantaged final, and if there is a circle of death for first, the three teams will be seeded by PPG, and seed two and seed three will play to reach the championship match. If there is a tie for second place, it will be played off with one match; if there is a circle of death for second place, it will be played off with half packets.

I'm open to any suggestions anyone has on that; in any case, the tournament will be over by 6:00 at the latest as our school's drama club has a production that night and will be kicking us out by then. Registration will start at 8:00, there will be some general announcements at 8:45, and matches will start promptly at 9:00. Teams that do not arrive by 9:00 and have not contacted me will forfeit their first match. Our goal (perhaps somewhat unrealistic) is to wrap up 10 rounds by 4:30, as I know many schools have prom that night and many teams will want to return in time for that.

An email version of this will be sent out early next week.

The plan was to give the team that had previously won head-to-head an advantage going into the final- but if teams would rather not do that, that's fine by me. I'll admit I'm not terribly skilled at making tournament formats, so all input is very welcome.

Yeah, I don't think it's a good idea to give an advantage for head to head victory.

The conventional wisdom is to have a one-game final if the top two teams are tied, an advantaged final if a team has a one-game advantage (so, say, 6-0 versus 5-1), and no final if a team finishes two or more games ahead.

This sounds extraordinarily reasonable. I will definitely adopt the one-game final if the top two teams are tied; I'll work a bit at the schedule and see how we'll fit things if we need an advantaged final. In any case, I'll have a more definite answer on this by next Tuesday.

Thanks to James Monroe for hosting a great way to wind up our season. HSAPQ again provided good questions, the tournament was efficiently run, and things were generally a success . Congrats to Gov, who looked great today, beating us quite soundly two games in a row, and of course to Daichi, playing like a man on two hours of sleep. I look forward to the next iteration of the MATT.
