The Early College at Guilford would like to add February 6th, 2010 as the date for Quaker Bowl II. As you might expect, it will take place on Guilford College's campus. More details about the event will be coming soon.

I have absolutely no affiliation with the UNC club in this matter, but after cross-checking the above database with the UNC football schedule, I would strongly suspect that the Tar Heel Cup will be held on September 26th this year. (November 21st is also an outside possibility.)

Word is there will only be one year-long season of Brain Game this year on WRAL. This means 24 matches instead of 18, with the playoffs in the spring. Budget cuts.

This leaves more opportunities for you to attend traditional quizbowl events without conflict. Also, WRAL is aware of our announced schedule and is attempting to accommodate NCATA by arranging Brain Game taping dates away from our events. We'll see - TV production schedules are juggernauts, but it's nice they are making the effort.

They haven't finalized the taping schedule (as of this earlier this week) yet, but will send out the requests as soon as they do. I suspect it will be easier to get a date as there will likely be the same number of teams applying for more opportunities.

The Bonfire of the Humanities will use an as yet unassigned HSAPQ set for the tournament on Nov. 14. If you are concerned about the level of difficulty at last year's tournament, this should not be a problem. We will have entirely new problems this year, I promise.

(crossposted from the Tournament Announcement page, but with more NC details)

The second Bonfire of the Manatees tournament will be held at Raleigh Charter High School, in Raleigh, NC, on November 14, 2009. This tournament is open to any and all high school teams.

We will be using an HSAPQ set. Prelim round play will be Swiss-paired in real time; teams will play 7 prelim rounds. The top 4 teams will advance to a round robin playoff. We expect all teams to play through the first 7 rounds regardless of record or likelihood of advancing to the playoffs, as early departures hose the ranking system. We are adding one more round to give more teams more chances to play in the earlier rounds, but reducing the number of playoff teams as a counter to that. We appreciate that some of our teams come from several hours away.

Costs are $60 for the first team and $50 for each additional team from a school. A $10 buzzer discount will be given for each working buzzer (max $20).

Currently, we have teams from Early College of Guilford, Early College Academy, Pasquotank County HS, Robinson, Greensboro Day, Johnston County Middle College, and Richmond County registered. Registration will remain open until the Thursday before the tournament (Nov. 12).

Anyone in North Carolina interested in coming down to Alpharetta to play our JV tournament on October 31? As far as I can tell, it's the nearest Fall Novice mirror.

I'll pass it around. Us and Robinson are usually the only teams that travel that far. We're also still waiting to hear when (and if) Duke will hold the Celebrity Shoot mirror, which is often around that time.

The Bonfire of the Manatees is now PACE (ch-ching) affliliated. Finishing in the top 4 will earn you a berth at the PACE NSC in Fairfax in June.

Registration is still open for the tournament. The field is at a slightly disappointing 15 right now.

If the field draws 20 to 39 teams. If less than 20 attend, two would qualify; if more than 39 attend, eight would qualify.

Also, if the tournament is certified gold, two additional teams qualify (in addition to the # qualifying per how many teams attend); if it's platinum, four additional teams qualify.

I hope everyone enjoyed this year's rendition of Duke's Celebrity Shootout. I would like to thank everyone who came for attending and would like to welcome everyone back to next year's Celebrity Shootout.

Duke is thinking about hosting a tournament sometime next spring, with either a HSAPQ or NAQT set. However, we have yet to decide whether 1) this will occur and 2) if it will, when exactly and 3) what question provider we will use (HSAPQ or NAQT). Any input to date and/or question provider from you guys will be greatly appreciated.

So judging from the calendar, it looks like there's room for a season-ending tournament just before break (12/12 or 12/19) would teams be interested (or able, for that matter, I know it's a bit out of the way) in coming to Wilmington for a regular NAQT tournament? I imagine Raleigh teams could make it pretty easily, but charlotte kids may have more trouble... =/ anyways, this post is really just to gauge interest before we put in an order. (as per all NAQT tournaments, top 15% would qualify for nationals.)

Any chance I could sell you on the New Trier Varsity set? It'll be available for 12/19 at $12/team (significantly less than an IS set), will be slightly harder than an IS set, and (assuming you meet other requirements) will make you an NSC qualifier.

hmmm 12/19 then? although that might be cutting it too close to winter break...well if it works out it works out, if theres not enough demand, so be it. (also, @new trier, that sounds like a great deal. what lvl do you think theyd be, HSNCT or a bit below that?)

I would say similar to HSNCT in difficulty, but more ACF-like in style and distribution. Shoot me an email if you're interested; I'd love to get the set mirrored in the Carolinas.

We were all set for 3/20 and then a conflict with the site arose. Sorry about that--we were trying to accommodate everyone, and that usually turns out to be impossible.

Ok, judging from other coach's responses it looks like 12/19 is going to work out better than 12/12. In addition, some new teams from the Carteret county area (who have, sadly not been playing "Good Quiz Bowl") have expressed interest, so for the sake of expanding the circuit etc. etc. it looks like a HSNCT level packet is probably not a good idea (and, frankly, aside from RCHS and a few other teams, most NC schools would probably find them too difficult as well.) Eric, is there anyway I can get in touch with other coaches from around the state (in particular the eastern half of the state) since it looks like only 3 or so are actually active on the boards?

Okay so I looked at all the weekends between NCOAST (3/13) and NAQT nationals (5/29) and the best dates for hoggard to host a tourney were 4/3 and 4/10. slight conflicts exist for both dates; the 3rd is towards the end of our spring break and the ACT is on the 10th. however, those are the two dates on the table. if anyone is interested in attending and has a preference for one date or the other, please let me know. we hope to have a specific date determined and all necessary information available by January 15th.

Reminding everyone that the Right Triangle Open will be held Feb. 27 at Raleigh Charter. In the past this has been a mid-march tournament but this year the calendar seems to have jumped up a month.

The tournament uses a three-part format: directed team category questions in the first part (one each to a team and then a tossup, a la PLQB), a 15 question themed worksheet, and a 10 TU/bonus section.

I am trying to respond to the feelings of the field and holding back on my fetish with designing progressively weirder match schedules and instead offer this: 5 Swiss-paired rounds before lunch, one after, and then a single elimination playoff among the top 8 teams (or 16, depending on field size). Teams will be seeded for the playoffs on the basis of rankings at the end of regular play (the Swiss system sorting everyone out automatically). There will be no consolation rounds (unless some remaining teams want to play the questions while they wait). Stats will be collected for both the prelims and playoffs.

Fee Schedule:

$55 for the first team, $45 per additional team, with a $10 per working buzzer discount (no limit).

This generally runs faster than the Bonfire tournament because of the nature of the questions and that our staff is better trained in the spring.

Contact me if you want to register: egrunden AT raleighcharterhs DOT org.

Let me take this opportunity to shamelessly advertise my baseball-entitled tournament to a baseball-loving state: The Chris Ray (as in, the pitcher) Memorial Open will be on 3/20, which is the week after NCOAST since that was moved up one. It's at the College of William and Mary which, for research triangle area teams, is 3-3 1/2 hours away. Okay I know that's far but you'll probably be eligible for the 200 mile travel discount (if it's close just ask me) and there are plenty of good hotels to stay at in Williamsburg. Finally, if you have to spend the night, it's a great place to take your team for a little R&R and sightseeing with Colonial Williamsburg right next door along with Busch Gardens and a Ripley's Believe or Not museum. Plus, speaking of baseball, you can watch some pretty good Tribe games at Plumeri Park any day Friday-Sunday against UMass (tickets are from $5-$7). Highlight of the pre-season: can former football standout (at WR and QB) RJ Archer match his performance on the mound as he switches sports for the spring of his senior year?

I want to grab some NC teams because 3/20 is also the date of Delaware's Blue Hen invitational, so the Maryland teams that would normally come from 3 hours away will probably be there. Details can be found here: http://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9392, spread the word!

Sincerely,
Matt Morrison

At Saturday's RTO I will have data for coaches and players to evaluate in order to pick the members of the 2010 NCATA All-Star team. I've put together the results of all the tournaments in NC this year for which I have individual stats (Bonfire, Speedway Shootout, Tar Heel Cup, Belles' Bowl) by player. These will be available at checkin so that you can hopefully see some of these players play if you've not seen them before. We'll be voting as we did last year, by instant runoff--you'll rank your top 8 players 8-1 (whether they are statistically the top 8 or not) and I'll tally all the votes by rank to find the top 8: the player with the most points is #1.

I will post this information on the NCATA website for evaluation and put a copy of the ballot there as well, and I will promote this through the listserv.

It's too bad we had two tournaments wiped out by snow, but at least we have the 4 we have.

Eric

Congratulations to the Cobra Kings for winning, and to Raleigh Charter for hosting, what I hear was an thoroughly enjoyable tournament.

UPDATE on Hoggard Invitational:

BIG NEWS: This tournament will likely now be a mirror of Yale University's famous high school tournament, BHSAT! (Bulldog High School Academic Tournament)

mACF format, regular high-school difficulty, 16 team cap, but if >10 teams sign up it will still be held with a different bracketing style to fit the field.

Field Update!
The following teams have expressed interest in attending (according to people who I asked about it)

Raleigh Charter High School (two teams?)

W.G. Enloe Magnet School (two teams, maybe three)

Also, registration is ongoing for NCOAST, on March 13 at Guilford College. This is the state tournament, and it is an open tournament, so there are no qualifying events. Just come and play.

All we ask is that you bring a coach/player/assistant who is willing to read or score for matches, as staffing will definitely be a challenge.

Fees:
First Team: $60
Additional teams: $50
Buzzer discount: $10 per working buzzer, limit 2

Source is NAQT; as such you are subject to their eligibility rules.
