FAcT V (10/10/09) at Yale (New Haven, CT)

Post by Aaron »

Yale Student Academic Competitions is pleased to announce that the 5th annual Fall Academic Tournament (FAcT) will take place on Yale's campus on October 10, 2009. The tournament, which will be untimed, will be run on an NAQT A-level packet set using NAQT rules. The tournament will use IS-89A, for which we have geographic exclusivity for the states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York. Of the two high school tournaments that Yale has annually hosted, FAcT is a little more relaxed and serves as a great fall tune-up.

Teams that finish in the top fifteen percent of the field will automatically qualify for NAQT’s 2010 High School Nation Championship Tournament (HSNCT). FAcT is also a Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE)-affiliated event, which allow teams to qualify for their National Scholastics Championship.

Registration will begin at 8:30 AM with the first round beginning by 9:30 AM. Fees and registration information for the tournament is as follows:

Base fee: $80
Working buzzer system: -$10 each
Moderator: -$5 each
Additional teams: -$5 each
(-$5 second team, -$10 third team, etc.)
Minimum fee per team: $60

Checks made out to Y. Student Academic Competitions (not Yale Student Academic Competitions) can be sent out to YSAC, P.O. Box 207092, New Haven, CT 06520 or given to us on the day of the tournament.

If you would like to register your high school or have any questions about FAcT, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you on the 10th.

Sincerely,

Aaron Sin
President, Yale Student Academic Competitions

P.S. We plan to hold Bulldog High School Academic Tournament (BHSAT) XIX in Spring 2010. BHSAT is entirely written and edited by Yale Student Academic Competitions, and regularly attracts teams from across the nation. We will let you know more details (including, but not limited to, an exact date) later this fall.

I am aware that it is. However, the 17th is a PSAT test day, and after weighing that conflict as well as others within the quizbowl schedule, we decided the 10th would be the better day.

Aaron,

The affiliation with PACE is great news.

Meanwhile, any news on the field that is interested or that has in fact already registered?

Stuyvesant is interested. So the cost for the second team will be $70 and the first team, $80? A total of $150? Correct me if I'm wrong.

The discounts are for each additional team, so for two teams it would be $80 + $75 = $155, plus any discounts for moderators and/or buzzers.

Aaron,

Please add Seton Hall Prep to the list. Definitely 1 team, 2 buzzers, and 1 moderator. I may be able to bring up to 3 additional teams. (I am beating the bushes this weekend!)

Sorry for the delay with stats for the tournament. All stats for both prelims and playoffs can now be found here: http://sites.google.com/site/ysacyale/fact2009.

After nine preliminary rounds in which teams were separated into two brackets, teams were rebracketed for three more playoffs rounds.

In the top bracket, Kellenberg A came out undefeated (12-0 overall) and Cheshire A finished second with one loss (11-1 overall).
