Maryland HSAPQ All-Star Tourney

Uh, how are we going to do the all-star team in this state? Are there any reliable coaches to hold tryouts? If so, who?

I would be happy to run tryouts/practices at Maryland and act as a chaperon to the event if needed. It's probably not necessary to do this right away, as most all-star teams don't get assembled until Winter at the earliest, but I'm up for it when the time rolls around.

I would suggest just running the same kind of "tryout" that team maryland used to have, except that instead of doing things that don't make sense like playing the 6th and 7th role players against each other on questions outside of their area to decide the final roster, we just send the best team Maryland can produce. On that note, get it together, Maryland! You used to be cool.

Well, there are other things to take into account besides "who's better." Like, Samantha knows her painting, but Doug's got that covered pretty darn well. I'm not making any judgments on who should make the team, of course; however, I will note that you want some specialists.

Since the important thing is coming up with people who work well together, a good tryout once we have a shortlist might be to have different combinations of people play packets against UMD freshmen or some other constant group of players.

Yeah, that list overlaps quite a bit- I'm not sure how many points I'm going to get with the other three around and they're going to hate me to death for negging so much.

So, let's start thinking about this now that we've played some tournaments. Here are some ideas for picking a team:
1. Tryout at UMD. Possibly set up some kind of rotating doubles thing(each round everyone forms a different doubles team) to see who plays well together.
2. Nominate someone to pick the team.
3. Figure something out in this thread, have the team we come up with play together at least once(either at an open tourament or as an exhibtion team), adjust as needed.

Sounds goods, although said tryouts should probably wait till after exams. Any weekends look good to people?

Post by DumbJaques »

Oh hey, a thread about this already exists!

MAQT is happy to facilitate and host the HSAPQ tryouts. In the spirit of this tournament, we'd like this process to be as informal as possible while maintaining the guidelines necessary to actually pick a team.

We'd surely like input - what do you guys want to see happen? The simplest thing, to me, seems to be to host a few sessions of tryouts, and pick the best team possible. Essentially, this would be the same as the old team Maryland selection process, except:

-Obviously, we'd be using questions reflective of the All-Star Tournament rather than PAC.
-The best team is not necessarily the highest-scoring group of four/six in a free for all round or whatever. Implicit in having a selection process is that we're trying to choose the best team. The group that gives Maryland the best chance of finishing highly should be the overriding metric.
-You can have more than one buzzer, as a group. Probably.

I agree that waiting until after Winter Break is the best time to host tryouts - sometime in early to mid January seems optimal to me, but we don't go to high school, so share some thoughts. Personally, I'd really like to get the word out to teams who don't read this board as much - among other things, this tournament is a great way to spread some good quizbowl on a micro level. This is also something current players can help with! Spread the word at tournaments (especially things like Beltway or Quizmaster) - perhaps fliers, even, are in order. Any ideas you guys have for what we can do to this end are highly encouraged.

So, is there anyone for whom tryouts at Maryland would be a problem? Are there days that are simply impossible for people? Feel free to post or email with questions/comments, and hopefully we can lock details/times and have a solid month to get the word out.

Since at least some of the likely candidates go to school in Montgomery County, any tryouts should be held after the end of exams on the 21st.

I'm not sure, but it'd be best if we got this resolved soon. If people don't want to discuss what date is good for them, fine, but it needs to be resolved whether they respond or not. I do want to hear back from Maryland, though, on what dates are good for them.

So apparently the best thing for MD is if we hold tryouts one day on a weekday evening. I'll post a poll on what day of the week works best and someone should probably post a poll in the facebook group.

Hey everybody!

A lot of weird stuff seems to be happening in this forum, but let's try to bring some order to the chaos.

The University of Maryland will be proudly hosting tryouts for Team Maryland, beginning next week. From the results of this and the other poll, it actually looks like Friday is the best day to host tryouts. Bummer for me, but I guess it's doable for a little while. If anyone has a really strong objection to this date, please let me know.

Tryouts are tentatively scheduled from 5-8 pm in Jimenez Hall, room 1124. They'll last at least several weeks, and missing one tryout (while presumably not ideal) isn't going to disqualify anyone. As mentioned before, this team will be chosen using what gives Maryland the best chance to win as pretty much the sole criterion.

Additionally, I would really appreciate it if every Maryland player/coach reading this post could forward this link to all other Maryland team contacts you might have. Not everybody reads the forums.

EDIT:I guess you can check out the facebook site at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=401025860723. Please don't confine any important information about this event to that post though, because I hate facebook.

Also, I dont' know if each team needs a coach/chaperone but I'd be interested if that's the case. I'm new and relatively inexperienced, but what better way to learn about getting better at quizbowl than chaperoning an event like this?

Well, David did put up some pretty impressive numbers at Fall Novice. Of course, there are more factors that go into building an all-star team than individual top scores(for one thing, it's more important to have a specialist in each major subject), but he looks like a contender. The one person I consider indispensable is Kuo-Kai, because to the best of my knowledge he's the closest thing we have to a strong science player. Also, Chris Ray has volunteered to chaperone/coach but I don't see any problem with having a co-coach.

The dates look good, but getting to UMD from anywhere west of there by 5 on a Friday afternoon is going to be awful. Do you think it would make sense to push the sessions up by a half-hour or so?

Okay, so our only hope of pulling off the Friday tryout is to hold the tryout as early as possible(1:30 or 2 if schools let out early and 3:30 if not) and end practice after 2.5 hours or when things start to look really sticky, whatever happens first. Is this even plausible?

So, here's a suggested tryout schedule:
Session 1: 2/19
Session 2: 2/26
Session 3: 3/5 or 3/6(after PAQT if that's better for a lot of people)
Decision announced: 3/7 when everyone's at ZIGZAG.

I don't know how long the tournament is going to end up lasting (should be 11 rounds, but things happen) and I don't know how long we have the building, so I'm not sure how feasible it would be to have a session after PAQT.

2/19 and 3/6 won't work for the Blair kids. School event and It's Ac taping, respectively.
