Illinois Pre-Season Top 10 Poll

Post by Dan-Don » Wed Sep 02, 2009 12:04 am

As you might know, there was some unpleasantness recently in the Illinois '09-'10 thread after some people posted controversial and inflammatory opinions regarding a member of the IHSSBCA's pre-season Class AA poll ballot. As a fun and inoffensive way to get our opinions out, I propose that all people on this forum fill out their own ballot in this thread. You don't need to explain your rankings (ESPN.com-stlye) like we did earlier in the summer, just rank your top 10 teams (from either class) according to the standards of good quizbowl. I'll tabulate the votes next Wednesday at 12:01 AM. Sound good? Mmkay. I'll start.

1. Auburn
2. Stevenson
3. St. Ignatius
4. Loyola
5. Fremd
6. Lisle
7. Viator
8. C-Dale
9. BG
10. WWS

I'll just do this the way I think the IHSSBCA poll works: when a team gets ranked #1, they earn 10 points; #2, 9 points, etc. Then I'll reveal the top 10 points-earners in order of how many points they earned, and then I'll alphabetically list some honorable mentions that were #11-15 in points.

Given who's posting these polls, I'd just like to clarify....we're talking overall, not just IHSA. Right?.....Right?.....

I filled out my poll with the intent of guessing how teams would do playing good quizbowl (which excludes IHSA) assuming they played it. In fact, I did the same for my IHSSBCA poll, except I limited myself to Class AA teams.

If we were talking IHSA I'm pretty sure that IG would be ranked better than #3 given Deveau's math skills.

Hmm. I wish I knew how good Stevenson was aside from Zach. I'm gonna rank them based on what I've been hearing/reading. #1-3 is really hard to do. Lisle would be here if it wasn't only AA.

1) Stevenson
2) Auburn
3) St. Ignatius (it's pretty scary to think that this ranking is solely based on Deveau. I wonder how much help there will be)
4) Loyola
5) Carbondale (I think people are sleeping on them, just a bit. Jeremiah + Ben Chametzky + other solid players will be a pretty solid force)
6) Viator
7) IMSA (if Bonny plays... which is pretty iffy)
8) Fremd (I wanna see that one guy play...)
9) WWS
10) BG

I return from my tempban like Jean Valjean returned after 19 years in the quarries of Toulon!

Anyways...I don't really have anything to say, just wanted to make the Les Mis reference. More people need to vote!

Final results:

1. Auburn - 103
2. Stevenson - 101
3. Saint Ignatius - 92
4. Loyola - 78
5. Saint Viator - 60
6. Carbondale - 39
7. Fremd - 36
7. Lisle - 36
9. BG - 20
10. IMSA - 15
11. Wheaton-Warrenville South - 14
12. Naperville Central - 12

Near-misses: NT, Latin, Litchfield.

What are your initial reactions? I think my team's too high.

EDIT: Forgot to put vote totals in for Fremd/Lisle

A couple of general observations:

1) I believe that the top four will change more often than a lot of people care to admit due to various factors.

2) Expect a couple of the lower-ranked teams to move up near the top.

2) To what degree did people consider teams' ability to travel and quality questions in their rankings?

Aside from that, the Loyola coach abstains. Courteously.

Carbondale will surprise a lot of people, for sure. They have multiple quality sophomores, and at least one will play indispensably on varsity. I really have no idea how good Lisle is. I know Greg's a phenomenal player, and I saw Neal Kfoury get questions at camp, but I guess BJ Houlding is right. We just need to play.
