If we need to reschedule, how would February 13 or 20 work for teams? How late would you need to be notified in the event that we do need to postpone?

Update: We're now leaning toward 2/20 if we need to change. We should come to a final decision by Wednesday or Thursday morning at the latest.

Raleigh Charter would not be able to reschedule in any event. We're slammed through March with other tournaments. Granted, we're probably the extreme exception given our travel distance and arrangements, but we'll make our decision Friday (since it wouldn't do us much good to be up there in the hotel and find out Saturday morning the show's off). So don't make your decision based on our situation.

Given the difficulties William and Mary have had with their attempts at a tournament on 2/13 that does not sound like the best idea.

We can't come on Feb 20th. Our NAQT state championship is that day...

It appears that the best solution here is simply to hope the snow will be manageable.

Magically whenever a team cancels a tournament more than 24 hours in advance due to snow, it seems like the day of the tournament roads are clear and everything could have run normally if it weren't canceled. I would strongly suggest waiting to make a decision, and going ahead with the tournament in all but the extreme circumstances.

Snow is certainly coming, it's just a matter of how much. A lot of Maryland/Virginia teams should have no problem coming, but it's going to be tough for us, as i said, having to rely on a lot of two-lane roads in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland before the Bay Bridge.

Having talked to my parents, Caesar Rodney has a few more options.

1) We could borrow one of my families SUVs for Mr. C to drive, which is much better suited for the snow than his little car, which should make our trip drastically easier, and more appealing to his fiancée. This option is my preference.

2) If Mr. C won't be able to drive because of the snow, even with an SUV at hand, then my dad has volunteered to drive us to TJ this Saturday for the tournament. If avoidable I would prefer not to go with this option, but if we need to go with it to ensure that we get to this tournament then we won't hesitate to do so.

Both options are assuming that the rest of the team is still allowed to go, of course. Either way though, it seems likely that Caesar Rodney will be able to make this tournament at the current date, snow or not.

We could always take Route 1 north to I-95, then south through Baltimore and to DC. That adds anywhere from 30-60 minutes to our drive, but it's feasible.

At this point, the tournament calendar is almost full and may not accommodate a reschedule. Let's plow through(no pun intended) and hope we don't get socked.

There is a chance that our principal will not let us attend in case of significant snow. We may not even know if we can come until early Saturday morning. I strongly suggest you develop several alternative bracketing schemes in case this weather becomes an issue.

It looks like at this point the best thing to do is avoid postponing the tournament unless Fairfax County cancels activities for 1/30. If they do, it'll be announced at http://www.fcps.edu/news/emerg.htm, but this may not happen until the morning.

Registration will start at 8 and we'd like to begin around 9. There will be a complimentary donut breakfast in the morning.

If we don't lose too many teams to snow, we'll run round robins in four brackets of as close to 6 teams as possible in the morning. After lunch the top 12 teams will be divided into two even 6-team brackets and play another round robin, followed by a cross-bracket game. Depending on how many other teams there are, we'll either have two 6-team round robins or two 4-team double round robins in the afternoon.

We're going to try to make it, using a parent's SUV in case the snow is worse by the time we come back. It looks like it'll be fine in the morning though, but the afternoon may bring accumulation.

Olivia, I was just told by our principal that we would not be allowed to travel tomorrow, so regrettably we will need to cancel. Hopefully our cancellation will not cause you any major difficulties as 18 is still a good number to work with. Hopefully you will have no further cancellations, as the storm is not predicted to be as significant in your area. Good luck.

All right. Thanks for letting me know.

With 18 teams, we'll have round robins in 3 brackets of 6 in the morning, then rebracketing into the top, middle, and bottom six teams after lunch. The TIDUS side event during lunch is also still on.

This will, in fact, cost exactly five bucks. If the late announcement of this fact incapacitates anyone from playing that's my bad.

So this got canceled after 1.5 rounds. The questions were pretty good so far. The bonuses were of good difficulty, but a few rather transparent questions came up.

I liked the set so far, but unfortunately I won't be able to play on it (Curse you, Mac McGarry!). 2 hour round trip to beat GDS C and play half a game against a house team is not how envisioned this going down. But oh well. Good luck on the 20th. I think we're going to send a team to this but I'm not sure ATM.

A 5 1/2 hour round trip to play one match and get our butts kicked by St. Anselm's is much worse, trust me. Oh well though. This entire situation is just really unfortunate. Good luck on the 20th! Again, we sadly won't be able to make it on the rescheduled date since that's the date of out NAQT State Championship. Also, yea, the questions that we saw were pretty good.

Given that our mirror has been rescheduled for 3/27, what would teams think of our postponing this until March as well? 3/13 is Ben Cooper, but would March 20 work better than February?

Gah! What about early April? Two later dates are claimed in April (April 17th is the CR Rider Bowl, and the 24th is the Prison Bowl mirror at VCU), but early April seems open from what I recall.

3/27 is the beginning of Spring Break for teams in Montgomery County, so I don't think that'd be good for Maryland teams either.

EDIT: Since we're tossing out non-quizbowl conflicts like It's Academic, I'm just going to say that WJ can't do anything on 2/27 (Science Olympiad) and 3/20 (Science Fair)

February 20th may be the best option. I know that some teams won't be able to make it, but it looks like this one has the highest concentration of available teams.

Even though it's a date we can't attend, it's the one that makes the most sense, yes.

Why not Feb 13th? It's a little bit short notice, but there are no other events close to DC that day. The William and Mary one is probably too far for most of the field. The same goes for Feb 27th.

In addition, several VHSL Regionals take place that day.
