While possibly cheaper, longer, and a shorter drive, how can ultimate frisbee compare with meeting and giving Michael Vick a high-five.

P.S. You also get a lot of chocolate, Doritos, and other assorted trans-fats from the staff while there.

Kidding aside, the US has plenty of room for several quiz bowl camps. ACE will probably NOT do any more than the 2 we do every summer. And I would love to find a college who would subsidize our camps to allow a lower entry fee.

I can say with all honesty that the reason I am where I am today is because of the ACE Camp. And how in the WORLD can you not have fun when the Atlanta Falcons are in town.

P.S. You do realize that most hardcore college quiz bowl players despise TRASH (although I personally like it). And, there are a lot of "open" TRASH tournaments in the Southeast, usually held by Charlie Steinhice at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga

Have you ever attended an ACE quiz bowl camp?

Why are you interested in dissing our camps? We ACE folk certainly have never dissed anything you guys are doing.

As to some campers disliking ACE camps. Of course that has happened and will continue to happen. No camp that has 300+ high schoolers is gonna please all of them every year. We do have a remarkable repeat business, however. Over 50% of our campers each year are repeat players. I am proud that so many have seen the value of ACE camps and continue to support us.

I went to ACE at SEMO for two years and improved vastly. I didn't think it was possible to improve so much in less than a week. The only part I didn't like about ACE was the QU tournament. I realize this might be necessary because so many teams focus on QU. Better QU than TRASH, though. I am one of those aforementioned hardcore academic players that despise trash.

Agreed, that was the one part I hated about it.

I'm coming back this year, to Furman!

Yeah, i loved ACE camp. It was alot of fun and even though it was strict about times to be when and where, it was also extremely beneficial in my quest of becoming a better quiz bowl player. While i cannot go back this year due to GHP, if i could i definitely would and i know that at least two of my teammates are planning to. Just my two cents, but i would definitely recommend it.

For all that I complained about it, I did enjoy ACE. My only regrets are not having been the football fan I am now back then and that I didn't learn from my first year to bring some food on my own. Maybe quizbowl kids have a tendency towards sado-masochism, who knows...

Who is going to SEMO this year? I will be back.

As of June 15, we have 100 registered for Furman and 58 for SEMO. That is behind where we usually are for Furman and ahead of ususal for SEMO.

Most Brookwood team members are coming to the SEMO camp this year. I would estimate that we'll have about 80-85 players at SEMO (compared to 68 last year.)

I'm going and I think the Pikeville team also are going to SEMO from Kentucky. Maybe a few other teams or individuals may show up as well.

I remember that the science major rotates the focus of study from year to year, last year was chemistry and bio if i remember, and the year before it seems was geology. Does anybody know what the focus is going to be this year? I'm thinking it was astronomy or physics, but i'm not sure which one...

(I've been attending the Furman camp if that matters.)

I just finished the first ACE camp today, and it was great. I learned more in 5 days than I learned all of last year, probably. Even the stuff I haven't retained fully, I have written down so I can write questions about it and stuff later. I look forward to playing this year with the new information I learned with ACE. - Yes, I know this sounds like a cheesy adverstisement :P

KentB, Mr. Barry, or others - the results are up for the SEMO tournaments. How will the structure of the camp tournaments be different this year? Are there only two, and what kind of questions will be used for the give/take tournament?

Camp was pretty great. Both minor subjects (art and music) were extremely informative and covered material I remember coming up frequently at PACE and other tournaments. Terrill Wilkins (Dorman, class of 03) did the art lecture, and told us stories about obscure art tossups he'd gotten. The majors were pretty solid, I have about 20 pages of literature notes to study, plus a couple of great packets. Undoubtedly, the best part was playing with and against some top players. Although playing hold em till 2 am in the dorm common room was pretty cool, too.

In response to inquiries about types of questions, I'm not sure if Furman will be the same, but our tournaments were designed to expose players to as many formatas as possible. This was enlightening, but occasionally annoying (two individual rounds in a 4 round game). Also, while we did get to play NAQTs in practice, we weren't able to use them for mini-tournaments, i assume because they take a while/not many players were used to them. Still, it was a great experience, and I'm definately going back next year. Good luck to everyone going to Furman.

This camp was simply amazing. Between learning 80-90% of all math I'm going to need for the next two years (going from no trig background to a very good beginning on trig AND calc), realizing that I, too, can become a music specialist, sitting in on Group 1's practice and watching the best science, lit, and soc. studies players I've EVER seen slaughter the heck out of each other, being in, let alone placing 2nd, that awesome math tournament (incredibly fast paced, maybe 4 total negs the entire 30 questions for all players), and beating Wei Lu the last night of hold 'em poker...it was the best experience of my quiz bowl career and I'd be nuts not to go next year. Very simply, with the practices and tourneys they give you, one can become someone who gets 4 or 5 out of every 6 tossups in a subject you have minimal experience in, then with their notes, handouts, and teaching, keep it and spread it to anyone who didn't go. Kudos to Mr. Barry and all the staff for an excellent camp and one that I will be returning to next year.

Humza and Alex are going to Furman. I believe they are majoring in science and social studies, respectively. I'm Chris Ray, I played mostly on B and C team this year, so we've probably run into to each other once or twice. Thanks for the congrats, there were some seriously good players there and it wasnt easy.

Yeah, I am currently writing a bunch of music questions from the stuff that we learned, and I will write a bunch for art and social studies as well. I still need copies of the literature information, so I'll wait til after the Furman camp and try to get some from Mr. Barry if they have extras.

threadjackers unite! Ah well, I have gone to SEMO for two years now and am planning on a third year, but I was wondering if going to both camps is allowed/productive. Can anyone help me?

It should be productive, as long as you are taking different majors. I can't imagine taking any major that you have some experience in twice being effective. I don't see why you can't go to both, but I'm not Mr. Barry.

We use the same practice and tournament questions at both camps, so we do not encourage players to attend both. If someone really wanted to, they could do both but could notn practice or play in the tournaments.
