Midwest Championship May 15, 2010 at Culver (IN)

Post by pblessman »

Culver Academies will host the Fourth Annual Midwest Championship on Saturday, May 15, 2010 (this is the day AFTER AP's end). Culver is located in North Central Indiana, about fifty miles South of South Bend, and about 100 miles Southeast of Chicago.

This tournament is meant as a warm-up for Nationals-bound teams and an opportunity for good teams who can't make Nationals to compete at a similar level. This question is scheduled to use the Division II SCT set. Teams will be guaranteed a minimum of eight games.

Participating teams should be either qualified to Nationals, or should have a winning record with at least ten wins (contact me if you have questions about whether your team "qualifies"). We are aiming for a field size of about sixteen teams. Several teams from IN, KY, OH, MI, IL, and WI have previously expressed interest, but we encourage teams from other states to participate... we have a very flexible view of what constitutes the "Midwest." In various years our field has included DCC, East Lansing, New Trier (IL), Loyola (IL), and Dunbar, among others.

The fee structure is as follows:

Registration fee: $60 per team,
Working buzzer system: -$10
Long drive discount: -$10 (>150 miles)
Really Long Discount: -$20 (>300 miles)

We have housing available in our campus motel for $20/two person room.

Please register or express interest by e-mail ASAP, but certainly before April 30: blessmp [at] culver [dot] org
Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks!

I'm glad Manual will be there! You don't have to stay either night, but we have reasonably priced rooms ($20 for two person room) available on campus if you want to stay over Friday night.

We're solid with ten teams and two question marks (PORTA and Harrison):

Current Field: (11 Teams) as of May 6

Culver (IN)
Dan-Don (IL)
Detroit Catholic Central (MI) x2
Detroit Country Day School (MI)
Dunbar (KY)
Du Pont Manual (KY)
Harrison (IN) x2
Loyola (IL)
St. Joe's (IN)

I'm still hoping for a team from Ohio and maybe even WI or MN. Overall, the strongest field we've ever had at Culver, and I would think the strongest field in the Midwest this year, so this should be an exciting tournament! Still some time to add, so let me know if you want to join the fun!

DCDS and DCC finished 1-2 in MI-NAQT
Dunbar and Manual finished 1-2 in KY-NAQT (Dunbar 1st in Governor's Cup, Manual 4th)
Culver and St. Joe's finished 1-2 in IN-NAQT (Culver and Harrison 3-4 in Chipbowl, our very own official state championship  )
Loyola, even though they they didn't advance to State due to the Sectional they are in, should (IMO) be considered a Top-5 team in Illinois

It should be fun!

I'll also send out an email to coaches, but I want to see if there is interest among teams of running a Visual Art side event featuring Douglas Graebner's set. Still working our details, but we would most likely run this at lunch or right after the tournament.

EDITED....Manual 175 (?), DCD 20

Neil powers EDITED 30s the bonus, DCD now has 65

Manual powers some CURRENT EVENTS!!! Manual 190 (?), DCD 65...I think

Neil negs with EDITEDfor a different EDITED. Manual 20s an opera bonus.

Manual first-lines a history tossup off literature clues. 30

255-120, Manual at the half.

No subs after a brief halftime. Jonah gets a little sassy with Blessman. Now they're looking for a board scorer....but it will apparently distract Neil and a player from Manual.

Manual powers some SCIENCE! right after Nolan (sitting next to me) had it a split second before.

DCD powered something

Manual 285, DCD 205. But there's apparently a question about the score? Jonah "suck at adding...math is hard." It really is for some of us.

Manual first-lines some lit to put this game away. We will head to game 2 momentarily.

Last tossup...Neil powers it but it's irrelevant.

Final score: Manual 360, DCD 330.

Common link SCIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOlan says it's "retarded." But DCD has it! 20

Whoa! Visual Arts!!!! Neil seems confident but negs :( Very obscure, it goes dead.

INTERDISC!!!! Nolan would be doing very good on this packet (according to me). Too bad he's not in the final. :( A quick 20 on the bonus for Manual.

Neil powers some elemental chemistry. He's naming literary works...but very quickly as the clock runs down. A VERY quick 20.

COMMON LINK MUSIC Neil is rushing the bonus again...30!!

Manual 345, DCD 305. with a little over 3:14 left. 2 tossups left.
Whoa... is this a one-game final?

Re: Midwest Championship May 15, 2010 at Culver (IN)

Post by Dan-Don »

We're at a break here. This liveblog is brought by the winner of this tournament's neg prize, with well over 40 (I think). The story of my long, strange trip so far:

- Slept on the brown, tile floor of the quaint Culver Campus Motel.
- Lost to St. Joe's.

End of story. As Nolan says, no one cares. Game 2 commencing.

I've been informed that another tournament may be using this set at the same time so I'll be doing some editing.
