Help with Scobobot
Help with Scobobot
After having heard about the Scobobot for some time, I decided trying it as a way to practice during the break. A few days ago, I entered the IRC channel as "Monk" and...nothing. A few people were there but completely silent. There was no 'bot, and I left in boredom pretty soon.
Are there peak times or traditional dates for the Scobobot? Do people pre-organize games?

Re: Help with Scobobot
Traditionally, the bot seems to mainly be around at night. I can't really give you an exact time, but sometime after 7-8 PM EST sounds about right to me.
However, there are a few scobowl users who have portable bots who might be around at any given time.

Re: Help with Scobobot
There are other channels that have bots too. Try entering #arcadiaqb, which usually has a bot that's active.

The bot used to be on a server but there were problems with it a couple months ago and I've just been running it off of my laptop. I'll try to place it back on a server in a few days.
Meanwhile, there's a portable version of the bot which is described here.

Alejandro, you've still got space on my machine if you need it. I'll see what I can do to set it up as a service.Alejandro wrote:The bot used to be on a server but there were problems with it a couple months ago and I've just been running it off of my laptop. OK, so I've got a Mac, running Leopard with up-to-date JRE and Colloquy IRC client, but I can't get my bot to connect. It'll open, but when I press connect it just sits there. Any ideas?

No idea. My issue was with Java settings- after fiddling with 'em, mine worked.

Mac and Linux users need to edit the settings.txt files so that "sets\\" and "stats\\" read as "sets/" and "stats/", respectively. This should hopefully fix your problem.Kwang the Ninja wrote:OK, so I've got a Mac, running Leopard with up-to-date JRE and Colloquy IRC client, but I can't get my bot to connect. Re: Help with Scobobot
That did it. Thanks!
EDIT: I'm not going anywhere for the holidays, and I don't really ever shut down my laptop, so I'll leave a bot up in the #scobowl channel. I think it'll stay up when I'm not at my computer, but I can't make any guarantees. For some reason, it's in there as Guest39746868 or something.

You probably used a nickname that it is already registered. Choosing a different, unregistered nickname should prevent that from happening.Kwang the Ninja wrote:That did it. Thanks!

Re: Help with Scobobot
I imagine that Java has some way to automatically convert backslashes to the appropriate symbol for a String. This would probably make the portable bot easier to use.Alejandro wrote:Mac and Linux users need to edit the settings.txt files so that "sets\\" and "stats\\" read as "sets/" and "stats/", respectively. Re: Help with Scobobot
Hey I downloaded Xchat and MIRC and my free trials have run out and I am using Chatzilla but it frequently freezes and is a general pain in the butt. It has been like that on all of the programs. Is there anything I can do to make it work better?

Firefox seems to shut down the instant I try to go on the channel. Any idea what's going on?

You can set up IRC on it. Just add it as one of your accounts for IRC and then set it to the correct server. Then pick an username and you should be set.TheLessFamousEthan wrote:I used it but it just seems to be an instant messenger?Crazy Andy Watkins wrote:Use Pidgin for IRC.

I can get onto the channel through Mibbit. If Mibbit isn't working you might want to try using an external client like Pidgin.Dave Breger wrote:Firefox seems to shut down the instant I try to go on the channel. Any idea what's going on?

Re: Help with Scobobot
I tried adding a few formatted sets to the list of packets, but my bot won't play them (it recognizes them, but when I load the set the game can't start).
