Detroit Catholic Central Spring Invitational 3/13/10

Post by bherman »

DCC SPRING ACADEMIC TOURNAMENT

March 13, 2010

Detroit Catholic Central is sponsoring a quiz bowl tournament on the above date at its school in Novi, Michigan (from I-96 take Wixom Road Exit and go ½ mile south).

The questions are being provided by High School Academic Pyramid Questions (http://hsapq.com/index.html). We will be using HSAPQ Packet 9. HSAPQ questions are pyramid-style and typically four sentences in length. Sample questions can be found at the following link: http://hsapq.com/sample.html

The tournament will contain 20 point powers, no negs, and three-part bonuses (each worth 10 points each). We are planning on having a round robin style playoff with a winner’s bracket and a consolation bracket, so all teams will be guaranteed at least ten rounds of competition.

We might consider having a Junior Varsity Division and Championship contingent on interest. Junior Varsity is defined as 9-10 grade students with no previous varsity tournament experience. The same questions would be used for Varsity and JV divisions.

$65 cost per team

$10 discount for buzzer system (per buzzer system provided)

$10 travel discount for teams making a 150 mile round trip

For lunch there are four fast food restaurants within ½ mile of school.

(There will be no food provided in the morning)

Inquiries can be made to [email protected]. Or [email protected]

Bracketed round robin in the morning; rebracketed round robin in the afternoon. Since we are keeping registration open until Wednesday, March 10th, we don't have final numbers for each bracket yet. On Wednesday, March 10th we will be sending out an email to all coaches with the official schedule, but we plan to go from 8 AM until 4 PM.

Because of an unforeseen conflict with the question packet, we are changing the HSAPQ packet we are using from packet 9 to packet 11 which has been used at Northwestern for their Wildcat XII held on February, 13th. This shouldn't cause any conflicts for any of the teams who have already registered, but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

The field is now officially closed. Below is the official list of teams competing in the Detroit Catholic Central Spring Academic Tournament. Since we now have eight JV teams, we will have a separate JV division. JV teams will play an eight team round robin. The JV Division will play four games before Lunch and four after. Team with the best overall record will be named JV champion. Any ties will be played off in a one game match. JV teams will be playing the same question set as the varsity teams (HSAPQ Set 11).

There are 18 Varsity teams. We will be running 3 brackets of six teams each. Varsity teams will play each team in their brackets in the morning. During lunch we will rebracket for the afternoon with the top two teams from each bracket moving into the championship round robin division. There will also be two consolation brackets for teams that do not make it into the championship bracket.
Registration will be held between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. The first round will be scheduled for 8:30 AM. Tournament play should conclude around 4 PM.

The field is as follows:
Brighton: 1 Varsity, 2 JV
Detroit Catholic Central: 4 Varsity, 3 JV
Detroit Country Day: 1 Varsity
Dewitt: 2 Varsity
East Lansing: 1 Varsity
Greenhills: 1 Varsity
Huron High School: 1 Varsity
Independent: 1 Varsity
Kalamazoo Christian: 1 Varsity, 1 JV
Northmont: 1 Varsity
Okemos: 1 Varsity
Redford Thurston : 2 Varsity, 1 JV
Sand Creek: 1 Varsity, 1 JV
Tippecanoe: 1 Varsity
U of D: 1 Varsity, 1 JV
University Liggett: 1 Varsity
Utica Academy for International Studies: 1 Varsity

Looking Forward to seeing you

Thanks.

Usually, brackets for tournament are stated at the tournament itself. In other words, they don't reveal who anyone is playing until the day itself.

Out of curiosity, for this tournament, is it 20 points per power because of Pace-Like similarity (in that one answers it before FTP), or is it just 20 points, because it is a "round number"?

Hope for a good tournament. It should be fun.

The results were rather screwed up.

DCD got 1st overall. And I believe DCC B got 2nd, and DCC A got 3rd, but I am not sure.

The playoffs ended up being run weirdly as teams left, so I don't know how other teams were ranked. The scheduling was quite off, so there ended up being a different number of games for different teams, so the exact results will be posted later.

DCC A had some players leave early, so they played with 3; DCC B still had their whole team. Then, the questions that the B team answered would have been contested by those A team players who had left; the B team ended up getting a majority of questions that favored them, and so DCC B defeated DCC A in the playoffs.

Then, it was essentially a single-match final between DCC B and DCD, as both teams went undefeated in the Round Robin up till that point. Then DCD defeated DCC B to claim first, and DCC B claimed second. DCC A had the next best record beyond that, so DCC A was third.

Have stats for this been posted anywhere? I heard that some team pretended to be the Ohio NASAT team.

That was "Copley" High School.

Mr. Jones said he would post the stats, but I don't know where he would've posted if it isn't on the forums.

I think we have to wait for the stats to tell who got fourth. But it could've been Copley, DCC C, or Northmont. They might've been tied for fourth some two of them.

Copley must have gotten fourth because we beat DCC C and Northmont had to forfeit to us since they left and we beat them in the prelims
