February Poll

Post by jonah »

I'll tabulate this if no one else wants to, but anyone who wants to should feel very free to volunteer.

My ballot:
1. Auburn A
2. Stevenson
3. St. Ignatius
4. Loyola
5. Carbondale
6. OPRF
7. Lisle
8. WWS
9. Auburn B
10. Niles North

FYI, my ballot for the IHSSBCA Newsletter poll was as follows (separating classes and only considering A teams as required):
CLASS AA
1. Auburn A
2. Stevenson
3. St. Ignatius
4. Loyola
5. Carbondale
6. Oak Park-River Forest
7. Wheaton Warrenville South
8. Niles North
9. Naperville Central
10. Champaign Centennial

CLASS A
1. Lisle
2. Litchfield
3. Latin
4. PORTA
5. Macomb
6. Greenville
7. Winnebago
8. New Berlin
9. Peoria Christian
10. Byron

I'm only going to comment on Class A, so here we go:

1. Litchfield
2. Lisle
3. Latin
4. Warrensburg-Latham
5. PORTA
6. Fairfield
7. New Berlin
8. Carterville
9. Greenville
10. Peoria Christian

I know nothing of the schools that are on Jonah's ballot that are on mine. Sorry Jonah, as much as I like my team and I'm so proud of them for what they've done this year (32-22), there are many more than five teams that are better than we are in Class A at this point, and many who are on this list have already beaten us. With all due respect, I'd like to hear your logic as to why you placed us that high in your ballot.

Class A
1. Lisle
2. Latin
3. Litchfield
4. New Berlin
5. PORTA
6. Fairfield
7. Byron
8. Dwight
9. Williamsville
10. Warrensburg-Latham

Class AA

1. Auburn
2. Stevenson
3. St. Ignatius
4. Loyola
5. Carbondale
6. OPRF
7. IMSA
8. WWS
9. Fremd
10.Naperville Central

Litchfield is a very good team, but they would have to be ALOT better than last year to be better than Lisle. It would be hard to understand how good Lisle is for class A. Generally the state champion in Class A is only as good as a regional champion in Class AA. Lisle is as good a Class AA Sectional Champion (State qualifier). Lisle has done the work this year, they deserve to be ranked number one.

While people voting in the IHSSBCA newsletter poll are welcome to post their ballots from that, the ballot you post in this thread should be your vote for real quizbowl purposes: don't separate classes, you can include B teams, you can include the Hobo, etc.

Admittedly my knowledge of Class A is very poor outside of Lisle and Latin, and most of my Class A ballot was composed by guesswork. I ranked Greenville where I did even though I've never seen them play (nor, I think, any of their opponents) because practicing on good questions will get you far even on bad questions, and having a dedicated coach as I know you, Jay, are is similarly effective. I have high hopes for Greenville.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jonah. We'll do our best to make your prognostications look good. We have lots of work to do to get there, and we'll see how things look once the bear trap that is the Regional Round is finished.

Where's the love? We beat Niles North both times we played them with Server, we beat Fremd both times we played them (once with Server and Arjun and once with neither), and we beat Naperville Central when they were at full strength and we weren't. I know that we don't belong at the top of anybody's list, but news of our demise is greatly exaggerated.

When you haven't fielded your real team at either of the last two tournaments you played, it's hard to tell. When I see New Trier play a decent-looking match, I'll say so and vote accordingly.

4. Loyola
5. Carbondale
6. OPRF
7. Naperville Central
8. Hobo/Lisle
9. WWS

New Trier was also a near-miss for me too, for I haven't seen their full lineup since October. I also don't really have a good feel for Auburn B yet. My own ranking is colored by my own preference for, well, me, but I have posted big wins against teams like Lisle and Niles North.

Not wanting to offend anyone, particularly Jay, but here is my ballot as sent to IHSSBCA.

Class A
1-Litchfield
2-Chicago Latin
3-Byron
4-Lisle
5-Macomb
6-PORTA
7-Farmington
8-New Berlin
9-Mendon Unity
10-Warrensburg Latham

Class AA
1-Rockford Auburn
2-St. Ignatius
3-Carbondale
4- W. Loyola Academy
5- Chatham Glenwood
6-New Trier
7-Barrington
8- Champaign Centennial
9-Lincolshire Stevenson
10-Quincy

I can say that it is certainly filled with a lot of guessing based off of past performances and what I could gleen from the tournament results posted. i apologize to Lisle, it seems that those who know them ranked them higher and I won't dispute that. Litchfield is very good and the finals should be good match. I also ranked PORTA lower than most. We are good, but we still have work to go and not much time. While I haven't played Farmington, they did post some good scores and quality wins forthe seeding meeting.

Ballots received: Greenthal, Laird, Donohue, Fischer, Perovanovic, Garb, Riley, Glerum*, Bardoe, Winkler, Volgman. If you posted something in this thread but weren't just listed, it's probably because you posted separate ballots per class; give me one ballot combining Class A, Class AA, non-IHSA teams, and B (/C/...) teams as appropriate.

*Shut up.

i think in general we were in agreement on 4 of your top 5 picks. My review of the online results from the tournament page placed Stevenson lower, and perhaps in error. After 5 places it is nearly impossible for me to judge the fine nuances of other teams that I don't see or compete against without a full schedule and results sheet to judge quality wins. Having played Champaign, Chatham, and Quincy, I ranked them accordingly. Champaign is a very good team but Chatham I felt was better.

It's fine to post your IHSSBCA poll ballot here—I did it because I like mine to be public. However, the poll I am tabulating (which is not restricted to IHSSBCA members) is a different one, and doesn't have any of the restrictions of the IHSSBCA poll.

Heh, no one let the Stevenson kids see this ballot, m'kay?
While I wish we would've gotten more love at sectional seeding, I can't claim we're better than Stevenson... OTOH, OPRF and Niles North, teams named on other ballots, are strong teams, but Barrington defeated both this year. But we've also had a couple of inexplicable losses that should've never happened to a top ten team, plus we're not even considered the #2 team in our conference. Having said all that, Bruce Fitzgerald himself is concerned about Stevenson's ability to really get separation from the pack in a format involving computational math... I think he's concerned for nothing, though, as I've seen Zach hold his own on math.

The points can't be shared because the whole point of this poll is for people to make judgments, not equivocate to weasel their way out of doing so. If you want your ballot counted, choose.

Jeeze. Is it not enough to "judge" that those two sets of teams are equal in my mind? I want my poll-running powers back. Let's do Stevenson ahead of Ignatius and Hobo ahead of Lisle.

Mark apparently knows something in connection with the whereabouts of the last person who offended me...(JUST KIDDING!) No, Mark, no offense taken whatsoever. Pardon the reference to set logic, but my guess is that if you took the set of teams Winter has seen and the set of teams Grant has seen, the intersection of those sets is probably a pretty small number of teams. I love it that several posters are contributing teams from parts of the state that may not get as much play on the boards.

I hope that those of us who know more about the A schools aren't hesitant to speak up, because we have some AWESOME Class A programs throughout the state of Illinois that deserve some props.

Agreed. Also what's with the Fremd love too.

But guys, Bonny Jain made First-Team All-State as a freshman; any team he's captaining must be good. And Arjun's the best math player in the state.

The only time I've seen Fremd was at Fremd on bad questions, but I know they beat us pretty handily (although we were far from full strength). Arjun's very good, and although they are probably worse on pyramidal questions I think they would still be worth a top 10 rank.

I've seen Fremd play a handful of times. I must have moderated for them about a billion (seven or eight) times at Ultima. My verdict: they made some decent buzzes on history and science, and I think they had one girl who had deep but limited knowledge on a small portion of fine arts. That put them ahead of a lot of other teams that I saw but I certainly won't rank them anywhere near the Auburninators, Stevensons, and Niles Nor-I mean Loyolas of the world. In the IHSA State Series, they'll do good because the difficulty and scope of questions are limited and because they've got mad parlor trick skills. In all seriousness, this team could progress far in the IHSA series but wont touch the best teams in mACF because their philosophy, social science, and other notable "non-school" topics aren't quite up to snuff with the teams that study more. Once again, though, they've got enough weapons to beat "elite teams" if they catch a packet but won't consistently do so because they can't convert the full range of topics.

I was going to post an argument for "why Fremd isn't top 10 right now," but this pretty much covers what I've seen of them in my (limited) experience this year.

That said, I do have a point to add: At the NIU Prison Bowl Mirror, Fremd wasn't even in the top 10 of the 11 Illinois schools in the field.

They were missing Arjun though, who is their best player even if he's not that great in the grand scheme of things.

I'll take ballots for 72 more hours if anyone else wants to submit one. I know there are some people reading this who don't post, so they should feel free to email me their ballots.

Man, almost as many people voted in this poll that voted in the entire national poll last month. What the heck. No, that's not a lot of voters, i'm saying i wish more voted in the larger ones.

Vote on, Illinois.

It's just that fact that more Illinois people know about more Illinois schools. I don't think enough people know enough about the national scene to submit a qualified ballot in the national poll. I don't participate in either poll regardless.

Hey I would have voted as would a bunch of people from Illinois if we had actually seen multiple teams involved in the poll. Only teams in poll that I have seen are DCC and Auburn.

Edit: Way to Beat me to it Zahed.
