Texas Quiz Bowl Pre-Nationals Event (5/15)

Post by Romero »

On May 15, 2010 Texas Quiz Bowl will be hosting a Pre-Nationals Prep Event. This tournament will be held at Seven Lakes High School (9251 S. Fry Road) in Katy, Texas. The tournament will use 2010 NAQT SCT Div II questions. Matches will follow all NAQT rules (including timed halves). It is expected that each team will play between a minimum of 10 matches and a maximum of 16. This tournament is limited to 16 teams.

In order to play in this event, a team must be qualified for HSNCT. The entry fee for this tournament is $135 with $10 buzzer discount available. Your entry fee will include lunch and a lunchtime Name that Tune sideshow. Avoiding a lengthy lunch break will allow us to maximize the number of matches for each team. If sufficient interest exists, a post-tournament individual shootout will likely be available.

Current Field: LASA A, LASA B, Seven Lakes

Texas Quiz Bowl was the hosting coordinator of the 2002 and 2004 HSNCT tournaments. Houston is served by both Hobby and Bush Airports. Both airports are located approximately 30 miles from Katy and Hobby is a southwest hub. A hotel group rate will be available at a later time. With any luck, our lunch will be authentic Texas BBQ.

Registration for this event can be completed via email to romeroc at gmail dot com

I hope to see schools from many states attend this event,

LASA will of course be there in full force, and we would love to see all of the teams from the region make it if possible. This was a great tuneup for HSNCT for us last year, and we'd love to see an even stronger field this year.

St. Andrew's is interested in this tournament if our budget allows. We are hosting the Mississippi State competition in April and will know more in about 3 weeks. Is there a deadline to register?

Yes, we do have a budget. Did I ever give the impression that we didn't or just because we seem to get around? We just really have to choose which tournaments we attend, because the competition in MS hasn't really caught up to other areas of the country. We have been fortunate that our school gives us some money, but the flights are all paid for by the students and their families or through whatever fundraising we can do. If you (or anyone else) are interested in how we do it, email me sometime at johnsona at gosaints dot org and we can talk more.

Mr. Johnson -

You should email Chris Romero at the address provided in the tournament announcement for further information. I don't think he checks the boards regularly, so it's best to email him directly. We'd of course love to see you there. It should be a strong field of Texas teams (LASA's 3 teams, Seven Lakes, Temple, and hopefully, St. Marks and Cistercian), and we're hoping, by posting the announcement here, to attract some of the other HSNCT-qualified teams from the region.

Chris,

I just sent you an email about this, but Dorman will be in attendance with one team and one buzzer. Thanks, and we're looking forward to the tournament!

I'm sure full stats will be coming soon, but Dorman ran the table in Houston.

How close were the LASA/Dorman games? LASA beat them earlier this year on the Prison Bowl set.

The first was 400-260, the second was not as close (maybe 495-250?), the third was closer. I was reading other matches all day, so I don't have great info for the moment. Seven Lakes also was within range of Dorman on the final tossup in the day's 12th round; Dorman powered it and won by about 65.

The third game was 410-310 Dorman. Stats are here:

Thanks for the stats link Benji. Hopefully you guys have a good bit of data now on what can help out in these final days before the national tournaments start.

Having only seen stats thus far this year, the thing that impressed me most in my room Saturday was some of the powers Jiawei was getting to spot them an early lead on Dorman. I only saw LASA once, but I saw a lot of Dorman and Seven Lakes. That Dorman group that (as a B team) tied for 17th at last year's HSNCT and 21st at last year's NSC seems to be coming along smoothly.
