PROBING FOR INTEREST: Late Season Tourney @ Rockford Auburn

Post by Charley Pride »

I saw in another thread that there could be some potential interest if someone were to host a mirror of the Ben Cooper Memorial Tournament. Well, Auburn needs money, and Illinois needs good tournaments before nationals, so here I am, looking to see if we can get a solid field of teams.

A few things to consider:
~Entry fee would probably be somewhere between $50 and 60 (but don't hold me to that), and I anticipate we could offer discounts for working buzzer systems.
~The tournament will be run on what should be a high-quality set with an ideal difficulty level for nationals preparation.
~The tournament format will allow for matches against strong teams all day, as we hope to garner a field about as strong at that of ATROPHY.

What I need from you:
~Interest in participation
~Dates through May that would work best for you

Moderators who could work for free (or cheap) would be immensely appreciated, but we're not not going to offer stipends at this point.

As with ATRPHY, if we can work out the transportation issues then we will be happy to attend.

And I can then moderate (gratis) if needed.

Kristin and I could probably drop Jimmy off at Grandma's and walk on over. Not requiring an overnight is a big plus here, as is the likelihood that we'll be out of school. We won't know for sure until the week of, unfortunately. If Kristin can't, I probably can.

I'm thinking May 1 for this event, as May 22 is the date of Auburn's prom. I'll have 13 packets if this event happens, so a 12-team field would probably be the minimum for us to run this tournament. This way we can at least run a full round-robin with two packets for an advantaged final, should the need arise.

I know high school hosts have always been a little weary about seeing me playing rogue at their events, so I've limited myself to college-run tourneys. Since this is a little more informal and out-of-season, would I be able to play? If not, I can certainly come out with Loyola and staff for free.

Or, you know, take us since we probably won't have a bus.

Also, Zahed please do a better format (I.e. include negs if you're including powers and have a real acf advantaged final if needed) and letting Dan play this would be cool too.

Yeah, I do believe the set will have powers, and that would mean we include negs. If there aren't powers, I'm not yet sure whether or not I want negs.

And there we will definitely use an advantaged final.

I need more teams if I'm going to officially announce this event. May 1 will be the date.

EDIT: I want Dan-Don to play at this.

The set was written to be played in the 15/10/-5 format we used earlier today, and has powers with power marks included in each tossup. I certainly wouldn't mind if you chose not to use either powers or negs, though.

I had already decided that I would use whatever format you used, in order that we can compare stats across tournaments.

Consider me a possible staffer depending on what date it is. I'm pretty sure im not doing anything on the saturdays of early may (that I know of).

Transportation worked out; I should know whether we can do this or not by April 1 (is May 1 officially the date?).

Yeah, I'm fairly certain this isn't going to happen. We haven't received administrative response yet, and based when I asked an assistant principal about it today, we wouldn't have approval anyway. I'm really sorry. Even if it may still be possible, I'm officially saying that someone else can mirror this set in the area if they want to, since I'm done with it. Again, I apologize. I hope someone else picks it up.

I know it could be a real drive, but I am directing a mirror of the same tournament on May 22nd, the weekend before nationals starts, at the University of Missouri, and we have interest from some of Missouri's top teams, as well as out of state teams from Arkansas and Oklahoma, so Illinois teams are welcome to attend if they want one last chance to play something before nationals. That would be cool, of course, but a closer location would probably be better for Illinois teams. The Chicagoland teams are about 7 hours from Columbia, and the closest team likely to attend is Carbondale at 4+ hours away. I'm currently working on another possibility.

Yeah, it'd be really good if another school/location in Illinois were able to host this. Just shoot me an e-mail to let me know.

Champaign Centennial has agreed to host this tournament on May 8th as a mirror. We're looking for a 16-20 team tournament. More information is forthcoming, but staffing should be no big deal because of the proximity of UIUC. Jonah is helping a great deal with this, so either he or I will be posting an official thread in the next day or two.
