Announcement: TWAIN XI at UCLA, October 2, 2010

Post by Golran »

Hello all! This is a save the date announcement for TWAIN XI: {In search of a subtitle} for this upcoming October. We will almost certainly be using an NAQT set, and expect fees to be no higher than $80 base per team. I'm currently working with Kaplan to provide some sort of sponsorship type thing, which will further reduce fees, and likely provide some awesome, useful prizes. I will edit this post with more details as I get them, just wanted to get a save the date out there.

Also just to note, to avoid any disasters we will not be accepting teams until we are absolutely sure that we can staff them. As such, I plan to introduce the "self-sustainability discount" with this tournament, where the combination of 1 team + 1 buzzer + 1 moderator plays very near to at-cost.

If I don't go to Arcadia anymore, can I still get staffer discounts for Arcadia?

DATE: Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

PARKING: Parking is $10 at various lots throughout the UCLA campus.

VENUE: TBD on UCLA's campus

SCHEDULE:
8:00 A.M. – 8:30 A.M.: Registration Period (All teams must be accounted for by 8:30 A.M. PST)
8:30 A.M. – 9:00 A.M.: Rules Meeting / Moderator Meeting
9:00 A.M.: Tournament Play
Around 1:00 P.M.: Lunch
2:00 P.M.: Afternoon Play -> Playoffs

Lunch: Lunch is available on-campus. Hours of Operation vary for each dining option, but Ackerman Union is definitely open during the weekend.

ELIGIBILITY: All high school teams are eligible.

FORMAT: Twenty tossup-bonus cycles, with negs and powers from IS-96. Computational math may be included if a majority of teams desire it.

PRICING STRUCTURE:
Team Discounts
Base fee = $80 per team
-$5 for a fully-functional buzzer system (Must have four working buzzers on both sides)
School-wide Discounts
-$20 New School Discount (must not have played in any pyramidal tournament as a school since September 1, 2008)
-$10 for a moderator or staff member (The TD has the right to accept or reject the moderator and also reserves the right to withdraw the discount retroactive to payment.)
+$10 for a paper copy of the questions
***NEW SELF SUFFICIENCY DISCOUNT***
Provide 1 team, 1 moderator and 1 buzzer, $50 and includes 1 copy of questions for the school.
Minimum fee: $50 per team

The field will be capped at 16 teams unless there is excessive demand complimented by excessive resources. We hope that many teams will take advantage of the self sufficiency discount so we can use both a score-keeper and a moderator in most rooms, and have a dedicated stats-person. In order to ensure a smooth tournament I will not expand the field until we have enough staff known.

WARNING! If you cannot have payment by tournament date, please contact the TD with at least 24 hours notice. If you arrive without warning of delinquent payment to tournament, we will assess a $50 penalty to be paid immediately in addition to the regular payment, which must be received by us within ten business days.

Checks should be made out to "College Bowl Club of UCLA". Please do NOT change this wording. For reasons of financial security, if possible, please bring the check to the tournament rather than mailing it in advance.

REGISTRATION:
The TD for this tournament is Ian Drayer. The current registration deadline is Monday September 27th at 5 PM.

If you are planning to come, please e-mail Golran@ucla(dot)edu with:
1) Your school's name
2) Coach (or adult representative) name and e-mail address
3) The number of teams you are bringing
4) The number of buzzer systems and any other discounts you wish to validate

If you have any questions, please e-mail us.

We will keep you updated with more news as the tournament date approaches.
We hope to see you TWAIN on Sat., October 2nd, 2010

Thank You!

Ian Drayer
Tournament Director - TWAIN XI

Note: Please use TWAIN in the subject line of any e-mails so my auto-filter picks them up and puts all TWAIN e-mails in the same folder so I have easy access to organization.

Lucas, please send me an e-mail so I can get the registration with all the others. In other news, this post will serve as a field update section:

Confirmed:
2-Torrey Pines
1-Bishop's School in La Jolla
2-Edison HS
2-Palisades HS
2-Rancho Bernardo HS
2-North Hollywood HS
2-La Jolla HS
1-University HS
1-Diamond Bar HS
1-Irvine HS
1-Santa Monica HS

Total-17

Interest:
Arcadia

Also, we have confirmed 9 rooms in Rolfe Hall and enough staff to be able to expand the field to 24. We're just waiting on room confirmation before expansion (Doing a 3X7 morning RR and a 6-6-3-3-3 afternoon allows for 21 teams in 9 rooms)

This tournament happened. Stats are available at:

http://quizbowl.gimranov.com/stats/stat ... =TWAIN2010

Many thanks to the teams that made it out to the tournament and we hope to see you again soon! Thanks also to the moderators that came out and helped make this tournament such a great success! We hope to host another tournament soon and see you all again (we recently put in a bid for NAQT states, and we'll probably host something early January like we have the past couple of years).
