ACF Nationals 2021: Updates

Post by kearnm7 »

ACF Nationals 2021 remains planned for the weekend of August 7-8, 2021, but ACF is still working on confirming a site and field size. ACF hopes to host the tournament at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign but is waiting for approval from their Student Org. Development & Administration unit. Approval would not come until the state of Illinois fully reopens by entering Phase 5, which is expected to occur on June 11. With this approval pending, ACF has, in the interest of caution, secured Northwestern University as a potential backup host site and is working towards provisionally confirming rooms there. ACF hopes for a field of ca. 24 teams if the tournament is held at UIUC and expects a maximum of 14 teams if the tournament is held at Northwestern.

ACF hopes to announce a site and field size as soon as possible but asks for your patience throughout this process. ACF would like to thank the UIUC and Northwestern teams for working with us and ask that teams not book travel to or lodging in Champaign or Evanston until rooms are confirmed.

This will henceforth serve as the thread for updates on the tournament.

With Illinois now in Phase 5, is there any update about what this means for the ACF Nats site?

Because UIUC’s event registration has not reopened, the presumptive site for 2021 ACF Nationals is now Northwestern University. On Monday, ACF heard from Northwestern that booking rooms should be possible, but these rooms are not yet confirmed. ACF’s current understanding is that space at Northwestern is limited to 8 rooms; as a result, ACF has extended provisional invitations to the top 18 teams by Qualifier PPB (see here) to attend at Northwestern. ACF still asks that teams not book non-refundable travel to or lodging in Evanston until rooms are confirmed. It is ACF’s hope that this confirmation will arrive from the university soon. Thank you for your patience as we navigate the return to in-person quizbowl.

ACF has received confirmation of rooms from Northwestern University. Based on the number of rooms, ACF is setting a field cap of 22 teams. Tomorrow, ACF will extend formal invitations to teams and begin the registration process, but teams that are in the top 22 by Qualifier PPB can begin to book travel and lodging.

There is a possibility of a field expansion if more rooms come available: if this occurs, the field cap will be 24 teams.
