20th Century U.S. Political History Packet

Post by Cheynem »

So here's the deal (maybe this is the wrong section, not sure):

Over the summer, when I've had some free time, I've been rereading some of my favorite political history books (which are all about 20th century U.S. political history, the best kind). I've written a number of tossups (haven't counted them yet, but at least 20) on some stuff I really like or find funny but would never submit to a real tournament. These are lengthy 10-line beasts with no distribution (some administrations/people get mentioned a lot and some don't at all) and some are insanely hard. Since they're all about a specific niche, I couldn't even submit them as the American history of like a Gaddis type tournament, so I've compiled them into a packet and if people wish to play it at some event (VCU Open, Sun 'N Fun [although I won't be at any site], or whatever), they're welcome to it.

Well I won't be at any open tournaments, but I'd absolutely love to play this at any regular season events. It just so happens that American Political History is my favorite kind of history (I have an obsession about Presidents) and the 20th Century is my favorite era.

If someone at DCC or U of M could make this happen at their VCU Open mirror, I would be very interested in playing it.

I won't be at any more summer tournaments, but I look forward to going 0/4/6 on this when I coerce my club into reading it at practice.

After actually counting the questions, it's about two packets worth. A few questions are more cultural and legal history.

Since Eric has expressed interest in hearing these and may be able to come to Orlando for SnF on 8/21, and I'd also be interested, I'm sure we can work out a casual reading of these questions, along with Dallin Kelson's lit questions, Friday night at whatever hotel they're all at. Thanks for the offer, Mike!

Just to clarify--I don't care what tournament runs it and I don't want to be paid. I will need people to post here or e-mail me to specifically ask for it so I know whom to send it to.

For this weekend, I'm sending it to the San Diego, Richmond, and Michigan sites (well, I'm bringing it myself to the latter). If anyone does not plan on playing it at VCU Open or Sun N Fun, I can also read it in the IRC at some point.

Mike Cheyne's selfless act of courage inspired me to write my own packet on this subject. There are twenty questions that are about 5-6 lines a piece. Some of the tossups are very challenging and some will be familiar to all. If people want to run it with Mike's questions that would make sense but I don't care when it is read or where. It's also free. Let me know if you want the questions by emailing me at [email protected].

I'll also bring this with me to the Michigan site. I think this would be a good mini shootout event that probably can be run immediately before lit (?)

We read these at VCU on Saturday. I thought Mike's were a lot of fun, even if some were absurdly hard. I wouldn't mind hearing feedback on mine from people who heard them. Also just a reminder to email if you want a copy of mine.

I thought these packets were enjoyable. Thanks for writing them, Mike and David. It was a good mix of important, silly, and extremely hard stuff. If anything, I think these packets highlighted an potentially rich area of U.S. history answer lines: late 20th century political history. Events and political leaders from the last 40 years or so are badly underused as answer lines in quizbowl.
