Man, if I'd known grad students were allowed to play, I would've come to this tournament.

Grad students have been playing eft for a while now, I believe.

Quick results: Minnesota A (Hart/Hart/Heinonen/Johnson) beat Minnesota B (Carson/Cheyne/Spencer/Kandlikar the younger) 355-350 in the first game of a final in which they had the advantage.

We did run the Julius Civilis Classics Tournament as a side event. I believe I will have these stats posted sometime in the next 24 hours.

Chicago is missing its Judge. Please let me or Chicago know if you took their buzzer by accident. I also have a power cord for a buzzer system lying around somewhere. Let me know if this is the power cord to your buzzer system.

It's one of those things where the UIUC mirror of EFT pretended to be MCMNT, but then failed at enforcing it, especially by not following up on it.

Also, this tournament was overall pretty well run. Congrats to UIUC. This was our first time down there in the last few years, and I can say pretty confidently that we'll be coming back for more tournaments at UIUC. It was really cool to have every active Big Ten school at this tournament (well, if you don't count Penn State and Iowa, but that's pretty debatable). Bryan, I have your Vitamin Water, I will post ransom for it later. Nick if you are still watching the game on TiVo, sorry.

Yeah, this tournament could have specified grad student eligibility much better. I didn't think about playing because I had played the last two EFTs as a grad student, then noticed the thread claimed it was undergraduate only, so I e-mailed Charles Martin and got his okay.

This tournament was well run and enjoyable.

Since this was EFT, I wasn't going to enforce the MCMNT rules (check here for what these rules were). If I wanted to pretend this mirror was MCMNT, I would have specified these rules in the final version of my original post.
Papa's in the House wrote: Who can play this tournament?
Since we have merged this set with Brown's EFT, you can play this tournament if you an undergraduate student. High school teams can play this tournament. You should contact me if you have any questions about your eligibility or if you want to play on a mixed team.
I didn't think this was that hard to understand. It specified who could play for sure (undergraduates and high schoolers) and gave a way for all other persons interested in playing this tournament to see if they could play this tournament (by contacting me). I didn't want to specify hard and fast rules for graduate student eligibility since I didn't have hard and fast rules myself. I would rather try to take all aspects of a player into consideration rather than automatically disqualify them from playing because they were a 3rd year PhD student or something similar.

I want to thank all of the moderators that showed up to make this tournament possible. Several last minute additions allowed us to expand this tournament to 32 teams and saved us from having to delay this tournament due to moderators that didn't show up or were late. Thanks go to Donald Taylor and Matt Laird for doing stats and reading, and Trygve Meade, Mike Laudermith, David Riley, Gordon Arsenoff, Margot from UChicago, Kristen Strey, and Kelly Fisher for taking a day out of their lives to come read for us. Thanks also to the UIUC staffers that showed up and helped make this tournament run efficiently. I hope all of the players enjoyed this tournament and maybe one of the forum mods can create a hidden discussion forum for this tournament so people can discuss any problems with questions.

So people don't have to go back to my earlier post, prelim stats are here.

I had to leave before finishing the stats, so I was unable to get the Harding/WUSTL C game entered. If someone can email me the necessary numbers from that game, I'll get the playoff and combined stats posted in short order.

Also, for this being his second time as TD, Charles deserves a good amount of praise for the way this tournament was run. There were a couple issues with readers in the morning, but given the size of the tournament, in my view, it went pretty well.

Charles, take this as a learning experience, but when you only specify that undergraduates and high schoolers can play, saying "You should contact me if you have any questions about your eligibility," that is not remotely clear enough to grad student that they are welcome to attend and should email you. If your rules were that there is nothing hard and fast and that some graduate students would be allowed to play, you should have simply posted that instead.

I don't have any problems with grad students playing EFT, but just out of curiosity, what aspects of a player were you considering? What would have rendered someone ineligible to play?

The short answer to this question is that someone like Mike Sorice would be ineligible to play this tournament. The long answer involves a combination of the amount of time the grad student has been playing quiz bowl, the strength of the grad student at previous tournaments of similar difficulty, the amount of notice I received about the grad student's intention on playing EFT, the overall strength of this field, and other miscellaneous factors.

The results for the Julius Civilis side event can be found here. We played the last two rounds as a shootout between the remaining players. The results are below:

Mike: 4/5/3 = 85
Ike: 1/8/1 = 90
Kevin: 2/3/3 = 45
Charles: 1/0/1 = 10
Matt: 0/0/0 = 0

I don't know if stats stopped being taken.

EDIT: Let me know if you can't open the stats; I know it has been a problem in the past.

Hey, I didn't know you guys were planning to limit the field to undergrads. I came to EFT because it's the only thing resembling a regular-difficulty event that I can travel to this semester. Apologies if it rubbed anyone the wrong way.

I'm not irked at you at all, Andrew. I'm a little irked at myself for not pursuing my questions about my eligibility further. I saw that the UIUC site of EFT was being merged with MCMNT and assumed, perhaps fallaciously, that UIUC was intentionally limiting their field to novices when the rest of the country was doing no such thing, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense in retrospect. However, when statements like "Novice Tournament" and "you can play this tournament if you are an undergraduate student" are thrown out there in the announcement post, I think my being misled is not entirely my own fault. Still, I should have looked into it further.

I will enter the game, and fix the errors sent to me tonight as best I can. I will post the link tomorrow, probably before noon.

Upon second look, two games are still missing:

R7: Drake A vs. Michigan State A
R10: Chicago C vs. WKU

If you have detailed stats from them, send them to me.

i know. I didn't count Indiana, because they basically haven't been heard of as a team since the Hoosier open was canceled (that I know of at least), which was a year and a half ago. I feel like Penn State went to something last year.

Purdue wasn't there either.

Also, I suck and need to get better and buzz in more. The fact that there were powers surprised me a bit too, since I could have powered the first tossup I played and I didn't since I thought everything was worth only 10 points.

I can name my Big Ten schools don't worry. If Purdue has had a team, then they have never been mentioned on the forums, even in passing. No Nebraska either while we're at it.

This is still the case. When I went after the tournament to look for our Judge, it wasn't there. Most likely another team picked it up, thinking it belonged to them. It does say "Chicago" on it, so I would appreciate it if anyone took home an extra Judge to check for that, and if you have it, email me.

Offhand, I know UW-Madison and Minnesota also brought Judges. I will check the buzzer file after dinner, and see if anyone else brought it.

To all parties involved, blame me for the buzzer mix-up. My records were off from the beginning, and I neglected to fix them once I realized they were off.

I think you mentioned having a power cord from one of the sets left there Charles, and I think that we left a power cord there. So if you do in fact have one, we would love to get it back sometime (like Earlybird).

Well fuck me, I can't find the buzzer file I set up.

I do recall multiple Judges. If my clearly faulty memory serves, Lawrence had the other Judge.

WUSTL is also missing a power cord. When I see it next, I will try to take a picture of it and send the picture to your email accounts.

That's right - but our handle-less Judge is next to me right now, so we took the right one home with us.
