The University of Michigan will be hosting a mirror of the ACF-sponsored Collegiate Novice Tournament on September 25th, 2010 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It will be held at Mason Hall. Teams will get no fewer than seven games and there will be some sort of finals to determine the winner of the tournament.

The base fee per team will be $15/player ($60/team of 4)
The following discounts will be offered:
- For bringing a working buzzer set - $2.5/player or $10 total knocked off your base fee
- For traveling over 100 miles as determined by Google maps - $2.5/player or $10 total knocked off your base fee.
- The minimum fee is $5/player.

Eligibility rules:
1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.
2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.
3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:
i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits).
ii. If you were ever on a playoff team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.
iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.
5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

If you would like to register or have any questions, send an email to [email protected] with the number of buzzer sets and teams you'll be bringing.

85% chance we send 1 team. 1% chance we send 2. 14% chance we don't send a team.

Is there any chance that if I could get out early if I came to staff? I'll be coming with MSU, but there's someone I want to spend some time with while I'm in Ann Arbor. I'd probably be free for at least the morning rounds.

We plan to start at 10 am.

We also plan on finalizing the field by Wednesday, September 22nd at 7pm. So, if you're interested, please send in a registration and confirmed number of teams before then.

I just found out that I'll be able to bring a scorekeeper as well. She's not done quiz bowl before, but I can vouch that she can write names and add multiples of ten and subtract multiples of five.

We have our first practice on Wednesday (the first day of our autumn quarter classes). At the student involvement fair today, we acquired the contact information of over a hundred students, some fraction of which will show up in a couple days and some small percentage of which will be interested in playing your tournament. Could you at least give us until 9 pm that day to figure out how many teams we will send? It will be no more than three.

That should be fine. Just make sure it isn't too late.

Isn't "someone" providing their own form of transportation?

Note to self: in the future, create parody thread where I talk about meeting SOMEBODY in Michigan, and at the end have it turn out to be Ryan Westbrook.

After contacting our other members, it looks like it's going to be just me for the Case Western team. I'm fine with playing solo, but if the organizers want to add me to another team for easier logistics, that would also work.

Scratch this - looks like we won't be coming. It's turned out that transportation will be more convenient for us for the Maryland mirror

I have posted a final field update.

The tournament format is looking to be round robins in prelim brackets of 6 teams, followed by a rebracketing into brackets of 4 and a round robin in there. Finals will be played as necessary.

Teams should try to arrive no later than around 9:45 as rounds will begin at 10 AM at the 3rd Floor of Mason Hall, which is located at 435 S State St Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109.

Since it is a home football game, there will be significant amounts of traffic. So, try to arrive early to avoid the traffic. There are parking structures on campus located at the following locations:
324 Maynard St, Ann Arbor, MI (between East Liberty and William
650 South Forest Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI (on Forest, south of South University Ave)

Any questions please email us at [email protected] or call Bryan Berend at (two four eight) three one zero zero six three four.

Congratulations to MSU consisting of Kurt, Shan, Jason, Mike, and Monika for winning the tournament by winning two games in a row in a disadvantaged final vs. Michigan D.

Final playoff stats are here: http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings (I realize that a game between Wooster B and OSU has gone missing. I will try to locate and find the score sheet for that)

I hope everyone had fun at this tournament.
