MN Open Music Listening: Katzenklavier or Panharmonicon?

This is a tentative announcement for a music listening quiz to be played at MN Open.

My format will consist of a written round of forty non-pyramidal identification questions. The top players at that round (probably around four of them, depending on how many people play; I will try to fashion a cutoff that allows all "deserving" players to continue playing) will play in a buzzer-based individual shootout on twenty pyramidal questions. Numbers of questions are subject to minor changes. A second room will be set up to allow the non-qualifying players to hear the pyramidal round.

Scores will be based on pyramidal round alone; the ID round is simply for breaking out the top players.

The initial round will allow players to write three things: Composition, composer, and year of composition (within twenty-five either way will count). Those factors will be worth 10, 5, and 2 points, respectively. Points are not cumulative on a particular question: you either get 10, 5, 2, or 0 on any given question. In other words, if you write the name of the composition and get it right, you'll get 10 points, not 17 points. There is no penalty for guessing, so unless you're absolutely sure, you should write in something for all three fields. For example, if you get the composition wrong but the composer right, you'll get 5 points. If you get both composition and composer wrong, but get the year within twenty-five, you'll get 2 points.

The pyramidal round will consist entirely of tossups on works or composers, and all questions will identify the type of answer required.

Logistical details: I expect the tournament to last between an hour and two hours. The cost will be $10 per person. Exciting music-related prizes will be provided, possibly for all competitors if I have enough time to procure them.

Update: Tournament done! Seeding round is 45, tossup round is 20 plus a TB. Tournament entry fee will be $15 (cost includes Jimmy John's delivered for lunch). Registration will take place tomorrow before MO proper begins (so have your cash and sandwich orders ready!).

Thanks for writing (is that really the right verb? maybe, creating?) this. I'm sad that we had only enough time at the Maryland site to play the qualifying round. Any chance I could get a copy, and that we could run the tossup-style round at the Yale mirror of THUNDER? The top four scorers at the Maryland site were all from Yale or Columbia, and hopefully would all be at THUNDER. And maybe Aaron Rosenberg might be part of the Brown teams that are coming...
